What is this illness?? Anyone else had this?

Lockdownbaby2021 · 11/03/2025 20:58

Has anyone else had this awful virus going around??
I’ve never had anything like it. I’ve had Covid twice and it was nothing like this.
started 9 days ago with a cough, sore throat and feeling wishy washy, then the next day I couldn’t even lift my head off the pillow.
since then it’s been.

  • drenching night sweats
  • tinnitus
  • the most horrendous phlegm, lumpy and green!
  • a cough that sounds like I’ve smoked cigs all my life, never have!
  • Sinus pain
  • foggy headed
  • dizzyness
  • swollen glands
  • lack of taste and smell (not like Covid when it’s completely gone)

I sometimes feel like I’m getting better but then the next day feel like I’ve been hit by a bus again.
I’ve never known it phlegm like it.
this cough is relentless, it’s uncontrollable and I wet myself each time.

I’ve had all sorts of bugs in the past but this has been going on 9 days and I just don’t feel like I’m moving forward. Is their some sort of horrendous strain of flu going round??

I’ve been to the pharmacist today who has given me some over the counter decongestant and I will be going to docs if it’s not gone in the next week.

my family have all had it, kids have had raging temps and DP has had similar symptoms but is better now!

not looking for pity, just wondering if anyone’s had similar and found out what it was ?

Me!
I've got this and I'm on day 10 and feel like it's never going to end. I feel rotten. I read your post and I could've written it myself!

Lockdownbaby2021 · 11/03/2025 21:36

@Goonie1 sorry to hear you’re feeling the same! It’s really rubbish but I do find reassurance in the fact you’ve got the same!
I’ve now started with a sore throat on one side tonight! 😥honestly feels like it won’t end

Flu A, it has me feeling wrong for weeks! I don’t think I started feeling completely normal again for about 5 weeks. The chesty/phlegmy cough just seems to go on forever!

WiseFinch · 11/03/2025 21:40

Me!! I started a thread on this on Saturday! Mine not so bad as yours but I am early 20s (no offence intended here!), many of my older colleagues have the same thing and it has really knocked them out. I had it for a week and still have lingering cough about 12 days later but it seems to be going away now. I think Covid or flu.

Goonie1 · 11/03/2025 21:44

Hope you're feeling better soon. I'm just fed up with it! Im no good at just resting but if I didn't have the children to look after, I think I would've just spent the past 10 days in bed and that's not like me at all.
I felt like I was on the mend on day 4 but then 5 I was 10 times worse. Same again with day 8 and 9. I look just as bad as I feel 😩

TinkerbellStarbright · 11/03/2025 21:45

I’m a nurse and it sounds like flu

influenza a is currently rife

you must drink plenty and sleep as much as possible x

Lindy2 · 11/03/2025 21:58

We all had flu in December.

DD16 was literally bedridden.

DH passed out and knocked himself unconscious. He ended up being taken to hospital in an ambulance in case it was a heart attack. It was flu.

It was not a very festive Christmas.

I recovered OK from flu myself but now I've got another cold and the kids feel sick again.

Honestly this winter has been one of the worst for illnesses I've ever known.

I hope everyone feels better soon.

This must have been the first time I’ve had flu as I’ve never experienced this before. Deffo more long winded than covid!! I agree, we’ve had back to back illness in our house since October. I only had a bad cold 3 weeks before this l!

Or covid! Why does nobody consider covid any more ? It hasn't gone away

I’ve had it twice (two different strains) and it passed a lot quicker than this! I knew I had covid the second time round this is completely different for me personally

DH has had it for 10 days. He’s still not well. Pretty sure it’s flu. Thankfully the rest of us have not caught it

No it hasn't gone away, you're right. However, I've had Covid about 6 times (that I knew of) and it's never been anything like this.

OogieBoogiO · 11/03/2025 22:12

Husband just came home from the UK with a horrible flu and barely able to walk. We’ve had 2 flus i 2 weeks already here in Germany - I do not want a third one.

itsnotabouthepasta · 11/03/2025 22:13

I’ve had it for three weeks. The doctor told me it was potentially something called hmpv which is circulating fairly heavily around the uk

RaininSummer · 11/03/2025 22:24

I had it 6 weeks ago now and still have a bit of a cough and chestiness. Took weeks for the fatigue to go.

Mamofteenager · 11/03/2025 22:26

My DD age 19 at uni has had this for 2 weeks now, has felt very poorly. Finally got to see a GP today and has been diagnosed with Strep A. Been prescribed a 10 day course of anti biotics so hopefully will feel better soon.

ShaunaSadeki · 11/03/2025 22:28

My DH had it, properly ill for a week, not quite right for another week but back at work and then a week after that he tried to do Park Run and had to give up after a few hundred yards because he couldn’t breathe properly.

ChewbaccaAteMyHamster · 11/03/2025 22:34

My DD at uni had something the same as this at the end of January. She was bedridden for a whole week. She said she had never been so poorly. She had awful fatigue for weeks after and has only recently started feeling completely well again. Knocked her for 6 and she is only 19.

Floranan · 11/03/2025 22:35

I’m just getting over it, been ill since the day after Boxing Day, I was so bad New Year’s Eve DH called an ambulance out, I couldn’t breath and had a panic attack I have a heart condition which is why DH panicked. The doctor said it was flu like virus.

i had flu when I was 10 ( I’m 60 now) and I can remember being so ill but I’m sure I recovered quicker, must be my age. But honestly I’ve no appetite I’ve lost just over 2 stone since Christmas, and I’ve no energy. I cleaned the bathroom today, a good clean walls etc, then slept for an hour after I was so tired.

ive got another doctors appointment tomorrow just to monitor how I’m doing, but I’m feeling better than I did last week, so I’m finally on the mend.

Socksorter · 11/03/2025 22:37

I am just getting over this, its been awful and I tested and it was covid. Have had covid twice before but it was nowhere near as bad as this
Its been phlegmy, fluey, and such a horrible deep cough, also everything tasted weird. Feel absolutely exhausted
I only tested out of curiosity, but loads of family and friends are ill too with lingering symptoms

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 11/03/2025 22:41

Yes! Came down with it Sunday before the one just gone (2nd March). Now have pneumonia. Doctor I saw in Urgent Care at the weekend said it seems like Covid and that there's a nasty strain prevalent where I am (North London) but I've not had a positive LF test and don't know anyone else with it. I've also had all my boosters as I've had pneumonia in the past with Covid. I don't think that I've ever felt this ill in my life as I have these past ten days. I didn't even brush my teeth the first three days as I couldn't stay upright long enough.

kitchenwwyd · 11/03/2025 22:41

You can buy lateral flow tests for Flu in Tesco / Boots now. My DH was really unwell for a week so I got Covid and Flu tests and ta-dah it was Influenza A! Myself and kids had the flu vaccine and we didn’t get it despite very close contact

BreatheAndFocus · 11/03/2025 22:42

It’s not necessarily flu. There’s also an extremely unpleasant cold-type virus going round that is incredibly hard to shake off. The description sounds like this. I got it 5 weeks ago and am only now beginning to feel more myself. The throat, the mucus, the sinusitis, the sweats, the exhaustion, the feeling a bit better then feeling like you’ve been hit with a hammer the next day is par for the course with this virus. I had influenza A in Dec and this isn’t the same.

It’s not flu because I have flu tests and tested. Also, a colleague went to the GP and had flu and Covid tests down as their coughing was so bad and they’d had it weeks. It wasn’t either of those. The GP said it was a nasty virus that many people were finding took ages to shake off. He recommended rest. Rest does help, as do steam inhalations, Sambucol, and various other things to get you through it.
