Oopsy and upset

I'm feeling very sorry for myself. I popped to the shop for loo rolls and fell over coming home. I was so embarrassed, people rushed over to help me. I said ah I'm okay, only live round the corner, but my ankle feels very unstable and is so painful, my hands are all mashed up, my knee is grazed through my jeans. Bit worried about my ankle, it feels odd.

I think I just want a hand hold because it hurts so much! I'm really upset.

💐💐💐 oh sweetheart, your shocked, hurt AND had some embarrassment. People on here say go to a walk in centre if there’s one near you (none anywhere near here). If not then ring NHS direct for advice.

OldTinHat · 04/01/2023 17:13

No walks in here and our only hospital is in critical wotsit.

Stupidly sobbing because my ankle is screaming at me. I'm huddled under my coat since I got in, can't stop shaking. How ridiculous am I?!

@Yesthatismychildsigh thank you!

SouperNoodle · 04/01/2023 17:15

You poor thing! Are there any walk in centres out of town that you can travel to?

DietCokeWoman · 04/01/2023 17:17

sit down and elevate it on a stool and put a bag of frozen peas or similar on it to take down any swelling. If pain gets worse in 24 - 48 hours contact your GP - that was the advice given to me by NHS when I hurt my ankle in a fall.
I hope it feels better soon.

Eastereggsboxedupready · 04/01/2023 17:18

Sympathy op. I fell while out walking in Scotland in October.. Pain from a twisted ankle can be 12 weeks! My dc were very restrained and didn't laugh! The pain was telling me Broken but it wasn't. Elevate and ice apparently... I say apparently as I had a week's holiday left to walk!!
Prob why it's still swollen!

nzeire · 04/01/2023 17:19

Elevate and ice! You poor thing!
can you text anyone to come and make you a cup of tea?!

Pixiedust1234 · 04/01/2023 17:22

Get yourself a cup of tea with sugar in it. You are shaking because shock is setting in. Then get a bag of frozen peas, wrapped in a teatowel, on that ankle while its elevated.

Hugs from me too 💕

QueenSmartypants · 04/01/2023 17:22

You're shaking because you're in a bit of shock, poor thing. I had this with a terrible sprained ankle - hurt like hell.

Have a sweet tea to help settle you.

Can you gently examine your ankle?

If you can move it without crepitus (grinding or crunching noises/feelings) then it indicates a sprain. Also if it doesn't look deformed in any way.

Take a look at your toes and toe nails and make sure they're still a healthy colour. If looking like blood flow is compromised then you need a&e.

I imagine it's very swollen.

RICE routine and take ibuprofen and paracetamol if you can. The ibuprofen will help with swelling and the two together make a strong painkiller (space doses 6 hourly instead of 4)

OldTinHat · 04/01/2023 17:31

Thank you, I feel better already reading your messages! Can't stop crying stupidly, my ankle is yelling at me and I have childishly scraped hands and knees.

My ankle is sooo painful, I'm taking all of your advice, thank you. I'm on my own so feel so pathetic. It bloody hurts!

How silly to just want to cry and hurt so much from falling over?! I'm 51 and used to bounce!

OldTinHat · 04/01/2023 17:33

I think I'm also upset about the bag of peas on my elevated ankle which are defrosting because I love peas!

Queenelsarules · 04/01/2023 17:50

How are you feeling now? The ground seems much further away when you fall as an adult doesn't it? I came off my bike in the summer and it felt like slow motion. Is the ice and elevation helping? Have you taken pain relief?

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 04/01/2023 17:54

If you have got pain around your ankle AND you can't weight-bear (walk 4 steps) then I'm afraid you probably need to get it checked over somewhere they can x-ray it. It doesn't mean it's broken necessarily but it meets the criteria for an X-ray.

If it's not broken then don't underestimate the value of taking care of it while it heals. Soft tissue injuries can be the very devil.

MalteserGeezee · 04/01/2023 17:59

Order yourself some crutches from Amazon (handy to have in the house in general) and hope you feel better soon

underneaththeash · 04/01/2023 18:10

OldTinHat · 04/01/2023 17:33

I think I'm also upset about the bag of peas on my elevated ankle which are defrosting because I love peas!

They can go in the fridge afterwards - don;t worry about the peas!

If it still feels the same in the morning, I'd go to A&E then (with a couple of books, ipad and portable charger and some lunch!)

OldTinHat · 04/01/2023 18:25

I can't put any weight on my stupid ankle. It's all wobbly. How stupid is this?! I'm so upset, bah!!!

LightSpeeds · 04/01/2023 18:37

Awwww, poor you. I'm really glad some people stopped to help (although I always find the embarrassment of falling down worse than any pain).

I fell over last year going out to the car -- it really can take hours/days to get over the initial shock/embarrassment and the general scrapes and bruises even when there aren't any serious injuries.

Hope you feel better soon xx

Yesthatismychildsigh · 04/01/2023 21:34

You’re not ridiculous at all! I’d be the same, think more people would than not.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 04/01/2023 21:35

On the plus side you got your loo rolls 😉

OldTinHat · 05/01/2023 10:02

@Yesthatismychildsigh haha, that's made me laugh!

@Lightspeed ouch. Its awful, isn't it? I swear we used to bounce when we were children and fell over!

Couldn't sleep last night, the pain in my ankle is ridiculous. Can't stand even a sheet over it. It's ballooned to impressive proportions and overnight my knee, arm and shoulder have joined in the pity party!

The embarrassment factor has been overtaken by the pain factor, but, what a sight I must have been - a fat 51yr old with a bag of loo rolls flying through the air. I'm sure there must be a dent in the pavement where I landed now! 😂

purpleme12 · 05/01/2023 10:06

It's not silly. I'm was mid 30s and still remember falling over taking my child to school a couple of years ago. I hurt myself but it was more the shock. I got home and cried! And I wasn't expecting to do that!!

Talipesmum · 05/01/2023 10:10

I fell over and scraped my knee like a 6 year old a few years ago, in front of a bunch of 18-20 year old girls / women, who of course were very nice and immediately asked me if I was ok. Obviously my first reaction was to apologise to them. Sorry! Oops! Ow! Sorry! Yes I’m fine! <hobbles away dripping blood as they looked on>.

EBearhug · 05/01/2023 10:13

It's difficult to tell a bad sprain from a break without an x-ray. A sprain can take longer to heal, but if it's broken, it should be properly set.

Do take care - I sprained my ankle badly in my 20s, and it still aches when I get tired now I'm 50.

Mabelface · 05/01/2023 10:22

You need an x- Ray, lovely. Only way to know if it's broken or sprained.

Ahhhhhbisto · 05/01/2023 10:30

Hope you are feeling better this morning. The shame when things like this happen is very real and intense, but only for you. Flowers

Really should get that ankle looked at OP.
