Pain between shoulder blades

BeingmummyIsTheBestxo · 03/06/2024 17:43

Currently sat in A & E after GP sent me via ambulance due to horrendous pain in between shoulder blades and radiating toy chest and abdo. Absolutely excruciating. Had some tea and just waiting for th doctor now. I'm freaking out because they said th ECG said sinus arrhythmia. What is this?? I do have gallbladder issues but this pain is not from that. Does anyone know what it could b? Iv literally been roaring in pain since 12 o'clock.

I'm starting to think the same of my case with it OP. I ended up at the hospital with another flare up yesterday which was absolutely 9/10 on the pain scale for me. They did bloods, ECG, physical examinations and whatnot and couldn't find anything obviously wrong, so even if it flares up again I'm relieved that it's nothing immediately/obviously serious. Weirdly today it's mainly just my neck/jugular and left collar area that's got the tight throbbing sensation - so I can only assume it must be some weird muscular spasm I'm experiencing.
I did have a tooth pulled last week, I wonder if I've been holding my upper body differently subconsciously?! Who knows. Keep me posted if you get any answers OP, otherwise hope it stays away for you! X

I've been to the GP and they can't find anything either. They've said it must muscular pain and that my back sees tight and painful. She gave me some exercises and a referral to physio. My neck and back of my head also feels a bit sore and tight too!

My gallbladder attacks have always radiated between my shoulder blades, upper back and round into my diaphragm. It literally feels like someone has put a belt around me and they're pulling it as tight as they can

Updating as promised after my ultrasound today - they did find gravel in my gallbladder. I'll get the full report from the gp on Friday but it should explain my pain (which is hurting between my shoulder blades right now).

BeingmummyIsTheBestxo · 08/06/2024 20:59

I'm glad they are getting to the bottom.of it!! I'm still in pain, GP is adamant it's ot relating to my gallbladder and is muscular 🙄

@BeingmummyIsTheBestxo

Op I had this for years and I was sent to a rheumatologist, couldn’t find anything. Eventually ended up in A&E and was thought to be gallbladder finally associated with everything I was eating. I went on a low fat diet, nothing over 5g or fat per 100g which is basically nothing 😂 anyway miraculously as soon as I stopped eating fat the pain disappeared!! I learned there are nerves on the front flank that are connected to your nerves in your neck and shoulders which is why when you get a gallbladder attack you then get referred pain in your neck and shoulders.
the nurse in A&E said I fit the profile, fair, 40, Female, Fat (she said I wasn’t but my bmi at the time said otherwise 5’8 and nearly 13 stone) plus I’ve also been told Farty is a sign. Do you have a lot of gas?
Tmi but mine was terrible eating fat, sinve cutting out fat I’ve lost 2 stone and referred pain has gone and the gas disappeared. Still not cured sadly, on the list for a removal. Delayed as I got pregnant (how I didn’t know as I was so poorly with it) anyway pain has improved and I can eat more as progesterone increase in pregnancy seems to be relaxing my gallbladder but I’ve been warned it will likely return in 3rd trimester or post birth so they will remove once baby arrives.
An MRCP scan would show if a stone was lodged in the common bile duct, which may be causing your severe pain, maybe push for that. Otherwise buscopan and codine and hot water bottles were my only friend! Good luck and hope they get to the bottom of it xx

I had gravel which I'd never heard of. I thought you only got big stones. They still took it out

I have the same type of pain you’re describing OP. After having my gallbladder removed and the pain coming back, they finally diagnosed Sphincter of Oddi. Have a read up on it.
If the pain is anything like I’ve had/have then you have my sympathies. It’s truly horrendous 💐

justasking111 · 08/06/2024 22:15

My husband had a scan a couple of years ago for something unrelated but was told that he had gallstones. He'd never had agonising attacks. But if he eats rich or fatty foods, he pretty quickly needs the bathroom because of an upset stomach.

It annoys me because I've told him to go easy at the table especially when we eat out with family and friends. But nope I'm ignored and we have to leave early because his gut is churning. 🤬

OP, although the pain you had in the past with your gallbladder wasn't as severe as the one you've experienced recently a very large number of people on here have told you that they DID have extremely bad pain between their shoulder blades when they had gallbladder problems. I'm another. My pain was so bad that I felt like climbing the walls, and I had to crouch on the ground on all fours to try to ease it. I had to visit A&E frequently to beg for pain relief until finally I saw a consultant privately. He diagnosed it and removed my gallbladder. Problem solved.

It may be that you're not having a gallbladder problem, but as yet another person who has had cholecystitis that's exactly what it sounds like to me. It's daft for you to discount the idea because the pain isn't the same as the pain you had in the past. Conditions can develop.

I don't know why your GP doesn't seem to know that gallbladder pain can present as very severe pain between the shoulder blades.

I hope you can get this sorted out.

Thanks. The GP on Friday limf of smirked at me and said it was the wrong place for the gallbladder and it would be in my right side. When I have had gallbladder attacks in the past it has radiated to my back, I suppose I've not had an attack in so long maybe I forgot how bad it really is!

Update
I'm in so much pain again tonight! Came on so suddenly. Right between shoulder blades and also upper stomach area..it's absolutely killing and do uncomfortable..taken Ibruprofen and paracetamol isn't touching it. Is it really the dreaded gallbladder making it's comeback? I don't know what to do, I'm panicking, DH is away abroad and it's just me and DS. Really rhi king the worst right now. I just want it to stop!

Yes. Exactly how mine came on when it was time to come out.

Push for it's removed and in the meantime you need to go totally low/none fat. I lived on a tin of chicken noodles soup and a couple of crusty buns a day until it came out. If you leave it you might get the puking into a bucket on top.

I also found that when symptoms started if I leaned over a puffy and jammed the edge under my right rib and stayed there, the pain was somewhat bearable. I even slept like that when it dragged on over a big pile of hard pillows.

I'm currently sat on the edge of the sofa curled over which seems.ro be somewhat halling the pain iny tummy but not the pain in my back.

I had pain up in my shoulders, felt like trapped wind but that happened everytime I had a gallbladder attack until I had it removed

Yes it does kind of feel like something is trapped in my back.

My friend found vomiting eased it

BeingmummyIsTheBestxo · 09/06/2024 22:31

Now lots of belching and gas but it's not doing anything to help the pain 😭
My GP must be on drugs to say it's not my gallbladder. It has to be right?!

Caerulea · 09/06/2024 22:33

I'm so sorry you're going through this! Nothing helped me at all but I also didn't know what was going on. It lasted a couple of hours for me & yes felt like I was going to pop if I didn't burp & if I did the relief was only minor & very temporary.

Your GP sounds like a dick :(

The pain in my back, which is on & off since, is like someone has gripped my spine with their hand incredibly tightly, it's so localised.

Yes it's am awful sharp pain but not particularly constant, like it's constantly dull and then every so often it will come sharply. It's so so sore. Im honestly wondering how I'm going to get through the night.

OP posts:
Caerulea · 09/06/2024 22:56

It's very unlikely it will last the night, mine didn't & everything I've read suggests 6hrs is the max for this kind of stoney shitfit. I wish I'd known at the time what it was so I knew it was going to end without my internal organs being sprayed across the walls.

I was recommend the cow & calf position on here whilst I was freaking out, it is worth a try.

What is that? I've never heard of it. We are moving into the third hour. I'm too scared to crawl upstairs to bed for fear of the pain worsening 😭
Think ive taken a whole pack of gaviscon which doesnt seem to be helping🫣
