What is this illness?? Anyone else had this?

Lockdownbaby2021 · 11/03/2025 20:58

Has anyone else had this awful virus going around??
I’ve never had anything like it. I’ve had Covid twice and it was nothing like this.
started 9 days ago with a cough, sore throat and feeling wishy washy, then the next day I couldn’t even lift my head off the pillow.
since then it’s been.

  • drenching night sweats
  • tinnitus
  • the most horrendous phlegm, lumpy and green!
  • a cough that sounds like I’ve smoked cigs all my life, never have!
  • Sinus pain
  • foggy headed
  • dizzyness
  • swollen glands
  • lack of taste and smell (not like Covid when it’s completely gone)

I sometimes feel like I’m getting better but then the next day feel like I’ve been hit by a bus again.
I’ve never known it phlegm like it.
this cough is relentless, it’s uncontrollable and I wet myself each time.

I’ve had all sorts of bugs in the past but this has been going on 9 days and I just don’t feel like I’m moving forward. Is their some sort of horrendous strain of flu going round??

I’ve been to the pharmacist today who has given me some over the counter decongestant and I will be going to docs if it’s not gone in the next week.

my family have all had it, kids have had raging temps and DP has had similar symptoms but is better now!

not looking for pity, just wondering if anyone’s had similar and found out what it was ?

My appetite is completely gone also, I realised yesterday I hadn’t eaten in nearly 22 hours and I didn’t feel at all hungry.
I feel nauseous after eating.
I’m sticking with crackers, toast, granola and biscuits for now. Can’t seem to stomach rich food at all.

I just ate soup, bread and ready salted crisps I couldn't stomach much else, although I was having an orange just to have a bit of fruit in me.

I found pineapple juice very nice to drink. The GP suggested it as it’s very good at cutting through mucus.

NoisyBrain · 14/03/2025 09:00

3 weeks and 5 days for me so far!

Started with a sore throat for about 5 days, then the cold-like snot and coughing came for a few days, then seemed to be going, then sinusy snot hit with a vengeance last weekend, then the deep, chesty cough, which (touch wood!) seems a little better today, though my sinuses are still awful. I completely lost my sense of taste, then it came back a bit and has now gone again!

I haven't been bedridden at any point and haven't had a temperature, so had ruled out flu - maybe it's this HMPV thing. I didn't even think to test for Covid as it feels very different to that (had it twice, identical symptoms both times).

I’ve gone backwards today. Shivery, coughing, losing my voice, so tired. Went back to GP this evening and he’s arranged a chest xray for me for Monday and I have to have bloods done.

He mentioned possible atypical pneumonia or bronchitis - said he could hear a wheeze on my chest. He said if it’s viral then no point in antibiotics. I’m not sure how they’ll know, I guess they’ll see what the chest xray shows.

It will be 4 weeks on Monday from when I first came down with it. I’m completely sick of it now.

Lockdownbaby2021 · 15/03/2025 00:03

So update for me guys, yesterday was a bad day. I felt ok in the morning then I had a throbbing sinus pain, coughing and blowing lumpy lime green stuff 😷again! This morning I woke up and had a wheeze and the throbbing sinus pain that burns the back of your nose when you talk! I decided enough was enough and I went to the pharmacist and they’ve given me antibiotics for my sinus’s, so im hoping it will also clear whatever else is left on my chest too.
nearly 2 weeks in now and can still hands down say this has been the longest illness I’ve had to date. I find it so strange how one day I can feel ‘ok’ and the next get the shivers, awful cough and wheeze again. Will keep you all updated. Sending get well wishes to all x

strange a lot of us who’ve had Covid more than once just know the difference with this illness! Covid it was scratchy throat then sweats and tiredness both times but better within a few days. Makes you wonder what this one is !! I’ve heard a few things about hmpv, so I’m guessing it’s that or influenza a

I had this flu for 3 weeks full on then a fortnight kinda of slowly getting back to normal. Lost December to it. My second bout of flu in my 52 years. Both dreadful. It’s why I get irritated by people saying they’ve got the flu when clearly they just have a common cold. Horrible illness. And for pps influenza is a corona virus.

DumpedByText · 15/03/2025 00:47

🙋 yes me, I can honestly say this has wiped me out and I feel truly grim!

I ended up at the GP this morning as I was getting worse. He listened to my chest and I have an infection. So I have antibiotics, I really hope I improve tomorrow.

The sweats in bed are something else, everything requires a huge effort and I'm sleeping most of the day and night.

I hope you all come out the other side soon.

avignon1234 · 15/03/2025 01:26

Yes. I never get ill (really, years go by) but had most of symptoms described for 2 weeks, mainly green phlem and chest hurting, earache (I have never had earache once in 50 years) and a general feeling of illness, and hoping the next day for better, and sometimes it it, but going up and down. Son (27) , also never ill - went to A&E for sudden agonising headaches, and some of the above, diagnosis was flu, nasty strain going about. Have taken more ibuprofen, and hot lemons than I ever have for 30 years, and that's helped but not "feeling right" for a few weeks really knocks you. Sympathies to all going through it ! x

Runningoutofpatiencefucksandmoney · 15/03/2025 01:26

I'm so glad I came on to see if there was a thread about this. I feel SO ill. I had pneumonia before Christmas and was really ill. Lo and behold Tuesday I felt like I'd been hit by a bus and it came out of nowhere. Sore throat on one side, pounding headache, the phlegm is awful and feels lits wrapped around my tonsils. I slept from Tuesday night through to Thursday afternoon. Only 2 days less than at my worst point with the pneumonia. My head is like fog and I'm beyond exhausted. Never mind the shivers and sweats in equal measures. I hope everyone starts to feel better soon

Cosplay · 15/03/2025 07:35

My sickness record in work is currently appalling. 4 weeks ago I self certified the first week of the illness and was then signed off for a further two.
I went back after one week as I was starting to feel better (bad move as it was torture) so I’ve worked two weeks now and have now been signed off again for a week whilst I get the chest xray and bloods done.

This has been a terrible illness - GP said he’s seeing people with mixtures of flu, RSV and Covid and because they don’t routinely test it could be any or a combination of viruses.

I have had days where I feel that I’m improving but the the next day I can feel back at square one. I’ve lost over a month where we’ve not been out properly, done anything nice as I’ve just felt so unwell. I really hope it buggers off soon.

repellingmnvipers · 15/03/2025 07:38

If you have a productive cough surely you need antibiotics and not a decongestant?

Heebeebee · 15/03/2025 08:13

I have this exact bug at the moment! I'm on day 5 and just starting to feel better. It's really awful! I took 2 Covid tests when I lost taste and smell but they were both negative. Horrible virus!

FoxtrotOrange · 15/03/2025 10:18

I'm still really poorly with mine. I thought I was getting better and then have had a throbbing headache for two days. I also get bouts of feverish trembling, coughing and blocked sinuses. DH is also still feeling rough. It feels neverending

Namechange13101 · 15/03/2025 10:32

On day 6 here, day 1 and 2 was just a phlegmy cough and actually felt fine and was at work. then woke up Wednesday like I’d been hit by a train with a temp, sinus pain and really blocked nose and unable to taste or smell anything at all! Currently can’t laugh without it causing a massive coughing fit, sinus pain not being touched by any of the usuals and sleep is horrendous being not able to breathe through my nose! My 6yr old had a couple of days off school with it but has bounced back and hubby and son so far untouched! No amount of painkillers or steam seems to be making a dent in it!

This is the same as me. I hadn’t had a fever for a few weeks until yesterday when I was slightly hot all day. Hence the trip back to GP.

Has anyone had this go back a month or so? I’m beginning to worry there’s something seriously wrong with me

I had a cold about a month ago, this cleared but was left with sinus problems then a couple weeks later this started.
been on antibiotics 24 hrs now and my sinus’s and headache are still killing me. How long do they usually take to tackle something like this??

But I do know exactly how you feel. I haven’t felt ‘normal’ since lockdown ended years ago. Always something wrong with me health wise, anxiety wise, but this is hands down the worst!
I just feel like I’m just not the same person in my body. Sick of being ill all the time

Mine started 14 days ago, woke up with a terrible sore throat and throbbing headache then a very dry cough.I had to sleep sitting up because every time i laid down i had a coughing fit,The dry cough lasted a week and then developed into a phlegmy cough.I still have to sleep sitting up and the exhaustion is something else.I have had flu twice in my life and covid three times but i have never felt this ill.My grandaughter in Australia has it so its obviously worldwide..

HuntingtonHaven18 · 15/03/2025 17:31

Yes me too! All similar symptoms. Started as a low grade cold that then went to chest. Very phlegmy. 4 weeks ago! Just finished a course of antibiotics that definitely helped but went back to dr today as still coughing a huge amount. I was told this afternoon that they have seen a huge number of people with this and the average length of the cough is 10 weeks! She just said paracetamol, manuka honey, lemon and rest. So fed up with it now. Solidarity with everyone else though.

Cosplay · 15/03/2025 19:09

Has anyone else been off work? I initially lost two weeks at the beginning when I was properly bed / sofa bound, back in work two weeks where I struggled and have been signed off next week again as my chest is still bad 🫣

HuntingtonHaven18 · 16/03/2025 09:30

Have woken up this morning and for the first time have not started coughing. It is there but not nearly as bad. I realise there will be the psychological effect from being told it will last a long time (so I don’t worry that it is going on so long) but I really believe I started feeling better after I tried the hot honey and lemon. The nurse said it has to be manuka. I squeezed a lemon with two heaped teaspoons of honey and topped up with hot water. Worth a try?

Lockdownbaby2021 · 17/03/2025 08:06

so i'm on day 4 of antibiotics for my sinus's. i feel like it's cleared my chest up more but stilll seem bunged up at the top of my nose.
to top it off i've woken up with conjunctivitis, when will this end ???

yes, I had to take three days off because I was in hospital two nights. I know what’s causing mine if that helps anyone as was tested in hospital , Pneumonia and pleurisy cause by Flu A. It’s been really horrible and like others I’m still ill and its into the fifth week of this. I’ve had two sets of antibiotics, chest X-rays and scans, and another night in A&E when they were worried about sepsis so they thought sending me to sit on the floor of a hospital for 13 hours overnight would help. That was actually like torture I felt so rotten and didn’t get any sleep at all as I didn’t get home until about 5.45am, basically in time to lie in bed for an hour before I had to get up again

sympathy to everyone

NewMarmiteJar · 17/03/2025 09:17

I think I’ve had 2 continuous bouts of it. I’m sick of it, am so damn miserable, I just want to feel normal again.
