Just choked alone

Literally that. Eating spaghetti, suddenly went down the wrong way. Short of breath, but tried not to panic and remembered to cough. Not getting any better so went to toilet and pressed my chest against the bowl and coughed again until it came out suddenly, then was sick again. Shaky...and still alone, but very very glad for my first aid training

OP please feel free to ask me to edit this post if it offends you but I never realised how dangerous choking was until the friend of someone I worked with died in similar circumstances. She was only in her 30’s. I’m so glad you remembered what to do & it’s made me take note should I ever be in a similar situation. I hope you’re feeling ok, it sounds really terrifying.

BirthdayRainbow · 10/07/2024 21:16

This reminds me of a time I was a nanny. The baby got a piece of apple stuck. It was literally in my contract I was not allowed to smack the child. Not necessary as I wouldn't but fine. I figured telling the mum their child had died was worse than confessing to smacking her. I laid her across my knees and gave two smacks to the back then the apple flew out.

AloeVerity · 10/07/2024 21:18

There’s a Tina Fey sketch about this exact scenario in 30 Rock. Glad you’re ok, OP.

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 10/07/2024 21:22

Well done for staying calm OP.
I shall remember your advice. This type of situation terrifies me.
I hope you're OK.

ByCupidStunt · 10/07/2024 21:27

Have you got any pets? I read somewhere that if you died in the house your cat will start to eat you within 2 days. Your dog would wait for 5 though. Grin

Glad you're ok.

AutumnFroglets · 10/07/2024 21:30

Well done OP. This is the sort of thing that terrifies me post divorce especially since I seem to be able to choke on lumpy air.

That must have been so frightening! Well done for knowing/ remembering what to do in such a scary situation, glad you’re okay now!

DontBiteTheCat · 10/07/2024 21:36

That must have been really frightening for you, I’m so glad you’re ok.

I choked on a sausage (not a euphemism) earlier this year out having breakfast and I’ve never been so scared. It was not like I expected at all, I couldn’t make a sound. Luckily a friend saw what was happening and hit me hard enough on my back to dislodge it but I’ll never forget the sheer panic I felt x

lambsandlion · 10/07/2024 21:38

So glad if it helps anyone, or makes people look it up, and so so glad I literally followed 1st aid steps on auto pilot! Well done everyone who has already gone through this :)

So scary. I live alone and I never even considered this risk. Will be swotting up. Glad you are ok OP.

Soubriquet · 10/07/2024 21:42

What a horrible thing to happened. And what a shitty way to die. Here lies lambsandlions. She choked to death on spaghetti.

The closet I came was with my dd. She was eating crisps and starting to choke. I didn’t even realise what I was doing as I automatically picked her up, laid her across my knee and slapped till it came out.

TerrysNeapolitan · 10/07/2024 21:43

Well done OP. I did the years ago I use an inhaler and users will know often the top often falls off in your bag - a screwed up clear sweet wrapped fell in the mouth piece and I used it and lodged the screwed up wrapped in my throat - it was as alarming as an asthma attack - well done you for dealing with it so calmly - inhaler users make sure this does not happen to you. It was v frightening.

MimitteAndElsaGoToSwitzerland · 10/07/2024 21:45

Oh blimey. I live on my own and this runs through my mind. That and tripping and injuring myself. I really worry about my cat too because it would be ages before one of my friends called the police.

Thank god you managed to sort it!

hildabaker · 10/07/2024 21:47

So glad you're ok OP, and thank you for this thread, I have never even thought before about what you should do if this happens. Now, I will have some idea.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 10/07/2024 22:00

That is so scary, I once choked on a bit of steak when I lived on my own

I was slamming my back into walls and whacking my front on to the back edge of the sofa, all the while wondering how long it would be before someone found my body.

My vision was closing in when it finally dislodged and came out - I was shaking and crying for ages afterwards

A big hand hold, it is quite traumatic

Surely the no smacking rule would be in regards to discipline smacking as opposed to first aid?

Hedonism · 10/07/2024 22:17

Oh my goodness, how scary for you. I hope you are feeling ok now. I heard about a couple where the wife choked on something whilst the husband was upstairs, he came down and found she had died. I always thought that if that happened to me, I'd try to crash around so my DH came to see what was happening, but there is some much more practical advice on this thread - thank you.

spikeandbuffy · 10/07/2024 22:25

If you're with someone and they start to cough when eating and go off to the toilets, follow them
It's instinct that people choking try to be alone (maybe embarrassment)

FuckingFreezing · 10/07/2024 22:25

I will remember this post as I live alone. Very glad you are okay OP xx

BloomOfRoses · 10/07/2024 22:43

Glad you are ok op, how scary for you!
Thank you for sharing this with us all. Everyone needs to know what to do in this situation.

Well obviously but in the moment..

Copperoliverbear · 10/07/2024 23:02

Thank God You are okay, it would put me off eating spaghetti for a very long time x

Lougle · 10/07/2024 23:04

I'm so glad you were able to keep a clear head.

I regularly choke (weak epiglottis, I think) and my family all know that if I start waving my hands around and don't speak, they have to just whack me on the back.

PoopingAllTheWay · 10/07/2024 23:08

If anyone is in this situation and you have neighbours , do try and get to them, they can start cpr if and when things get more serious

DampDust · 10/07/2024 23:10

lambsandlion · 10/07/2024 20:53

Yes just pushed it against the rim in an upper thrust, not banged just tried to push up and thrust. Kind of instinctive, but so relieved when it came out, I can't even begin...stopped shaking now. Scarier now I'm processing

God you poor thing! And alone, what a nightmare (((hugs)))
