Nasty cold virus

Anyone else got a nasty cold/cough virus which comes and goes and seems especially cling on type?

Had this for about a week. Feel like you’re getting better then bam no. Not Covid. Tested a few times.

I've had wine to get to sleep some nights. It sort of helps. Otherwise I'm awake every 40 minutes but it's also easier to cough up the crap if I don't sleep too long at a time. So fed up and only on day 16 which is nothing compared to some of you

Franticbutterfly · 13/02/2024 19:50

Yep. I feel really rough and stayed off work today.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/02/2024 21:50

I can usually get through these especially wfh with lemsip max but am considering day and night nurse now. I hate night nurse as it knocks me out!

I got better and mine has come back as well. It’s very odd - I was better for about a week, then my sore throat returned, now I’m coughing again and my voice keeps going hoarse. I also feel nauseous again.

Oh no don't say this! I've literally started to feel better this week bar Monday and Tuesday. Monday or Tuesday I saw the doctor - forget which day!

This week it's literally been a day by day thing - one day I feel better and less worse. Today is the first day I've been able to work without Lemsip Max.

Plus, I've just come off HRT a week ago, have switched medication for overactive bladder so am up and down a few times in the night (overactive bladder due to faster metabolism due to Levothyroxine!), so have had to cope with that and maybe slight menopause symptoms returning but hope not!

Thank god I never had a bad cough or cold, just slight - but have had all the other symptoms including bad sinus pain which is now better. My best friend and NDN has a horrendous cough, is being signed off work for 7 days and for next week, she's rarely ill! We didn't catch this off each other though. And definitely not Covid - I tested on Monday just in case and also Tuesday.

DM is finally recovered and so is stepdad from this but it took antibiotics for DM to recover.

I am coming to the end of week 4. I feel so tired…does anyone have any tips of any supplements that have helped to revive them?

OK. Depending on age. Ensure you get a daily multi vitamin. I swear by them. I've been taking my DNephew's gummies which he left here too! Also take a probiotic like Yakult or Danone or Kefir to reset your gut balance. Vitamin C and Zinc - I like the fizzy drink ones. Iron maybe - floradix. Also Echinacea helps a lot.

And look into something like a tonic - think this contains iron.

And have a really good diet - lots of protein, carbs, fruit and veg for the next few months.

Porridge and blackcurrants/blackberries is very good as the latter contains zinc naturally. Plus an orange a day too.

Change pillow nightly. And use lots of antibac stuff but not too much as you want to reboot your immune system and reset it.

I've been taking vitamin D, B12, Berocca, Rheal Balance Tonic and Naturya Green Superblend.

Summerx · 15/02/2024 16:54

I'm off to the doctors in the morning so hoping they will be able to help, I've had roughly two weeks where I've felt ok since early October 😢

Cherryana · 15/02/2024 17:23

Thank you @Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain and @Summerx. I hope the doctors can give you something to get you on the mend.

Can I just say if you are worried about yourself or your family member see a doctor. My DS was recently hospitalised with pneumonia after a couple of weeks of coughing and being generally unwell. It came on very quickly.

Echoing what @DrCoconut says and @Summerx it isn’t to be sick since October.

I got bronchitis years ago and was then diagnosed with asthma, I was approx 25 at the time. I’d always got flu most years and head colds in my early to mid teens. Once I was diagnosed I didn’t get flu every year or if I did it was a bad cold.

These viruses can easily develop into pneumonia or worse if you don’t look after yourself. A colleague had a chest infection and this virus recently.

Especially be careful if you smoke. Eg stop. DM and much younger friends have got pleurisy in the past and DM had bronchitis every year til she was 30 when she stopped for good as she was pregnant with me.

I've heard of a few people being diagnosed with pneumonia recently, it did spur me on to make an appointment I must admit.

Summerx · 16/02/2024 14:17

So I saw the doctor this morning, I've been prescribed antibiotics and a nasal spray. Also been referred for blood tests, a chest X-ray and a lung function test. She was very thorough!

Oh thank goodness for that! You must be relived!

My doctor was very thorough and luckily it’s got better!

Hope you feel better soon.

What is the exhaustion level people are feeling with this? I was already dealing with post viral fatigue from Covid and constant back to back viruses the last 12 months. But this one has set my exhaustion at a new low. I’m about 10 days after being hospitalised cause I couldn’t move and been unable to leave house as so shattered. Have a 2yo who’s beautiful but a goddamned tornado and I’m aching constantly, feeling panicky cause I’m really not functioning well.

i’m quite lucky as no DC and no partner at the moment so only myself and the caf to please!

But yes, exhaustion both with this virus and after it seems to be a big theme there.

Go back to your doctor if you’re still not feeling right. I know of 2 people personally who’ve got a chest infection due to this and 1 friend as of last night who’s now in hospital with pneumonia. It’s an evil evil virus which can turn nasty easily.

I’m fine apart from the exhaustion. I work in healthcare so know the signs etc of pneumonia and I don’t really have any of the symptoms of a secondary infection bar the fatigue and aches. Cough and congestion are gone, all obs are totally fine and normal, just bone crushing fatigue, a achiness and struggling to even move right now. All other symptoms have abated though but thanks for your advice. It’s reassuring that maybe it’s part of this. For god sake I only had Covid over Xmas and hadn’t recovered from that even!!! It started as a really heavy heavy cold and then got worse. I dunno what it is but it’s evil.

Ok so a week or so from getting rid of this and it’s returned with a vengeance only proper sinus pain, coloured phlegm and a lovely nasty cough and sneezing. I’m supposed to go in for a GA operation next Friday! Help! My hairdresser who I saw (before I saw the coloured phlegm) yesterday said her youngest son has got it twice and been so ill he’s not even touching his PlayStation! That’s how she knows he’s ill.

Exactly the same as me, I thought I was on the up for a week then got so much greeny yellow coloured snot/phlegm, sinus pain, popping ears. I presumed it was working it’s way out but I’ve lost count of the weeks now. Had all tests done and GP just insisting it’s viral. In agony this weekend as I’ve pulled a muscle coughing so now I can’t even cough properly. Don’t want to think about how much money I’ve spent at the pharmacy but nothing works!
