i thought if they suspected something bad, they had to do breast assessment in two weeks. Eight weeks I think is a good sign.

rosybud · 25/01/2008 15:56

shib, i had a breast lump removed at 15, it turned out to be a fibroadenoma which is a benign lump.
My mum had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer so they very quickly whipped me in for surgery but i don't think there was any real concern that mine was sinister.
It is very common and is probably all linked in with breast development and puberty.
Wishing you luck with your dd, try not to worry too much.
Let us know how you get on.

MrsWobble · 25/01/2008 16:02

my best friend had this at 14. it was removed no problem. it recurred again at 17 and again in her early 20's. still no problem following removal. she is fit and healthy and happy. try not to worry.

stickybean · 25/01/2008 18:45

Hi there,

I have had one at about 17, which went away on its own. And another at 21, which felt quite small but when scanned was deeper that it felt from the outside and almost a double lump.
I had the second one removed in day surgery, it was a totally benign lump, nothing at all to worry about.
On the day i had the surgery, all the other people on the ward were young women as well, teens, early 20s. I think i was the oldest.

Do try not to worry, hard as it is!
Sending good vibes.

(PS, it's great that she told you, i took months to tell my mum, i'm not even sure why. I think on some level i knew it wasnt serious, and didnt want to open the floodgates. I only told her because my boyfriend (now husband)threatend to tell her for me can't believe what an idiot i was.

Good luck

Shiboriamplehips · 25/01/2008 19:21

thanks,it feels like the latest in a long line of calamities, trying to be pragmatic, but not succeeding too well

I had a fibroadenoma (completely benign) at 18. I've since had 5 more, have had so many biopsies and ultrasounds.

Round here there's quite a quick turn around for breast lumps so don't be alarmed that they want to see her quickly.

Honneybunny · 25/01/2008 20:11

I also have had two fibroadenomas (benign). First one at 18 in left breast, second one when 16 weeks pregnant in left armpit. Second one was removed, and about as big as golfball, but first one I had needle biopsy and was left where it was. For both i had ultra sound. Was told that in young women the breast tissue is very dense, and mammography is because of this often useless.
I can imagine why you are scared, but try to relax: she will sense you are scared, and may start worrying herself... I know it is not easy though. Remember that for breast lumps to be malign in such younng women is very very rare! Take care, and good luck!

Shiboriamplehips · 31/01/2008 16:52

its a tumour, not a cyst, and untypical of a fibrodema cos theres a vascular system, and its surrounded by dark patches too, excision and biopsy next week.numb

Breast cancer virtually never happens to women under 20. I mean NEVER. She'd probably get written up as a case study in a top medical journal if she did have a malignant tumour.
Likely causes.

suedonim · 31/01/2008 17:57

I'm so sorry you're having this terrible worry, Shiboriamplehips. Very best vibes for it all to be a false alarm.

Shiboriamplehips · 31/01/2008 20:49

she had a rare auto immune disorder prepuberty, cant help feeling shes a genetic timebomb, her gran died very early of cancer.her scan was my worst nightmare,i knew what i wanted to see,and what i didnt,it was the latter...a 1.5" diameter tumour.like a pear.with a very healthy blood supply.

ajandjjmum · 01/02/2008 08:32

You're obviously doing a good job in not transmitting your worry to her. Hope you've got some support in rl.

Shiboriamplehips · 01/02/2008 10:56

i have support, but what on earth can anyone say?the words im waiting for are "Its benign"
thanks
