Handhold if anyone’s around? Scan yesterday at 5pm, GP called this morning

Wondering if anyone has any experience/insights?
Late 40s, on HRT. Cycle usually still rock solid, horrendously heavy, except for last few (2-3) months - spotting, random bleeds, periods when not due. Bit of pelvic discomfort.
Went to GP, but kind of hoped assumed it was the beginning of the end of periods and just the timing going haywire/and to find out how I should be taking progesterone as had previously been on that Day 15-28 and cycle being out of whack meant that that regime was going to be hard to do. GP said she could feel something on the left hand side. Recent CA125 was fine, recent smear was clear ‘but cervix is very red’. My cervix has always defied medical science (that’s another story) so wasn’t unduly worried. They upped progesterone to 200mg daily, put me on the 2 week wait for internal/external US. It’s been 5 weeks 😬but I had the US last night after 5 o’clock. Sonographer was rummaging around for ages (over 30 mins) and made a point of saying the GP will be in touch, but if they aren’t, you must contact them. I know they usually can’t/don’t say much. Told myself that it was good that the tests have been done and that I’d hear in due course, not to worry in the meantime. Then this morning I have had 3 calls from the GP before 10am, which I missed as was in a work meeting with phone off. I called them back and they asked me to come in at noon. So now of course I am absolutely shitting myself, and have self-diagnosed with every gynae cancer going.
Don’t know what I’m asking for really, other than a handhold, and if anyone has had similar happen and it turned out to be something that wasn’t nefarious. I feel lucky that at least I find out what’s going on this morning but the speed at which they’ve followed up is terrifying me 😧Speculation of course, but I can’t help but feel that if this was, I dunno, fibroids, there wouldn’t be this level of urgency this morning

Thank feck! And bloody good you were able to go private CONGAAAAAAA.

WearyAuldWumman · 17/12/2025 23:34

I'm disgusted that the NHS won't do the hysterectomy for you. The Mirena seems to be what they offer as a matter of course. I was given one for hyperplasia, as was my SIL.

SIL asked for a hysterectomy: "I'm in my 70s. I don't need the blooming thing!"

They refused. The line, apparently, is that any operation carries a risk, so they'd rather insert a Mirena coil and do a biopsy every 6 months. (I believe that the protocol is for 3 biopsies.)

SIL's symptoms returned. The hyperplasia and turned into cancer and she was given a hysterectomy. Happily, it was contained and she's been fine - had her hysterectomy 4 yrs ago.

@GiveOverWillYou That is fabulous news! Have been quietly lurking, watching your updates & praying on your behalf ❤️ When it comes to rest & recuperation, last year I had major abdo surgery (removal of all of large bowel, Barbie Butt surgery and removal of an ovary - wished they’d taken both, but hey ho!) & I was driving again at 8 weeks, doing other bits & pieces that used abdo muscles as & when. That was op number 40+ so lots of experience! Take it easy & take it steady. DH sounds like a good egg! Have a fab Christmas! ❤️

ChessorBuckaroo · 17/12/2025 23:36

You have us stitches too with your comments about your DH!

Well this thread was a roller-coaster! OP I’m so pleased you got such a positive result and such a quick fix. I know it means major surgery but still; this is fixable, this is able to be handled and not life threatening. I’m so pleased for you!

SecretNameAsImShy · 18/12/2025 00:24

Fantastic news. As one on the other side of menopause, I look forward to you joining us in January.

Take heed of the Docs and rest up completely. This is major abdominal surgery and you won’t believe how much it will wipe you out. Take all the time given to recover.

Wonkywalker · 18/12/2025 00:28

Brilliant news! It must feel like you have won the lottery and had the best Christmas present!

When the NHS finally got round to removing the Fucker it was a bit of a revelation to find that I could not even lift a kettle for weeks - like you I had planned world domination a week post surgery but it took longer than anticipated.

The main thing is that it is getting done in January and you will be fully fit by the summer - the trick is not to rush back to work.

ProudWomanXX · 18/12/2025 00:28

GiveOverWillYou · 17/12/2025 22:59

Thank you all for the handholds, prayers, rooting and good wishes today ❤️❤️❤️

It was good news!!!

🎉🥳🎉🎉🎉🎊🎉👯👯🎉🎉👯🎊

This Bastard Thing (name now official) is a fat, revolting, degenerating fibroid, that is now the size of a canteloupe and rotting in the middle 🤮🤮🤮🤮 and has involved the ovary (which has 2 cysts on it for good measure) and is fucking with my bladder for fun as well. Womb is enlarged (16cm) and there are three other (smaller) fibroids, and another one that is subserosal.

They’re saying it’s too big for keyhole, so it’ll be a full hysterectomy and ovaries and tubes out in January. Instant surgical menopause, NO MORE FUCKING PERIODS!!!!!

Hallelujah!!!

I am so bloody relieved! 🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊

On the way to the appointment I had an unexpected call from the NHS consultant. Her approach was: biopsy (of lining) clear, let’s stick in a Mirena (no explanation), let’s ‘shave’ the subserosal fibroid under local, that ‘should’ help with the monthly haemorrhaging, but might not.

If you’re still having problems ‘after a couple of years’, don’t worry - it shouldn’t last long, cos menopause will happen at some point anyway.

TBT? We’ll just leave that in there 😳😳😳

Honestly, I am not generally one for bashing the NHS but FFS. Couldn’t/wouldn’t discuss any other options at this stage.

DH delighted (but now cowering at the financial implications of my new lease of life -bucket list planning incoming) It’s going to be hard on him - we were told recovery must be taken seriously. I was a bit blase - yeah, yeah - no driving for a month, right? Er, no says the Dr - no being even a passenger for 6 weeks, you can leave the house accompanied after 4 weeks for short walks. .

This sounds a bit extreme to me? I mean, I won’t be weightlifting and building furniture but I’d hope to be able to shuffle around properly after a week or so and be basically functional after 2 at least, surely?! We’ll see. I won’t be silly.

So now DH is concerned that I will be like he old lady from ‘Ello ‘Ello with an ear trumpet and a stick, bashing on walls for attention. No chance - I’m going to treat myself to a bullhorn for Christmas, with which to issue instructions/summon minions

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for all the love and well wishes ❤️❤️❤️ I fucking love Mumsnet ❤️ ‘Nest of vipers’ , ‘Prosecco Stormfront’ indeed 🙄

You people are the best of the best in the world ❤️

Join me in a celebratory Mumsnet Christmas Conga!

So glad it's not cancer!

But, my friend had what you are going to have, for similar reasons.

Your Consultant is correct with the estimated time frame for recovery, although in my friend's experience it was a bit optimistic, tbh ( nothing went wrong for her, it's just a huge surgery!)

Sorry, but thought you ought to know,so you can make plans for help while you recover.

babbi · 18/12/2025 00:30

Such wonderful news!!!
You deserve the ear trumpet and you get a new body too.
What a Christmas present ❤️❤️❤️

MayaPinion · 18/12/2025 01:54

Great news, OP. I had almost exactly what you have (including the cantaloupe description and the ovarian cysts) and had a subtotal hysterectomy via the NHS about 3 years ago (it’s bizarre they won’t do yours). The fibroid was so big they had to remove it by cutting from my belly button down to my pubic bone. Recovery took about 9 weeks for me. 8 weeks was too short but I was ready to go back to work by 10 weeks. It has definitely given me a new lease of life. You will get tired easily in the early days, but you will notice yourself feeling better quite quickly. You will need support, particularly for the first few weeks, and my DP was an absolute gem who made sure I ate good nourishing food, drank plenty of fluids, and kept on top of the medication.

littlemisspickles · 18/12/2025 02:13

I had a large fibroid and all internal gubbins removed 6 years ago, my recovery was far easier than anticipated. So that is also possible. Best of luck
