Hand hold while I wait for ambulance for daughter

Currently waiting for an ambulance for my daughter. Been sent as category 3. She's not been right for a few days now, not eating, not drinking, just laying slumped on her bed. This morning she collapsed in the bathroom and went really pale.

She has a learning disability and complex mental health problems so she can't tell me what is wrong as she doesn't verbally communicate when she feels unwell.

She was in hospital a couple of weeks back due to an infection (see previous threads) so I hope it's nothing to do with that.

I'm so worried, I feel sick.

Her LD nurse just called me and said she is going to try and get in touch with the district nursing team to see if they can come out in the meantime.

That sounds encouraging. I was going to ask if there was an LD nurse you could contact, is she based at the hospital and able to support you on admission?

Willmafrockfit · 27/01/2024 15:00

so glad your LD nurse is involved

Willmafrockfit · 27/01/2024 15:01

can you massage her stomach, do bicycle movements with her legs,
how does she self soothe?

StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance · 27/01/2024 14:21

@KimKardassion I thought you were telling me to piss off then 🫣 lol

Oh my goodness no! I was talking to the rude person!

Numberfish · 27/01/2024 15:02

Hand hold squeeze x

The not drinking would probably cause a faint, particularly common if she has constipation too so try not to worry more than normal amounts! Mine nearly faints nearly every time she stands unless she drinks. Get some rest before you get in ambulance and pack food drinks distractions eye mask ear plugs and that blanket. Coats can be used as pillows.

She’s got an amazing, responsive mum x

Just had another call from ambulance service. This must be a new thing where they call you and keep you updated, it's really good. The lady on the phone said it sounds like she definitely needs to go into hospital to find out what is going on. She said ambulance could be another hour or two.

Cat 3 is up to 10hrs! Is there no way you can get her there yourself with friends/family.

Yousay55 · 27/01/2024 15:21

That sounds so hard. You have my sympathy. I hope goes well at the hospital. 💐

What possesses people to come onto threads like this and claim the OP shouldn't be posting? It's totally unhelpful, it's nasty, it contributes nothing, and if anything it shows up the person who posts the message.

Totally agree. Bizarre.
OP thinking of you and your daughter Flowers

The OP has already explained that she can't.

AmserGwely · 27/01/2024 15:55

There are 3 main missed causes of serious illness jin people with a learning disability/complex needs.

Constipation
Dehydration
Aspiration

Make sure you ask them to investigate all three- tho it sounds as though the Constipation and Dehydration are the issue here.

Also ask for the learning disability liason nurse, if they work weekends.

Anewuser · 27/01/2024 16:06

Hand hold from me.

My son has complex needs and we’ve been where you are too many times.

If she is severely constipated she may feel nauseous as food has nowhere to go except back up. She won’t want to drink either.

As others have said, the NHS has very poor form with regard to learning disabilities so keep fighting her corner.

I know you want her to be left somewhere quiet but consider ringing 111 to ask for OOH GP in the meantime. If nothing else they may hurry up the ambulance.

StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance · 27/01/2024 16:12

I'll be able to catch up on the posts soon. In the ambulance now. Paramedic made me feel like I was being a nuisance. They weren't going to take her.

So glad you’re on your way. Well done for advocating for your daughter.

LakieLady · 27/01/2024 16:15

Glad you're on your way to hospital, but disgraceful that they didn't want to take you!

Don't take any notice of them - fight your corner. They don't know her, you do. I hope your dd is feeling better soon.

He said, "can't do anything about constipation here". Then he said they would essentially just be a taxi service. I nearly started crying

What an asshole who is clearly in the wrong job! I hope your daughter gets better care at the hospital. Keep advocating for her.

Gazelda · 27/01/2024 16:21

Ignore the paramedic idiot. You know your daughter and when she needs medical attention. I hope she is seen quickly when you arrive and that she is soon made more comfortable.

Lovemusic82 · 27/01/2024 16:25

Glad you are on your way, ignore the paramedic.

I have a dd (18) with complex needs and it’s hard to get other people/professionals to understand. It’s also very stressful when your child can’t tell you what’s wrong.

starsparkle08 · 27/01/2024 16:32

I think you should have used a taxi so see why paramedic said that . I have a disabled child myself but ambulances shouldn't be used in this case scenario

Einevinefine · 27/01/2024 16:35

Also adding another hand hold.

I hope the hospital staff will see your DD very quickly and assess the underlying cause.

Thinking of you both

Yalta · 27/01/2024 16:36

He needs to get more education.
Constipation can lead to more serious things like sepsis.
Not saying this is what your dd has but that comment needs reporting

TigerJoy · 27/01/2024 16:37

Handhold from me.

Ignore the paramedic, you did the right thing (and you know it). So unfair when you're already stressed.

I hope you'll be seen quickly and I also hope you can relax now as your DD will be seen and taken care of. Do keep us updated on how she is doing xxx
