Looking for a circumcision doctor

Jaqchic · 20/01/2005 13:13

Can anyone recommend a private doctor in the London area who has performed a (male) circumsion for them? I don't want to get into a debate about the whys and wherefores of circumcision, but I am trying to find a reliable and reputable doctor with experience in this area. I don't care if they are a mohel or muslim practioner or non religious but I am looking for a doctor who will perform this in a proper surgical setting, not someone to come and do it in my home.

Thanks.

Urologist who practices in your local BUPA or Nuffield hozzie, or in Portland St.?

Will ask a Jewish friend of mine who has a list of the best of everything. Will post Friday morning.

morningpaper · 21/01/2005 08:11

MY friends did this (they are American). They had to ring round all their local synagogues until they found someone who was willing to do it. They had to have a full Jewish ceremony. They tried six synagogues I think.

I don't believe that a doctor will do it for any reasons other thaan medical in this country.

Tissy · 21/01/2005 09:06

have you asked your GP?- he/she may well know of a sympathetic local surgeon.

StuartC · 21/01/2005 09:08

If this is for an adult male, then I wish you success with your search.
If, as is more likely, it is non-theraputic surgery to be performed on a child who is not old enough to give or refuse consent, shame on you.

ARGH foreskin police!

lowcalCOD · 21/01/2005 09:37

misdee · 21/01/2005 09:39

There's a guy at the Portland Consulting Rooms who does it or at least used to do it. I forget his name, but if you ring their main number (search for the Portland Hospital and look for the consultant directory -- sorry for not linking, I'm in a rush) and ask, they'll help you.

Cod, I'm assuming you'd need a cosmetic surgeon. Don't have a recommendation for that, sorry.

Jaqchic · 21/01/2005 11:29

Thanks everyone. I have already asked my GP and Health Visitor, both said they would look into it and let me know, neither got back to me. I know the Portland clinic does it, I just wondered if anyone knew of anywhere else. I believe Tooting Hospital will do it, but we don't live in that area. And to those who want to be judgmental about this issue, I made a simple request for information, not your opinion based on god knows what prejudices you might have.

And FYI both my GP and Health Visitor commented that they believe male circumcision is a good idea and should be available on the NHS!

Um, if you don't want an argument about circumcision, then it's probably best to just stick to asking for recommendations, rather than expressing your own prejudices and opinions, or those of your health visitor and GP.

nasa · 21/01/2005 11:40

indeed - you can't have it both ways

True but I don't think I should have to leave a personal attack undefended. My husband and I have our reasons for wanting this procedure carried out, they are personal to us and I do not intend to disclose them here. I made a simple request for information - some people have responded in the spirit of that but it seems others cannot resist making assumptions and throwing stones. I'll leave it at that. If anyone can reccomend any doctors, I'll be very grateful. If not, that's fine.

Not going to enter into a full debate here but your GP and HV are wrong if that is what they have stated. For healthy boys with no problems, circumcision is not recommended. Found this info for you here

nasa · 21/01/2005 11:47

back to the old "if you post on a public forum then you have to accept you will get other responses that you might not like" argument

Jaqchic · 21/01/2005 11:51

Of course I accept that Nasa, I am well versed in the social mores of internet forums, being a moderator on a busier one than this, but the rules of this board also state that others' parenting decisions should be respected. Comments like "shame on you" are hardly respectful.

Thank you and good night!

Troll?

skeptic · 21/01/2005 11:53

There are busier forums that this one? I find that hard to believe!

Jaqchic · 21/01/2005 11:54

OMG I am SO NOT a troll! I am genuinely trying to find some information. Good grief. And YES there are forums even busier than this one.

OP posts:
nasa · 21/01/2005 11:54

after reading that phrase skeptic I was very tempted to write "well bully for you, perhaps they can help with your request" but obviously that would be childish of me

mears · 21/01/2005 11:54

Jaqchic - will this help circumcisionagency
