Lansoprazole experiences

Hello! I’m just wondering how good people have found lansoprazole for acid reflux? My GP recently switched me from omeprazole after I saw her about a persistent tickly throat. The throat symptoms have not improved after 2 weeks of lansoprazole and additionally I’ve had 3 attacks of heartburn which I have very rarely suffered with before. I’ve also been having back and chest discomfort which comes and goes, this could be anxiety because I’ve got myself utterly convinced that I have cancer of the esophagus.

@maeve84 you can get Famotidine. My GP said it isn't the first choice but works well for lots of people.
But taper onto it, I stopped the ppi one day and started the H2 receptor the next. So it left me in a bad way!

maeve84 · 22/01/2026 16:20

It’s just so nice ti talk to people who get it! My husband doesn’t understand, so while he’s sympathetic he’s also offering me snacks at 9pm!

Every night at 9pm my husband eats chocolate and offers it to me 🤷‍♀️

@sequinpanties🙈 oh well, at least he’s trying to be nice!

I’ve been so much better today than yesterday but suddenly tonight after dinner I got terrible heartburn again. It’s almost like the lansoprazole wears off by dinner time

Take gaviscon after dinner and every meal.

WoooMumma · 22/01/2026 21:35

Omeprazole and lansoprazole don't work for me, but esomeprazole works well.

TheAdversary · 22/01/2026 21:39

It can take a few weeks to settle down - for your body to get used to it - for example when a dose changes.

I was on 15mg a day for 6 years as a stomache protector due to needing aspirin daily. Then I got heartburn so they upped my Lansoprazole to 30mg. I still had heartburn off and on for 3 weeks but then it went away (unless I had a lot of spicy food on an evening). Coffee doesn’t iritate me at all - I drink it all evening.

I would bear with it and have a glass of milk and maybe magnesium or a rennie/gaviscon before bed.

maeve84 · 22/01/2026 21:45

Is gaviscon better than rennie? I’ve had 2 Rennies since finishing dinner and they haven’t really helped.

my experience was for the first 10 days I didn’t notice an improvement in the tickly throat of chest tightness, and then suddenly days 11-13 I’ve had really terrible heartburn on top of those other symptoms. Is it normal for extra symptoms to appear in the settling down phase? It hurts my chest so much when I swallow too.

@WoooMummathats interesting as most other people seem to have done well on lansoprazole

OP posts:
sequinpanties · 22/01/2026 23:43

I was advised to take Lanzoprazole in the morning 🤷‍♀️ which I did after years of taking it at bedtime. If Gaviscon doesn't work for you try Bisoprolol. It's the best thing I've had to tackle it.

maeve84 · 23/01/2026 06:49

So I’ve woken up this morning with terrible heartburn in my chest and back. I’ve not eaten in over 12 hours and it didn’t wake me all night, but as soon as i woke up it was there. I’ve NEVER had this before. Is there any way the lansoprazole is causing it? 2 weeks ago all I had was some chest/back tightness and a tickle in my throat. Now I’m in so much pain the thought of getting up and getting everyone ready is just too much

OP posts:
Moveyourbleedingarse · 23/01/2026 07:56

Just stop taking it. Don't take one today. One every other day for a few weeks then every three days etc.

It isn't worth it to feel crap! That's why I stopped mine.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 23/01/2026 07:57

Oh and rennies make mine worse. Gaviscon aniseed liquid by far the best for me.

Do you mean Bisodol? Bisoprolol is a beta blocker and can cause reflux.

I find Gaviscon double strength far better than Rennies, I only eat meat at most 3 times a week and not very much, particularly red meat is bad, tomato based dishes are a no no, as well as garlic, chilli and curry, although I am ok with chicken tikka/tandori. No fizzy drinks, occasional wine, I do still have tea, but no later than 3pm. No cakes or biscuits, but flapjacks seem ok. I take Gaviscon every night, or else I will wake up coughing, which can lead to reflux and heaviness in chest. I am trying slippery elm at the moment which has shown some improvement.

Boredofmyguts · 23/01/2026 09:38

I’ve tried most of the PPIs - omeprazole seems to work for a bit and then taper off. Lanzoprazole works at a high dose and esomeprozole didn’t do much. GP has now prescribed pantoprazole. I’m not keen on PPI but I have gastritis so the GI said I needed to be on PPI. I don’t like taking them though.
My reflux is worse at night. I always wake w a sore throat and chest discomfort. I sleep on a wedge/don’t eat 3-4 hours pre-bed, eat a low-acid diet (acid watcher) as best I can and having gaviscon advance every night.
My DS has just started lanzoprazole - hrs had an endoscopy which was clear but he coughs like a bastard after eating and gets heartburn.
My GP won’t prescribe famotidine which is an H2 blocker but you could try .

Greenfingers37 · 23/01/2026 10:03

I was prescribed lanzoprazole for acid reflux and it made it worse. It turned out that it was a symptom of coeliac disease-the endoscopy confirmed it.

Do you have a gall bladder? It could be gall stones. Even if you don't have one you can still have stones. Not trying to panic you but have been through all of this. I used to physically manipulate painful areas like this between the chest to make me burp. If it's too painful see a doc.

I thought gall bladder. I had sludge in my gallbladder. An ultrasound would rule it out. It's back to the GP.

maeve84 · 23/01/2026 15:08

I’ll have to brave the gaviscon. Got an appointment at 4.30 so I’m going to ask about stopping them. It’s the only thing that can have caused such a dramatic worsening. Nothing else has changed!

@Boredofmygutsthe thing is, until the last few weeks (and for the heart burn the last few days) I could eat dinner at 8.30pm and go to bed at 9.30pm with no problems… so it really seems like the ppis are causing my issues!

@Greenfingers37thats very interesting but i had a coeliac test as part of some other investigations so I dont think mine can be that.

I do have a gallbladder… but was under the impression that i would have pain in my stomach with gallstones?

"gallstone pain, or biliary colic, is typically a sudden, severe cramp in the upper right or center of the abdomen, often after fatty meals, radiating to your back or shoulder, and lasting minutes to hours, sometimes with nausea or vomiting"

With me it was middle of bra front.
