Hand hold while I wait for ambulance for daughter

Currently waiting for an ambulance for my daughter. Been sent as category 3. She's not been right for a few days now, not eating, not drinking, just laying slumped on her bed. This morning she collapsed in the bathroom and went really pale.

She has a learning disability and complex mental health problems so she can't tell me what is wrong as she doesn't verbally communicate when she feels unwell.

She was in hospital a couple of weeks back due to an infection (see previous threads) so I hope it's nothing to do with that.

I'm so worried, I feel sick.

Cat 3 is up to 10hrs! Is there no way you can get her there yourself with friends/family.

She's stated multiple times that she can't.

I think you should have used a taxi so see why paramedic said that . I have a disabled child myself but ambulances shouldn't be used in this case scenario

It was 111 that sent one out.

How exactly do you suggest OP could have used a taxi in the circumstances she has described where she would not be able to get her 20 year old ill child out of the house? And why do you think you know better than the ambulance service who assigned the ambulance?

He said, "can't do anything about constipation here". Then he said they would essentially just be a taxi service. I nearly started crying

He needs to get more education.
Constipation can lead to more serious things like sepsis.
Not saying this is what your dd has but that comment needs reporting

Exactly! It can actually lead to death if severe enough.

So grateful for all the supportive posts. We are in the ED now.

Good luck op hope they can get her sorted quickly.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 27/01/2024 17:03

Dear God, some of the posts on this thread! I have a 12yo DD with a learning disability who suffers with severe constipation so you have my sympathy. Ignore the paramedic. Sending a hug to you both.

Clarabell77 · 27/01/2024 17:13

I hope your daughter is okay.

HuntingForChicken · 27/01/2024 17:17

Some people have no idea how disabilities can affect your ability to function in the way other people take for granted. Hope she gets the treatment she needs and recovers quickly.

Glad you made it to the hospital! Thinking of you and your daughter and hoping she’s on the mend soon Flowers

Exactly! I've seen someone vomiting up their own poo from severe constipation and then needing emergency surgery.

Anewuser · 27/01/2024 17:22

This is because some people think constipation just means you can’t poo. They have no idea how it can affect someone with disabilities.

Hopefully the hospital will be a little more understanding.

good luck

Thank you. Has your daughter ever had to be treated in hospital for it?

I think he means there is nothing the paramedic can do, which I imagine is true as its a hospital job. Thus being a taxi service to the hospital.

HuntingForChicken · 27/01/2024 17:39

@Blondebutnotlegally taxis don’t tend to come two paramedics prepared to stretcher a disabled patient into the back of their cab though does it?

I agree. But, they didn't even bother helping me get her out. Thankfully she cooperated and managed to walk down the stairs with me supporting her but they had just left me to it and gone to the ambulance. So I had 2 backpacks, her blanket in addition to trying to help her walk.

Well she didn't need that. As seen in recent update

quirkychick · 27/01/2024 17:48

Best of luck @StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance that was us last week. My dd has complex needs, asthma and constipation. Luckily, our paramedics were fab, as were the ED. It turned out she had tonsillitis and we had antibiotics. Fingers crossed you get the help you need quickly.

StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance · 27/01/2024 17:53

@Blondebutnotlegally I didn't have much choice really as they had already pissed off to the ambulance. Thankfully she cooperated but it's not a given due to her mental health issues. She has had to be force-ably taken out before.

I'd be inclined to put in a complaint about the paramedics. I completely get the system is broken but to tell you they're just being a taxi service, and then not even assist you with your daughter is appalling.

I hope she is on the mend soon.

starsparkle08 · 27/01/2024 17:57

@Flamme the ambulance service attend many calls that don’t fit their criteria . I’m not saying it’s not hard for the poster as it will be but it really wasn’t fitting the criteria for an ambulance

Why did 111 send one then? And then the ambulance service themselves said she needed one when they called me?

@dauphinose

paramedics are people at the end of the day - someone’s dad / mum etc they are not robots . It’s a highly pressured job . They maybe could have handled it better but going from a highly traumatic scene to then someone who could have paid for a taxi must be frustrating

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 27/01/2024 18:00

Ignore the ignorant paramedic. My son when he was a baby was having what we found out to be myoclonic convulsions and high temp. GP called ambulance and paramedic was an absolute horror. That was until he put a heart monitor on him and realised he was poorly. Still waiting on an apology. Hope your girl gets seen soon x
