Pain between shoulder blades

BeingmummyIsTheBestxo · 03/06/2024 17:43

Currently sat in A & E after GP sent me via ambulance due to horrendous pain in between shoulder blades and radiating toy chest and abdo. Absolutely excruciating. Had some tea and just waiting for th doctor now. I'm freaking out because they said th ECG said sinus arrhythmia. What is this?? I do have gallbladder issues but this pain is not from that. Does anyone know what it could b? Iv literally been roaring in pain since 12 o'clock.

Really wide differential for this. Everything from pneumonia, msk back pain, gallstones, pancreatitis through to things like aortic dissection and posterior MI.... Mkst of the serious ones are excluded with bloods and an ecg, but if it really isnt settling, or worsening, id want a chest xray, or even ct scan.

I did think I should have demanded a chest x ray but they were adamant all bloods were negative and ECG was fine so there would have be n no need in their eyes.

Chest x Ray was the first thing they did on me when I arrived at A&E then the ecg followed by an mri then a ct scan, after that they did the first op to get the stone from my bile duct, then a couple of days later they removedmy gallstones and gallbladder

It's probably clearly my fault, I told them I have doagnod d gallstones but I was adamant that this isn't that. I told them straight out it wasn't the same pain and I'm sure it's not my gallbladder so maybe that's why they sent me packing saying they can't find any issues because they didn't investigate the gallbladder, just EKG and bloods x

The reason I got into such a state was because my pain kept coming and going so I thought it was nothing serious. It is different because it's getting worse and especially when it's painfully to eat. I don't know how it feels for you when eating but for me it was how I imagined it would feel if I was eating broken glass dipped in lemon juice and that was when I was eating soft foods. The pain is higher up so you may have a stone in your bile duct like I did as well as your gallbladder. Go back to Dr and get another opinion

Thank you! I intend to ring GP in the morning! The pain is back so I've just checked some paracetamol and Ibruprofen down. It's right in the middle of my back! Sharp and so very sore and uncomfortable. Feels like ita going through to my chest and feels almost as high up as my throat!
I could just cry! 😭

Ah that's not great disagreeing with the hospital. They'll have let it go at that stage.

GreenShady · 03/06/2024 23:19

I really feel for you. I hope you can get some rest tonight.
After the attack I mentioned the only thing I could eat was Rich Tea biscuits. Bland and comforting!

But I only told them that b cause I was so sure that this pain was not coming from my gallbladder and I thought of they thought it was then they would fob me off without actually checking anything (this happened to me before and I actually had pleurisy)

Paracetamol is best , eat something first if taking ibuprofen because it can give you acid reflux which causes more pain, they gave me tramadol as well as paracetamol and the morphine when I was in hospital . I wouldn't recommend the tramadol though while it's good for the pain withdrawal after being on it for only a couple of weeks was horrible , itchy twitchy legs and really extreme sweating for about two months. Definitely get back to the Dr, pain while eating is miserable, so tell them that and tell them you're not sleeping because of the pain too.

GreenShady · 04/06/2024 09:25

How are you today OP?

How are you today OP?

BeingmummyIsTheBestxo · 04/06/2024 13:50

Update.

Gp won't see me! Said there's no appointments for two weeks. He's looked at my A and E records from yesterday and the bloods and test they took don't suggest infection or any massive issue so just wait for a routine appointment in two weeks! Also, the pain got better and then I've come out in the car this afternoon and the pain is back!! When it started yesterday I was in the car and I had it last Friday as well and was in th car! So maybe it's postural?? I really feel like a postural issue shouldn't b so painful though!

Co-codamol would actually be best for the level of pain OP is describing

maybe so, I was just going by what I was given in hospital and by what my own GP advised about paracetamol being the best over ibuprofen in my case. Sorry that wasn't clear.

OP I'm sorry what you're going through. I can't believe they're refusing to investigate further when you're in so much pain What the heck are you going to do now ?

No idea! Just wait out I suppose and see what happens. Such a nightmare. DH is away until next Tuesday and it's such a hard work with a toddler in tow.

When I was in car earlier I could feel the space between shoulder blades start to tighten, quickly wiggled around and changed my posture which seemed to help. So maybe it's not that serious?

I can't believe I've just seen this thread - the exact same thing is happening to me!
It started 3 mornings ago but settled by mid morning, yesterday morning was slightly worse but this morning was awful and I thought I might be having a heart attack! Really deep, intense burning ache between my shoulder blades and sort of radiating up my trapezius' and collar area. It's settled to a very mild ache just between the shoulder blades now but I'm seeing the GP tomorrow. Each time it's been brought on by having my breakfast which is the main thing that reassured me it likely wasn't cardiac related (well that and a few other factors that made it really unlikely for me personally).
Thinking back, every so often in the last few months some foods have made my right rib/stomach area feel a bit achy and uncomfortable, like a really uncomfortable trapped wind which is unusual for me. I'm so glad I saw this thread and the replies!

Let me know how your appointment goes! Seeing as I can't bloody get one 🙄

I'm unsure whether its my gallbladder b cause I do have stones or if it's muscular so I'd be interested to know what advice you get from the docs!

I'll keep you posted on what they say! Hope yours settles for you in the mean time. I thought muscular too at first but it just seemed like a 'deeper', different kind of pain that I wasn't familiar with if that makes sense. Who knows, I hope it is just muscular and it buggers off!

Mine feels exactly the same. It's the kind of pain that takes your breath away. Absolute kills. Id rather have another baby to be fair!!

Just seeing how you're doing OP, they rescheduled my appointment to Monday so I'm non the wiser yet. I've not had an 'attack' of pain since, but I do have constant low level ache in the area so I'm now wondering if it is actually muscular and it was some sort of intense spasm?! Feels like I need to rolling pin my upper back to crunch it out!

Caerulea · 06/06/2024 11:05

Hope you're doing OK OP & @OnlyFoolsAndHamsters. I'm currently on this pathway atm & having an attack this morning. The first CRAZY attack was a few weeks ago - out-of-my-mind pain, 111 sent an ambulance, but it didn't turn up 🤷🏼‍♀️. Pain is like someone is gripping my spine & it's radiating around my ribs into my upper abdomen, very evenly. Colonoscopy done & all bloods clear of everything. I've got an ultrasound on Saturday to look at my gallbladder (in which was seen a small polyp a few years ago).

I'll update the ultrasound results here for you both, see if it all lines up.

I have an appointment tomorrow! I managed to persuade them I needed to be seen. The pain hasn't been to bad, I find of I sit in certain positions it can come on suddenly and really hurt! I have got power level ache in my right side which feels typical to my gallbladder pains but I'm not sure whether this shoulder pain is related to my gallbladder or not!

In the car again today and I could feel the pain coming back,! I think it HAS to be postural.

OP posts:
OnlyFoolsAndHamsters · 07/06/2024 10:06

I'm starting to think the same of my case with it OP. I ended up at the hospital with another flare up yesterday which was absolutely 9/10 on the pain scale for me. They did bloods, ECG, physical examinations and whatnot and couldn't find anything obviously wrong, so even if it flares up again I'm relieved that it's nothing immediately/obviously serious. Weirdly today it's mainly just my neck/jugular and left collar area that's got the tight throbbing sensation - so I can only assume it must be some weird muscular spasm I'm experiencing.
I did have a tooth pulled last week, I wonder if I've been holding my upper body differently subconsciously?! Who knows. Keep me posted if you get any answers OP, otherwise hope it stays away for you! X
