Just choked alone

Literally that. Eating spaghetti, suddenly went down the wrong way. Short of breath, but tried not to panic and remembered to cough. Not getting any better so went to toilet and pressed my chest against the bowl and coughed again until it came out suddenly, then was sick again. Shaky...and still alone, but very very glad for my first aid training

I also live on my own and had some water go down the wrong way. I was coughing so much trying to get it up I was getting very worried. It was a very frightening experience, so to have an item stuck in your throat is so much worse.

But as others have said, thanks for coming on and explaining how you got it out when you must still be shaking all over. I haven't done first aid so didn't know about pushing hard against something to help.

Thank you for this post @lambsandlion i'll look it up now

i have imagined choking in my house alone and thinking how I’d be able to throw the remote to get attention and trying to make it to the nurse next door

It is so scary when things like that happen, especially when you are alone.

I had an issue with eating or drinking a few years ago due to anxiety. I couldn't even swallow water without difficulty. Anyway, I managed to teach my to eat and drink again and was eating some leftover roast dinner, tiny amounts. I was eating a piece of stuffing. Swallowed. And that was it. Stuck in my throat. I was on my own in the house so I had to tell myself to be calm and swallow again. Thankfully it went down but it really shook me.

I’ve choked a couple times and it’s really scary. I had some food lodged in my throat and I thought I was going to die. Instinct made me grab a can of coke and guzzle it really quickly. It worked, the fizz and the food (a piece of meat) flew out my mouth. It happened over four years ago and I still go cold thinking about it, I was properly traumatised by it.

I also choked on water (stupidly laughed while drinking and it went down the wrong way. I was gasping for breath, I couldn’t breath in air. I think I opened the fridge door to get the cold air to clear my airway.

I’ve been nervous of eating and drinking ever since. I never eat without having a drink close by though, just in case it happens again and I never drink if I’m talking/laughing. I’m very mindful doing both these things now as I honestly thought I was going to die both times.

Well done OP. I did the years ago I use an inhaler and users will know often the top often falls off in your bag - a screwed up clear sweet wrapped fell in the mouth piece and I used it and lodged the screwed up wrapped in my throat - it was as alarming as an asthma attack - well done you for dealing with it so calmly - inhaler users make sure this does not happen to you. It was v frightening.

I did this once- thin piece of plastic sweet paper & it literally sealed across the back of my throat & I was bloody driving!

I was literally clawing at the roof of my mouth to try & dislodge it, with one hand & steering with the other!

Was so scary!

Oh my god! How did you get it out?

I'm shocked by how many people have been in this situation alone, how terrifying!

A couple of years ago I choked on a marshmallow...it completely blocked my airway and I couldn't make a sound or cough or anything. Thankfully DH was right beside me though, and 1st whacked my back and when that didn't work he did the Heimlich several times - which didn't work either! He was screaming for DS to get help when I lost consciousness. I came round several minutes later with a room full of neighbours, one of whom had wrestled my jaw open and shoved his arm down my throat to save my life. I know how incredibly fortunate I am to be alive...

Oh wow @Gumbo how absolutely terrifying
