Has anyone had their wisdom teeth out and NOT got dry socket?

Clues in the title really. Having my lower two out next week and everyone I tell has had an experience with dry socket!

Absolute worst fear. Has anyone had them out, followed the aftercare advice and they've been fine?!

Both my children. They followed the instructions exactly and were fine - wasn't even that bad they both said.

Lower right impacted cut out in pieces. Not problems, just impressive brusing.

Me, not painful (the extraction) and no problems. I did need antibiotics and had to wait to have it out due to an infection- now that did hurt!
Had mine out years ago- everyone seems to get dry socket these days.

I was the same , I has all 4 out under GA , waiting for the infection to go down with 2 lots of antibiotics was so painful .
But like pp I followed the advice of the dentist and while it took longer than expected for the swelling to go down I had no problem with dry sockets

Have had 2 out and never had dry socket. Not saying it didn’t hurt once anaesthetic wore off but nothing a couple of paracetamol couldn’t help. I was told that dry socket is much more common in people who smoke. No idea if it’s true.

radishpatch · 02/05/2024 19:36

I've had them all out, and never had dry socket! Just follow the aftercare advice you're given!

I have had wisdom teeth and other teeth out and never had dry socket. I did recently have a weird issue with the clot not forming properly in one site (the opposite of dry socket in that I got a huge clot the size of a blueberry which had to be removed to allow the normal sized clot to form - not sore, just odd, and once the giant clot was removed the normal clot formed and it's healing fine). It's partly luck but also following the aftercare instructions very carefully! Good luck.

I had two out and actually had a Chinese that night - everyone was questioning whether they actually did anything 🙃

Abracadabra1 · 02/05/2024 20:03

I had all 4 out, no problems afterwards

Dreamycinemascape · 02/05/2024 20:08

Yes I had one of my lower wisdom teeth out 3 or 4 months ago and had no dry socket.

My dentist gave me the following advice which I followed and I think it helped:

  • your mouth will be bloody after the procedure but don't spit the blood out or rinse your mouth for a full 2 days. That includes no teeth brushing.
  • don't spit anything out of your mouth for a week after the procedure
  • sip fluids slowly. Don't use a straw as that creates a vacuum which can dislodge the clot.
  • salt water gargle every day 2 days post procedure. Instead of gargling though I let the water drift around my mouth by turning my head one way then the other. Then let the water fall out of your mouth instead of spitting it out.

Hope that helps and good luck

Mine was fine. It was painful though afterwards you need to keep topped up with painkillers. Don't wait until you are in pain use them before it gets bad. Use ice packs.
Take it easy and allow yourself plenty of time to recover.

If you smoke your almost guaranteed to get dry socket. If you don't and follow the advice of the dentist then you should be ok. It's never 100% you won't but by following the advice of the dentist it does reduce the chance.

Absolutely untrue. You're more likely.

You're guaranteed nothing.

Don't scaremonger. Follow any aftercare and you should be fine.

Meadowfinch · 03/05/2024 06:39

I've had all mine removed and not had an issue. I had to google 'dry socket'.

Nannyfannybanny · 03/05/2024 07:20

I followed the post op procedures to the letter, but I didn't bleed at all after extractions, that was the problem. The last one was a Maxfax surgeon.I knew friends on morphine after a dry socket!

nothingsforgotten · 03/05/2024 07:46

I had one taken out 47 years ago. I didn't even know what dry socket was back then, and had no problems.

I agree. My exDH had some taken out years ago and he had been a smoker for years. No dry socket.

Desperada68 · 03/05/2024 07:49

It was a good few years ago now but I followed the advice and was fine.

Jux · 03/05/2024 15:23

I had all four out many years ago. My mum advised gargling with salty water to keep the sockets clean and hope that the anti-germ properties did their job. She made the first gargle, so much salt! Don't drink it and try not to swallow it while you're gargling!

I got dry socket in one only, apparently it was a very troubling one to get out too so that may be why. The other three were fine,

Nannyfannybanny · 03/05/2024 16:09

Don't gargle with salt water, you don't want to cause a vortex and pressure, just carefully rinse your mouth with it!

Gcsunnyside23 · 03/05/2024 16:44

Me! I've had two out with no issues with either, back eating as normal the next day and next to no painkillers

Nettleskeins · 03/05/2024 16:53

The first time I had a tooth extracted I went about my daily life as normal (three kids/busy) I then developed a dry socket.
2nd two extractions over next ten years including wisdom tooth I took it incredibly easy for two days. Any shortcuts you can do, do them. NO DRY SOCKET. Rest rest rest.

Incidentally I gave this advice to my sister, and she refused to follow it....oh I have to do x and y...she developed a dry socket and was miserable for days.

It will save you time in the end to convalesce.

embolass · 03/05/2024 17:01

About 30 years ago, got all 4 out over a couple weeks , warm salty mouth rinse 🤢 and no issues

madameparis · 03/05/2024 17:02

I had my top two taken out under a quick local anaesthetic. Took about 20 minutes from entering the hospital to walking out. No problems at all.

I had my bottom two taken out a few years later under general anaesthetic. Again no problem.

newusernamejacket · 03/05/2024 18:50

Does anywhere in the UK do PRP (platelet rich plasma) for wisdom teeth removal? I am in the US now and it's all the thing here recently and it massively reduces the cases of dry socket. They take some of your own blood before they start taking the teeth out, and use that to make the PRP and put it in the hole from the empty tooth, something like that anyway!

Cockapoopoopoo · 03/05/2024 19:08

I had all four out in one go under GA about 5 years ago and never had any problems or dry socket

artfuldodgerjack · 03/05/2024 22:00

Had two bottom wisdom teeth out last year and was petrified of getting a dry socket as had another tooth pulled the year before and had one. Luckily it was fine and they healed quickly.
