Has anyone had their wisdom teeth out and NOT got dry socket?

Clues in the title really. Having my lower two out next week and everyone I tell has had an experience with dry socket!

Absolute worst fear. Has anyone had them out, followed the aftercare advice and they've been fine?!

If you smoke your almost guaranteed to get dry socket. If you don't and follow the advice of the dentist then you should be ok. It's never 100% you won't but by following the advice of the dentist it does reduce the chance.

I had my back lower 2 removed under GA a few months ago, no dry socket but my god the swelling and pain i was not prepared for. Not wishing to scare you but stock up on every painkiller you can and follow the aftercare advice to the letter.

The only good thing that came out of it was I actually stopped smoking, i was terrified of getting dry socket so made sure I didn't smoke then decided it had been 10 days lets keep going!

No dry socket. Fine x

AllLopsided · 02/05/2024 12:28

I've had 3 out, no dry socket but agree with @JustLikeJasper, pain was way worse than I was told it would be. Especially for the most recent one which was complicated (the tooth was very decayed due to the Covid wait, it broke during the extraction and the dentist had to use the drill. She told me to take paracetamol, which I found insulting. Luckily I had Oxycodone at home for other problems and took a double dose when the anaesthetic wore off!

mimblewimble · 02/05/2024 17:05

Had both top ones out, no problems.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 02/05/2024 17:06

2 out under general, one out under local, no problems afterwards at all.

muddyford · 02/05/2024 17:10

All four out under general. This was in 1983. I hadn't even heard of dry socket until this year!

Nannyfannybanny · 02/05/2024 17:14

I had 2 lower molars removed different times, one 30 years ago,one ,8 that was a complicated surgery extraction. Never smoked in my life, followed the post op to the letter. Don't bleed,2 dry sockets. Last one a few days before Christmas, not even an emergency dental service. DH and youngest DS, 4 wisdom teeth each GA, lot of swelling for DH minimal pain for both and no dry sockets

sakura06 · 02/05/2024 17:17

I was ok with my wisdom tooth. I had a molar out and got an infection, but didn't get dry socket. You should be ok as long as you carefully follow the advice.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/05/2024 17:17

I think I had it for one that broke into several pieces (I had corkscrew shaped roots on both sides) during extraction. I say 'think' because I don't ever remember seeing a clot, just a white patch at the bottom of the hole, but nobody had ever mentioned what it was, so I thought it was normal, as was the pain - I'd just had a squiggly-rooted tooth dragged out from the depths of my jaw where it was embedding itself into the side of my molars, after all.

TrtseHkpr · 02/05/2024 17:23

Had both bottom wisdom teeth out and no issues.

siameselife · 02/05/2024 17:27

Yes, DH got it, I didn't.

ShortColdandGrey · 02/05/2024 17:31

Yes, I have had all of mine out without any issues.

Pipeskeepleaking · 02/05/2024 17:33

3 wisdom and 1 other out, no problems.

ButteryNuts · 02/05/2024 17:38

Mine was fine and I did no extra care beyond the first hour or so with gauze. Had a KFC (and drank from a straw) the same evening.

WeightoftheWorld · 02/05/2024 17:39

I've had one impacted one out, it was quite a complicated extraction, had to be drilled into a few parts to extract them etc. Was sore for longer than I expected but no complications. Never had dry socket.

ilovesummerdays · 02/05/2024 17:41

I had no adverse effects. I had my top two removed under sedation and I was fine (if a little drowsy) afterwards and healed as normal.

SallyWD · 02/05/2024 17:49

I've had all 4 out and other teeth. Never had dry socket! I booked a week off work as everyone told me how awful I'd feel having the 4 wisdom teeth out. I was absolutely fine the next morning and wasted a week of leave.

ragdoll12345 · 02/05/2024 17:50

Ive had two out, no problems. Went back to work straight after

sarahc336 · 02/05/2024 17:55

I got it but used a straw, I advise you strongly to avoid a straw!!

ageratum1 · 02/05/2024 19:06

Yes 3 out of 4 were all good

BathshebaEverdene1 · 02/05/2024 19:10

No I never had dry socket but I did follow the after care leaflet quite carefully. You have to leave the clot in place, not brush there , not have hot drinks, not smoke.....

Wednesdaysotherchild · 02/05/2024 19:11

Me! Followed all the guidance and it was fine.

lilyflower1803 · 02/05/2024 19:13

Thank you so much to everyone who is posting! Keep the good vibes coming please 🤣

I've had a top & bottom on the same side out, at different times.
Both absolutely okay.
