Nasty cold virus

Anyone else got a nasty cold/cough virus which comes and goes and seems especially cling on type?

Had this for about a week. Feel like you’re getting better then bam no. Not Covid. Tested a few times.

Swear to god this is whooping cough.

We've all come down with it here and listening to my family sucking in a gasping breath in between hacking coughs.

Has anyone got snot coming through the roof of mouth as well as coughing it up? Believe it or not this is better as I'm not being sick. Although everything seems to taste of bogies.Envy

I think DM has this but she has other conditions.

Think I am finally better enough to return to work today!

Hope you all feel better soon.

Just updating you all on this. Back to work Wednesday and yesterday. Wednesday felt much better but yesterday got gradually worse. Now off again as feel awful. Not much congestion in nose and throat but did have some yesterday. Wish it would disappear.

I’ve lost track of how many days my throat has been so sore 🙁 it’s particularly bad in the night. Can’t keep taking so much ibuprofen it’s not good for our tummies is it? Trouble is paracetamol doesn’t touch the pain.

Into week 7 here…

Gfozzy · 10/02/2024 07:08

On week 3 I believe! It’s exhausting. Started with consistent cough that bubbled when I coughed (gp gave antibiotics) then came the headache, body aches, night sweats, fatigue etc muddled through until I became very tachycardic and called 111 they told me to go to hospital. Infection was taking over my body but chest xray was clear, oxygen sats great and nothing heard but infection markers high. Given new antibiotics and sent away. 2 days later hubby rings 111 again as I couldn’t physically move, they send an ambulance. Extremely tachycardic and the hospital is FULL of it! For those saying Covid or flu (it’s not. Swabbed twice for flu and Covid on both hospital trips)
this virus is evil and putting lots of people in a very poorly state. It’s not just viral as it’s turning bacterial and making people worse.

now just left with stupid cough that keeps me awake all night and makes me sick throughout the day (it’s a productive cough) but chest xray clear etc. it’s miserable and I’m sending lots of love to those unwell

OMG that is horrendous you poor thing! I’ve had both flu and Covid jabs last year but still got Covid last year.

I’m changing medication for an overactive bladder as of last Monday and stopped HRT from last Weds as have womb ovaries scan emergency booked in. So whilst bladder gets used to new meds I’m up and down in night or it could be this virus! Plus waiting for non HRT symptoms to kick in.

Feel bit better but this virus is very up and down. A friend of mine who is a stroke recoverer and rarely gets sick got this but not from me… she’s saying as am I, no vitamin c zinc and echinacea is helping it as it usually does!

Thanks for the heads up as to it not being viral but can turn bacterial.

As I said I earlier it reminds me of head colds I had as a teenager but without lurid coloured phlegm and snot! But at least after a week with that you felt much better and no antibiotics needed!

Symptoms seem to vary from person to person my DP’s who I got this off after visiting them (had no idea stepdad unwell) have the cold cough thing far worse than me. I have nasty sinus pain though. Plus aches temperature etc. and appetite way down.

Two months now of it coming and going.

Attictroll · 11/02/2024 10:18

Does anyone else think this is related to whooping cough...I didn't whoop but my cough was very distinct and wc is sometimes called to 100 day cough

Gfozzy · 11/02/2024 14:33

I do think it could possibly be related. I don’t whoop but I struggle to catch my breath when coughing and it’s made me quite physically sick. The cough is ever changing though. One day it’s dry the next it’s productive and it’s been going on 3 and a half weeks ish I believe

Backinthedress · 11/02/2024 22:48

Anyone else struggling to stay...um... in full control of their bodily functions when coughing violently?

citrusfruit1 · 12/02/2024 06:26

Apart from the length of time, I don’t think it quite fits the WC profile for me. The last week or two I’ve had a cough, but also been really full of snot and felt unwell, which I don’t think you do with WC. I’ve now managed to pull a muscle in my back so it’s absolute agony when I cough or even blow my nose. And yes - my pelvic floors have taken a real hit too!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/02/2024 06:31

Update from me. My virus has morphed from virus into a more manageable cold and now sniffy but luckily no cough. Or very little cough.

It really is a cling on though… thought I was better Saturday but yesterday when in Tescos it returned with a vengeance mid afternoon! At least with the cold more dominant I can just survive on lemsip max. Certainly drains you though!

DM is on the last day of her antibiotics but still feels rough and won’t laugh in case she coughs. I told her to go back to the doctor if still bad as she’s been hospitalised for pneumonia and then got sepsis but a few years ago now. She has a weak chest but so do I.

Adult DD ill since mid December with recurring cough and cold like symptoms. Had doctors appointment 2 weeks ago and prescribed antibiotics and steroids. It seems to have worked.

hattie43 · 12/02/2024 06:49

I'm on week 3 of this awful productive cough . The last couple of days I thought I was on the up but it's now come back with a vengeance, rattling , loads of mucus, I will have to bother the DR I think as normal over the counter stuff is not having an inroad into this .
Never been ill like this before .

Gfozzy · 12/02/2024 07:32

Well 2 lots of antibiotics, chest xray and I’m still choking my guts up all day. Went from a productive cough to a dry cough and now back to a productive cough. 4 weeks so far! Body aches still present and feel weak and rough. Like I’ve said before flu and covid swabs negative twice in hospital

I’m going to go back later in the week and beg for something. Like a PP said paracetamol etc is just not touching it and really doesn’t seem to be improving. Again like someone else said I seem to see a mild improvement, think it’s on its way out and then back with a bang. I’ve learnt not to get my hopes up anymore.

Me. It's the worst part of it for me.

Same. I made the sofa soggy last night and it was the final straw. I just cried and cried.

Me too, it's very disconcerting and I hope it doesn't linger. I'm on week 3, nasty cough, very snotty, knackered

ThelastRolo20 · 12/02/2024 18:47

I'm also entering week 3, productive cough but I'm coughing so much I'm retching. I had a temp for 3 days last week and now it's back 😔 also think I'm going to have to call the doctor tomorrow

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/02/2024 16:47

Update for me, saw doctor today who was lovely and checked me all over to ensure it wasn’t bacterial but viral (checked my ears for wax etc) but declared it’s just a virus and I need to rest.

So I’m doing that.

Its an absolute killer though. I’m almost tempted to do my 20s trick of getting drunk and seeing if that works. Or turning to god and praying!

OP posts:
Gfozzy · 13/02/2024 17:26

I haven’t drunk alcohol for 5 years and I’m considering having a bottle of wine so I can finally get some sleep!!

was feeling better but now taking a backwards turn 😢

citrusfruit1 · 13/02/2024 18:31

Glad to hear you had a good experience with the docs! I also went today and they said the same, just viral and to rest. But she did give a steroid nasal spray so here’s hoping that shifts some of the mucous.
