Diarrhoea for 5 days making me miserable

So I had diarrhoea a little while ago, Wednesday it was I believe a few times that day. Stomach pain, couldn’t have anything tight on my waist, nausea. Still felt a bit iffy the next day but not too bad. Came down with a uti the next day, on antibiotics from Friday - Sunday. Got thrush, treated that on Sunday night with internal pessary.

Sunday felt a bit off. I thought it was because I found a caterpillar in my food. I don’t know if I ate one accidentally or not. Assume it came from my broccoli. Apparently if it was one of the bugs off of a broccoli it’s not harmful, but I felt icky anyway and have been worrying about it. Monday diarrhoea started. I am also nauseous, no appetite, left sided flank pain, upper abdominal pain, pelvic pain.

The diarrhoea is bright yellow water. Sometimes there is mucous. Usually the diarrhoea is in the morning and then nothing / just mucous for the rest of the day.

I am able to pass gas without following through which I think is positive and then the diarrhoea starts again.

Google tells me it shouldn’t last this long and to contact a GP, which I will do on Monday.

I don’t feel systematically unwell, I have energy, doing usual activities, temperature about 37.1-37.3. But I am feeling a bit stressed about what this is and when I’ll be feeling better.

has anyone had similar and can give me hope on when recovery could be expected? Every day i wake up hoping and the same symptoms are there. I’ve never had symptoms like this before, particularly the left sided pain

stomach flu drink isotonic drinks to help with fluids and you can ring nhs direct for advice

whatiswrongwithmygut · 31/08/2024 15:43

I don’t want to do 111 as they’re busy enough and it doesn’t feel urgent. I’m just nervous about what it is and why it isn’t improving. I’ve only ever had diarrhoea once that was worse than this and that was a super long time ago. I’m sure the diarrhoea itself had improved by now though, it wasn’t so frequent. This feels the exact same since it started, if not worse as the left sided flank pain has only been here the last couple of days.

whatiswrongwithmygut · 31/08/2024 16:29

i find its better to ring them

witheringbook · 31/08/2024 16:40

I had similar and it was campylobacter food poisoning. It lasted a couple of weeks. Was given antibiotics which got rid of it.

Hope yours clears up soon OP :-(

whatiswrongwithmygut · 31/08/2024 16:46

@witheringbook thank you. I think I’ve had that before when I was really poorly. I’m not that poorly now, but the left sided pain is bothering me and the bright yellow liquid just isn’t abating. I’ve lost 5lbs already.

what were your symptoms?

OP posts:
witheringbook · 31/08/2024 16:54

They were pretty much as you describe. It was radio active in colour!

Sister has had the same type but was less ill than I was. Same symptoms but cleared up quicker.

It sucks ☹️

whatiswrongwithmygut · 31/08/2024 16:58

Yes! Exactly! Radioactive 😂

nobody else is sick. It’s so bizarre.

Eat bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast. Nothing else. It helps to binds it all up. Drink plenty of water.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 31/08/2024 16:59

Most diarrhoea is self limiting, but if you can wait till Monday and call GP I'd do that, and be prepared to take a sample in to send for the lab

whatiswrongwithmygut · 31/08/2024 17:50

Because of the antibiotics I’m worried about c diff and colitis. My whole left side feels like it’s twice the size and like I have a stitch.

gamerchick · 31/08/2024 17:53

YES. I had it, it was a lurgy that even imodium wouldn't stop. Ring piece stung like a bastard by the end

It did clear up though. Just some random thing that's going about.

Balloonhearts · 31/08/2024 17:54

It might be the antibiotics doing it, they can upset your stomach.

Aussiegold · 31/08/2024 17:57

Oh god, I've got this at the moment and have been to the doctors. Bloods have been taken and sample sent off. Hopefully, will report back when I have the results.

whatiswrongwithmygut · 31/08/2024 18:48

@Balloonhearts i finished them on Sunday, and didn’t have the diarrhoea when I was on them

@Aussiegold are your symptoms exactly the same? How long have you been poorly? I’m so sorry to hear! I’m fed up already.

Sunnysideup999 · 31/08/2024 18:57

The antibiotics may have messed with your gut further so your recovery is slower. Stick to a v simple diet.
did the uti go? The flank pain could mean it is still there / ascending.
I hope you feel better soon

whatiswrongwithmygut · 31/08/2024 19:01

@Sunnysideup999 yes at the moment I am eating plain pasta, rice, eggs, toast, bananas and Greek yoghurt. Very boring!

the UTI definitely went and was confirmed clear by dipstick. The flank pain is at the front rather than back anyway. I expect it’s my colon / intestines.

MSLRT · 31/08/2024 19:10

There seems to be some bug doing the rounds with these symptoms. Lasts a good week.

whatiswrongwithmygut · 31/08/2024 19:10

@MSLRT oh really! That’s interesting.

Have you tested for Covid. It can start with diarrhoea.

caringcarer · 31/08/2024 23:44

Imodium.

I had that last year after three weeks the GP gave me some tablets which worked thank goodness. I'm never going back to that restaurant!!

The mucus is caused by your bowel being irritated by food passing through it so quickly and 'damaging/removing' the protective lining of cells. The body does not have time to grow another one so protects the bowel lining with mucus.
Try not eating for 24 hours- just plain water with a small amount of salt and a teaspoon of sugar added. Then move onto white bread and scrambled egg for 24 hours- lowfibre.
