Time for a new thread already!

Welcome to the thread, the purpose of this is to give anyone who is having any trouble with their drinking, a safe place to come and post about it honestly and without judgement.

There are many of us that use the thread for support and encouragement: some in recovery, others just needing a place to share about their worries. It's been going on in one form of another for a while now and has helped many people.

Thank you to all of those who have kept it going thus far, and welcome to anyone who has decided the time has come to ask for help.

Everybody's welcome, no matter what stage your drinking is at.

Jump right in, the water's fine

Blimey, mid-May, that'd be too much for me at the moment. Good on you.

I know one test of alcohol dependence is whether you can comfortably have a month off. For me that would be extremely difficult (therefore I have a problem!).

I think I need to find an activity to replace the drinking if I'm serious about this, either exercise or something else. Also I find drinking wine over dinner very companiable, and that's something I would/will miss longterm. DH just has one or two small glasses, while I finish the bottle.

dinny · 29/03/2008 12:44

well, I haven't done it yet, have no idea if I'll make it.

know what you mean about wine with dinner - dh drinks as much as me (though if it's not in the house, he won't, iykwim) to him it is simple - just don't buy it in the firat place and then just enjoy it when you go out or whatever.

maybe it is that simple,I don't know.

dinny · 29/03/2008 12:45

actually, he has been getting really annoyed with me saying in the morning "right, no wine tonight" and then texting him in the late pm saying "oh, just pick a bottle, would you?"

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 29/03/2008 12:47

I would have a compulsion to go out and buy some if there was none in the house, and there's an offy at the end of the road.

If you're a distance from the shops, I can see it working. And if you've got more willpower than me!

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 29/03/2008 12:48

oh, I do that all the time! I mean it at 8am, because I don't want to drink first thing in the morning. By mid-afternoon I'm positively looking forward to it.

dinny · 29/03/2008 13:00

yes, same here, Coco

it's like I am a totally different person in the afternoon than the morning, it's horrid!

just trying to keep in my mind the fact that alcohol seems to be making me really enxious and quite moody. at least, I presume it is alcohol doing it. I have also signed up to down your drink and spent some time on it yesterday
and it really helped me think about things more clearly....

dinny · 29/03/2008 13:00

lol ANXIOUS

gerbrajess · 29/03/2008 17:15

Hi Dinny,
I followed your link to Down your Drink and have also signed up. Have to admit it was shocking to see how much I'd drunk in the last week (and I'm not even sure it was 100% accurate!). I was too chicken to go into the health section, too much of an ostrich with my head in the sand at the moment.
I think once I manage to cut down, I'll feel a lot braver about facing up to health issues etc.
We've got friends round tonight who are generally drinkers so I predict I will get p**d again tonight
Hope everyone's well...
Gebrax

jellibabe · 29/03/2008 17:39

Well done Purpleone. Goodluck tonight to everyone who is attempting to increase their sobriety even just by one additional hour.

I want that real life happiness. Not just that 2-3 hour illusion of happiness you think your going to get.

dinny · 29/03/2008 19:06

gerbrajess, oh, well done, it's an excellent site, isn't it?

I went to see my sister and her new baby in hosp this pm, and her dh handed me a sip of ubbly in a plastic cup and I totally forgot my pledge and just drank it, only remembered walking back!!!

still, determined not to let it throw me off course...

glowwormish · 29/03/2008 21:47

Hello is anyone out there.

On my 3rd glass. DH severly stressed and I'm not that far behind.

I read a few posts back about 2 posters working for themselves/own their own business? I think it was Kokoshi and Gerbabras (sorry if I have your names wrong). I always seem to post on here when I'm feeling the effects or dog tired (which is often actually!) I so REALLY need support from other business owners, we have taken such a battering.

Also someone metioned about not going cold turkey if you drink a certain amount. I drink 3 large glasses of wine (250ml at a guess per glass) every night unless I pyschially can't (just can't remmber how to speel it)

Unhappy-how are you?

Read with interest about having a booze free night on Monday. Not sure if I want to join in but maybe it could become a regular feature and everyone log on to give support?

teasle · 29/03/2008 22:06

Hi everyone,

I would just like to re-iterate that if anyone has serious concerns about their level of drinking they really need to go to their GP and/or contact local alcohol support services for advice and information.
Alcoholism is a serious illness/addiction- whatever you want to call it- and its no good just crossing your fingers and hoping things will change.

Anyone who has been around an active alcoholic knows the devastation they can cause to themselves and to other peoples lives.

I really can't stress enough how important it is to seek advice and access services- whatever you can get, to match your problem.

But of course you all know this- its just something that has been on my mind today after seeing someone who is very poorly.

Looks like Monday should be an active night on the thread hopefully then?

expatinscotland · 29/03/2008 23:51

Well, I'm now pregnant and feeling ill so off the sauce.

Have struggled with alcohol dependence, however, and about 7 years ago my drinking spiralled out of control during a divorce - no children at the time.

I actually came to the UK to get away from my old lifestyle because it was killing me.

I was a high-functioning drunk who knew exactly how much I could drink during the week to perform well at my job, but at the weekends I never tried to restrain myself and could easily put down 3 bottles of wine and 2 packs of cigs in a night.

I formed dysfunctional relationships with other high-functioning alcoholics or substance abusers.

paperchain · 29/03/2008 23:53

congrats and well done for ytour abstinance expat

expatinscotland · 29/03/2008 23:54

Even now, I have a scarily high tolerance for wine and beer so have to watch my step when it comes to booze.

Never much of a spirt drinker, but at my worst I kept it close to hand in case I ran out of wine or to get more bang for my buck at the end of the night.

expatinscotland · 29/03/2008 23:54

We're not a small bunch, paperchain.

expatinscotland · 29/03/2008 23:57
