Has anyone had their wisdom teeth out and NOT got dry socket?

Clues in the title really. Having my lower two out next week and everyone I tell has had an experience with dry socket!

Absolute worst fear. Has anyone had them out, followed the aftercare advice and they've been fine?!

I needed this thread! I had the two bottom ones done under Ga and it was fine. No dry socket! I now have to have a top one out next week and absolutely petrified because it'll be at the dentist. How is the actual procedure?!

Top ones come out very easily, much less complicated than some lower wisdom teeth.

I've had all 4 of mine out, no problems with the extractions and no dry socket ( was really worried I was going to get it tho!)

CrunchyCarrot · 02/05/2024 09:50

I've had 2 out under local anaesthetic, many years ago at different times, no dry socket, no problems whatsoever. One upper, one lower. I'm having my last one out in a couple of weeks. Not anticipating any problems. Salty hot water is your friend.

I had all four out under GA last year and no problems with dry socket. Dental wise, the surgery was a dream, very little pain, no infection or dry socket. The sickness on the other hand was awful. Didn’t dislodge the socket though!

Was that sickness from the general anaesthetic or painkillers? I've been under before and luckily don't seem to be too affected by medication like that so fingers crossed 🤞

Glad they healed well though :)

Had 3 out, only one got dry socket, unfortunately that was the lower one (upper two were fine, 4th still ok in situ)

CeeceeBloomingdale · 02/05/2024 10:12

Two out without issues

Zephyry · 02/05/2024 10:14

Had them all our under general, I did get an infection and the pain was awful, but it wasn't dry socket and after infection sorted they healed fine. Good luck

Spidey66 · 02/05/2024 10:15

I had bottom ones out by GA 30 years ago. A bit sore for a few days but no major issues and definitely no dry socket.

mibosh · 02/05/2024 10:16

just be sure to rinse with salt water often or whatever their suggested thing is!

ReallyUAreAnElegantChap · 02/05/2024 10:16

Dont suck on chocolate because you're too sore to chew it!! I got dry socket from that after extraction. My dd had 3 wisdom teeth out and no dry socket!!

IF you do get dry socket, keep on top of pain meds and get back to dentist asap for the clove mesh they put in the wound. It can be uncomfortable while they put it in, but there is instant relief from it

romdowa · 02/05/2024 10:17

I had my top 2 out under ga, wasn't always the best at following the after care , I smoked as well and I was fine or just lucky

edgeware · 02/05/2024 10:18

I have had three out and don’t even know what dry socket is!

follygirl · 02/05/2024 10:19

I just had 2 removed a fortnight ago.
I was really careful about not using a straw and not eating food with 'bits in' and I've had no problems whatsoever. I had the procedure Friday morning and only needed nurofen for 24 hours, I honestly had no pain or swelling.
I was really stressed about it beforehand but honestly it eased fine.

CandiedPrincess · 02/05/2024 10:19

Not wisdom teeth but I've had two massive molars out and not had dry socket either time. I was so careful with aftercare though! Don't dislodge those clots!

Fluffywigg · 02/05/2024 10:20

Had all of mine out and no problems.

NoraLuka · 02/05/2024 10:21

Adding to everyone who said it was fine. Didn’t hurt at all when the extraction was actually being done, was a bit sore once the anaesthetic wore off but only 2 or 3 out of 10 in terms of pain and healed without any issues. Also got the afternoon off work because everyone was shocked that I was thinking of coming back in after going to the dentist!

MadameameBeans · 02/05/2024 10:21

I've had two out and no problem either time
Might have just been lucky, but dry socket isn't inevitable.

NotReadyForAutumnYet · 02/05/2024 10:22

Good luck OP. I had mine out, no problems. It was also much less painful than I'd been expecting.

OldTinHat · 02/05/2024 10:33

I had all four out under GA and never had dry socket.

lilyflower1803 · 02/05/2024 11:52

Thanks to everyone who has responded, has made me feel a lot better!

I had all 4 taken out, under GA, about 15 years ago. Apart from a swollen face for a couple of days had no problems.

I just carried on as normal as wasn't given any aftercare instructions and was in blissful ignorance about dry socket.

Secretsquirrelsunite · 02/05/2024 12:07

2 wisdom, 4 molars under LA. No dry socket, I followed the guidelines carefully.

I think it was a mix of GA, antibiotics and not being able to eat the dry crispy/crunchy carby foods which usually help settle my stomach. And I have a really weak stomach generally!

RampantIvy · 02/05/2024 12:10

I had all 4 taken out at 21 with no problem. DD had one removed last year, and it was a tricky extraction, but she didn't get it either.
