Hand hold while I wait for ambulance for daughter

Currently waiting for an ambulance for my daughter. Been sent as category 3. She's not been right for a few days now, not eating, not drinking, just laying slumped on her bed. This morning she collapsed in the bathroom and went really pale.

She has a learning disability and complex mental health problems so she can't tell me what is wrong as she doesn't verbally communicate when she feels unwell.

She was in hospital a couple of weeks back due to an infection (see previous threads) so I hope it's nothing to do with that.

I'm so worried, I feel sick.

I am ambulance crew. We’re at breaking point and 111 sending ambulances isn’t helping ! In my trust we’ve declared a critical incident so we’ve stopped attending cat 3 calls and only concentrating on clearing cat 1s & 2s. Therefore it’s hugely frustrating to attend calls that aren’t acutely life threatening . I understand how difficult it can be with a child with LD but it’s not really an ambulance issue and it’s an abuse of the system whilst adding to the already broken system

Also just because an ambulance conveys doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a bed and more often than not atm people are put in the waiting room as no beds available!

im sorry the ambulance crew didn’t assist you, they should of done as I say we’re so deflated and super pissed off with going to non life threatening jobs that don’t really need us

Flossieskeeper · 27/01/2024 18:27

I’m sorry you have had to deal with arsey comments from paramedics. Most of them are brilliant but there are a few who don’t recognise severe illness when they see it and think they know better. I’ve had to admit people over the years and had to deal with a few arsey paramedics so you have my full sympathy.

I hope dd gets diagnose and sorted out soon.

starsparkle08 · 27/01/2024 18:27

@Bluelightbaby Thankyou for all you do

StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance · 27/01/2024 18:29

@Bluelightbaby ok so what do you suggest? She would not use a taxi due to her mental health problems. She needed medical care. She's been fobbed off by GP since Thursday.

So if I can't get her in a taxi and I shouldn't have called an ambulance, do I just let her die in her bed from dehydration and possible severe constipation which can be life threatening?

You guys saved my life when I had a cardiac arrest in an ambulance I will be forever greatful❤️❤️❤️

starsparkle08 · 27/01/2024 18:33

@StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance

did the ambulance staff man handle and restrain her ? I just think you could have tried a taxi .

Cornettoninja · 27/01/2024 18:34

@StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance Don’t be bullied down by people here. You’re right, there’s literally nothing between taxi and ambulance for people who need medical help but not necessarily any kind of on-scene treatment/stabilising. It’s frustrating for paramedics but it’s not a situation created by or the fault of people who need assistance. You’ve done the best and only thing you could do in the situation.

I hope your dd is relatively settled and will be on her way back to health soon.

StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance · 27/01/2024 18:18

Doctor just examined her and she is going to be admitted.

I'm also not going to feel guilty using an ambulance as I had no other means to get her here and it was recommended by numerous professionals who know my daughter.

Glad you are getting the support you and your dd need.
Ignore the people on here who have no idea what it is like to look after an adult dd/ds with extra needs. They clearly have no idea. You did the right thing.

Silvers11 · 27/01/2024 18:37

@StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance So sorry, so many people giving you a hard time here. You were TOLD that your daughter needed to go to A & E - and 111 called the ambulance. So little understanding of the issues with disabilities.

I hope she is OK. Glad they are going to admit her: You did the right thing

StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance · 27/01/2024 18:37

Her oxygen is 92. I'm scared

Cornettoninja · 27/01/2024 18:37

@Bluelightbaby the OP had been told and knew her dd was a category 3. The ambulance was dispatched anyway off the back of information she gave them.

Your comments shouldn’t really be directed at @StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance but the chain that made the decision to dispatch the ambulance in the first place.

Didn't the paramedics or triage nurse check this already why are they only checking randomly now

Her oxygen is 92. I'm scared

She's in the right place at least now. So sorry you are going through this

Bluelightbaby · 27/01/2024 18:40

I think I would attempt to work with her regularly at using taxis so that when an emergency arises it’s not an abnormal situation for her. The fact that you were able to get her to the ambulance without assistance just shows it’s possible. as there might be times (like in my trust atm) where an ambulance won’t be sent due to the low priority of the call.

im sad the crew didn’t help you though as despite how pissed pff they maybe, that’s not acceptable, without being there though I can’t comment on what their thinking around the situation was

Americano75 · 27/01/2024 18:41

If I was told that my child needed an ambulance, I'd wait for the fucking ambulance. These particular paramedics had a shocking attitude, especially as their patient is vulnerable. What an unprofessional way to behave.

I really hope your daughter is on the mend soon, for your sake as much as hers.

Cornettoninja · 27/01/2024 18:42

@StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance oxygen of 92 isn’t great but she’s absolutely in the right place to deal with it. It does sound like there’s a deeper infection going on. I’m not a hcp so could be talking out my backside but it’s possible that she could have concurrent issues (maybe constipation and a chest infection) going on that need resolving.

Remember, you’re where you need to be. You’re not dealing this out of reach of the hospital and what that makes available to her.

Bluelightbaby · 27/01/2024 18:42

92 is the lower end of normal please don’t worry

This. Absolutely this.

The whining bullies need to fuck off rather than distress OP further. Shameful behaviour.

AmserGwely · 27/01/2024 15:55

There are 3 main missed causes of serious illness jin people with a learning disability/complex needs.

Constipation
Dehydration
Aspiration

Make sure you ask them to investigate all three- tho it sounds as though the Constipation and Dehydration are the issue here.

Also ask for the learning disability liason nurse, if they work weekends.

Quoting this for the ignorant on this thread.

It’s no wonder people with LD die so young - and of preventable causes - with attitudes like this in society.

@StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance she’s in the right place and will be getting help now. 💐

If someone clearly needs to be in hospital and there is no way to get them there other than by ambulance, what do you suggest should happen?

Potentialmadcatlady · 27/01/2024 18:43

So much judgement and so little support on this post when the OP clearly said she needed a hand hold.

I’m with this as well OP, sorry.

It means ambulances aren’t available for cat 1s which I am personally and painfully aware of.

Im glad your daughter is being treated but can’t agree with your need for an ambulance.

Bluelightbaby · 27/01/2024 18:46

Yes ambulance will be sent but could be up to a 12hr wait sadly. I think the non emergency ambulances (PTS) need to do more the help the situation

this is why I state the system is broken
