Just choked alone

Literally that. Eating spaghetti, suddenly went down the wrong way. Short of breath, but tried not to panic and remembered to cough. Not getting any better so went to toilet and pressed my chest against the bowl and coughed again until it came out suddenly, then was sick again. Shaky...and still alone, but very very glad for my first aid training

That sounds terrifying. I hope you are ok now x

Berga · 10/07/2024 20:33

I'm sorry to hear this, it's very scary. I hope you are ok now.

Normalinnit · 10/07/2024 20:34

We’re here - so sorry, how frightening

Sprig1 · 10/07/2024 20:35

You did a great job, well done. How scary.

lambsandlion · 10/07/2024 20:36

Thanks, it was just scary!

So impressed by you! Chocking could be so scary.

GruntledGoblin · 10/07/2024 20:37

Well done for staying calm and making a plan. That sounds very scary, you must have been properly shaken up. How are you feeling now? X

lambsandlion · 10/07/2024 20:43

I'm feeling pretty shaken tbh, but so so glad I do first aid courses regularly. I'm the designated first aid person but never thought it would be me...and alone. bloody scary1

Oh my god how scary for you - glad you are okay. Also, I realise reading this I had literally no idea what to do if I started choking, so off to have a look - thank you!

clary · 10/07/2024 20:48

Well done @lambsandlion and yes how scary.

My first aid training is out of date so can you explain just what you did? Do you literally push the front of your body against the bowl of the loo - to kind of imitate a heimlich manoeuvre?

Ukholidaysaregreat · 10/07/2024 20:49

Well done! Your calm thinking has got you out of a very tricky situation. 👏👏👏

Fletzy · 10/07/2024 20:50

Oh my goodness, that must have been terrifying. So glad that you had the wherewithal to take the prompt action that you did- well done you.

ButtSurgery · 10/07/2024 20:51

Totally understand, I did similar when I lived alone. I was in a first floor flat and none of the other flats were occupied yet after renovation works.

I threw myself bodily backwards into a wall as hard as I could a few times, and luckily cleared it. My next plan was to try to run into the street where at least if I collapsed I had a chance of someone finding me!

Took me an hour or so to fully calm down the shaking from that and my chest and throat were sore for a couple of days. It's really scary.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 10/07/2024 20:51

Happened to me a few years ago. Choked on a slice of pizza. Difference was I had ds1 in bed who was 10 months old at the time.
Luckily I had done a first aid course for work as well. Literally threw myself onto the arm of the sofa and pizza flew out.

Had a few nightmares after that though.

lambsandlion · 10/07/2024 20:53

Yes just pushed it against the rim in an upper thrust, not banged just tried to push up and thrust. Kind of instinctive, but so relieved when it came out, I can't even begin...stopped shaking now. Scarier now I'm processing

I choked alone some years ago, on a boiled sweet. No air moving whatsoever. Certainly couldn't cough. Or use the phone to call for help. Or make it far enough to reach help. The only chairs were too tall for a short arse like me to do the self-Heimlich over the back of a chair thing. I ran backwards at the wall, slamming into it, and thank god the obstruction popped out. Otherwise, it would have been a rather nasty outcome. Scary.

thatstakingalongtimetoboil · 10/07/2024 20:55

Glad you are ok 💐💐💐

Sunshineandrainbows23 · 10/07/2024 20:56

Oh gosh, that's really frightening. Really well done on remembering your first aid training! I will try and remember the sink tip.

It happened to me when I was home alone when I was about 16 with zero training. A not very chewed segment of orange went down the wrong way and I couldn't breathe at all. Luckily I managed to cough it up, but it was terrifying. Put me off oranges for years. Though I chew properly now ...

I hope you feel less shaken soon xxx

lambsandlion · 10/07/2024 20:56

OMG so lucky. Well done you

Well done OP and well done for getting trained in first aid. Glad you’re ok.

Ailbhe123 · 10/07/2024 20:58

I choked a few weeks ago. I took a potassium vitamin and it got lodged in my airway. I thought it was going to die and was about to run out to the street. I just kept coughing and it came up. Never so scared. I was lightheaded for about an hour afterwards and throat was sore for a couple of days.

Glad you are OK.

TortieRage · 10/07/2024 21:01

I choked on some falafel once, I wasn't on my own but it was terrifying. I couldn't breathe at all and couldnt even cough, and no one I was with was doing anything. Everyone was panicking and dithering and slapping my back but not very hard. I was starting to see spots like before you pass out. Luckily finally one of my friends started properly thumping my back (he had to hit me so hard I had bruises the next day) and the falafel came out.

I had such a rush of adrenaline I couldn't stop shaking, I can't imagine how scary it was on your own. In the moment the thought crossed my mind that no one was going to help me and I was about to die.

godmum56 · 10/07/2024 21:04

This happened to me too some years ago, alone in the house, it really is scary. I heimliched myself against a dining chair back. Like you I had first aid training though my job....wow just read back its more common than i would have thought. Hope you are feeling better now OP

Notsogood24 · 10/07/2024 21:05

Oh bless you!
I frequently choke, probably because I'm a pig and eat to quickly! I just do the absolute biggest coughs I can and pound myself hard on the middle of my chest and usually does the trick. I did not realize you could do a self menouvre so if it happens to me again I will remember this! It's so scary isn't it. The times when I have choked I've been a nervous wreck for hours afterwards!

Sidebeforeself · 10/07/2024 21:10

Spaghetti is a bastard.
