Summer virus doing the rounds??

Hi all, I’ve been sick for the past week and annoyingly I just moved house as well… so perfect timing!

anyway, I’ve taken two COVID tests and while both have been negative, it really feels COVID like. I have body aches, chills, an extremely sore throat that feels like a lump, lost my voice, and a terrible cough, not only that but the tiredness is INSANE. I cannot stop sleeping.

has anyone else experienced or experiencing similar?

my partner and I feel like it could be a strain of COVID…. As we have both had it in the past and this feels similar due to how it wipes you out, but it could just be a nasty virus that’s circulating atm. I just can’t believe how tired and fatigued I am, I’m completely wiped.

Post Covid, separately, I got a viral chest infection. I was better for a few days in between. Suddenly felt very unwell 2 Thursday evenings ago, lo and behold this time 2 weeks ago (Saturday) I woke up with a cough. It's been horrendous. DS had it then DH and me. DS has recovered but DH and me still suffering.

It's been 16 days and I'm still coughing, bringing up phlegm, feeling run down. When does it end! Someone told me they had it for 7 weeks.

The worst bit is there was one day (yesterday) I felt ok and then today suffering again. DS does wake early and hadn't been sleeping but by some miracle has slept through 9/10 past nights, a couple 5.30am wakes, mostly 6am. Either way, we are getting 7 hour blocks of night sleep and shouldn't be suffering so long!

I'm just slowly recovering from this, it's day 12 since symptoms started. I already had Covid in May and tested negative this time so pretty sure it's not Covid.

Sore throat, fever (38.6C at its highest), fatigue, then a horrible dry cough that causes coughing fits multiple times a day. Feeling generally unwell. Not much congestion or snotty nose.

I wouldn't be totally sure on that.

There are two new variants doing the rounds, and it's totally possible to have them both.

If you keep getting covid, it's (perhaps) less likely to kill you in the acute phase (though covid is still a leading cause of death).

But it seems pretty likely to make you unwell, more likely to catch everything else that's going round (whooping cough is high) and leave you with long covid (rate: roughly one in ten infections) or one of the other conditions it is known to precipitate.

Friend of mine is very sick with the exact same symptoms as everyone else in the family (hubby & 3 children under 15). Everyone else tested positive for covid, but her test was negative. Highly unlikely that she just happens to have caught another virus with the identical symptoms to the other 4 member of the household.

I am sick with this at the moment, day 12 and I’ve caught pneumonia on top of it!

Never had Covid but have some bug with a sore throat at the moment. Weirdly I also have a really sore tongue.”

My husband is feeling really unwell. I’ve had a sore tongue for a week, too.

Louu247 · 13/07/2024 14:46

There’s so many weird symptoms with Covid at the min!

How do you know you've got phenomena, often hear people getting this after have been ill but don't know how it's diagnosed and symptoms to watch out for. Just had Covid and chesty cough separately back to back and now I'm il again after 1 day of feeling ok.

Slugsandsnailsresidehere · 13/07/2024 17:02

Lost count of how many days since it started - maybe 12? Started as what I thought was a 24hr tummy bug then got all horrid covid symptons and bed bound for 3 or 4 days. I'm left with a hacking cough (worse at night so not sleeping much either) and a temp that comes and goes. Hate viruses, covid or not, with a passion now! 🤒

foreverhidden · 13/07/2024 17:21

8 Saturdays in a row now I've been unable to stick to plans and today unable to even go for a walk. So many illnesses and pregnant. I'm so fed up. I dont leave the house just DH and DS bringing home illness after illness and being vulnerable I can't fight them off. Fed up.

I went to the hospital and x ray confirmed it xx

Louu247 · 13/07/2024 19:01

Hope everyone’s feeling better soon, I am utterly sick of being sick constantly, since January I’ve had bud after bug

I had covid last week then felt better for a few days then woke up absolutely ill again

BloomOfRoses · 13/07/2024 19:06

@foreverhidden my symptoms for pneumonia included a frequent high temperature/ chills, constant cough and breathlessness. Also complete loss of appetite and couldn't sleep at night.
It was confirmed with a chest x ray.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/07/2024 19:06

We test lots in our house for various reasons and people entering often test.

No problems with picking up Covid in current LFTs. Gave test to sil too and it picked hers up.

Towerofsong · 13/07/2024 19:10

There definitely seems to be something going around, every time I go in a shop there is someone walking around with a hacking cough, coughing on everything.

RichTea90 · 17/07/2024 03:44

My sore throat has come back with a vengeance and it is so so painful. My throat feels like razor blades and feels swollen, hurts to swallow.

thid is becoming a nightmare in terms of sickness at work, as it’s triggered a sickness warning now 🙄 due to time taken off. I use my voice in my job so at a loss as to how to manage this.

Yep. A couple of weeks ago DH went on a business trip to Germany and three days later he I both came down with a very rough dry cough, sore throat, bad headache, cold sweats and joint pain. Loss of sense of smell, no sneezing though, which is unusual for me with a cold.

Covid test was negative until today, and I’ve been better for a good few days already. As far as I know its the first time I’ve had it. Feel a bit weird about it!

I feel for you, I'm still having coughing fits although slightly less violently. Never been ill for this long in my life and I feel very vulnerable to picking something else up on top.

Ahh thanks. I seem to have been ill three summers in a row, last year I had a terrible cough for 6-7 weeks, I just couldn’t shake it. This year it’s a perpetual sore throat, remedied temporarily by ibuprofen but as soon as that wears off, it’s back to razor blades.

I think there are a lottttt of nasty viruses at the moment and maybe a couple of awful Covid variants. I read somewhere that apparently people’s immunities are low, and with things like the football and increased indoor socialising, it’s swirling all these bugs around! I can’t imagine our terrible wintry summer weather is much helping.

feeling pretty miserable and fed up.

I have a telephone consultation with GP tomorrow. I’m hoping they can prescribe me antibiotics or allow me a note for reduced hours at work!

My cough took 3 weeks but DH and me are better.

Lefmry · 19/07/2024 14:48

Hi @RichTea90 just wondering how you’re doing now?

My whole household has this awful is it Covid is it not Covid? Virus atm. My eldest brought it home from school with him last Wednesday and we all just caught it one after the other, I’d go as far as to say I’ve never actually been this poorly in my whole life.

I have done 5 Covid tests and all negative. But it feels very much like Covid and can’t be anything else surely. We’ve all had temperatures, achy bodies and I’m talking like I’ve been in tears the aches have been that bad, struggled to walk or stretch out my legs without yelping in agony. Headaches, horrific cough, all at least vomited twice, no appetite whatsoever, blocked/runny nose and then there’s the sheer exhaustion. My 18 month old spent the best part of 22 hours asleep on Wednesday and this was on day 6 of the illness for him.

Right now we are all just a bit miserable still, I mean are we better? Maybe by about 25%. But I can’t breathe through my nose still, coughing every 20-30 seconds, exhausted despite being unable to sleep at night because of that poorly congested feeling in your head you get when you lay flat it’s horrible. At this point I am wondering if we will honestly ever get better! 😭 My 18 month old is miserable, it’s so hard to see as he’s the most happiest little soul usually but he just wants nothing to do with anything or anyone.

Please tell me you feel better? 😩🤞🏻

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 19/07/2024 20:59

LFTs aren't hugely reliable with the newer variants of covid. If it's positive, then you've got it (and you should assume everyone in the household has got it too). But negative doesn't mean you've not got it.

This wave is the biggest since 2022, and as we seem hellbent on living with really high case numbers, it's got the most fertile ground possible for brewing up new variants. There are about 3 doing the rounds right now, so back to back infections are happening.

Dread to think what the long covid numbers will be after this summer. Not to mention the burden of all the other infectious diseases that will be that bit more readily caught and that bit worse because of covid's dampening effect on the immune system.

ohthejoys21 · 19/07/2024 21:09

Yup had Covid 3 weeks ago with identical symptoms to yours.. then fine for a few days, and WHACK- another lovely virus where I have so much catarrh that I've had to get antibiotics and I feel like death. Getting my immunity tested had enough.
