I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

have read the thread and am tempted (slightly!) tell m ethings about time and fitting it in and stuff - that is what I am worried about.

pinkspottywellies · 20/01/2008 19:28

Come on BBB join in!! Do it! It's only half an hour 3 times a week. It's literally half an hour as well - not like if you're going to the gym/a class and you have to get there and back and shower and things. When my sis and I went out we got her dp to put the chips in the oven after we'd been out 15 mins so they were ready when we got back . But seriously you can have dinner cooking/bath running/wine chilling while you're out. And you feel great when you realise how much you're improving each time. DO IT!

milkymill · 20/01/2008 20:15

Just got back from my first run and I feel v.pleased with myself! Where do people generally run? I've just done round the block for my 20mins as it's so dark and I'm too much of a wuss to venture further afield yet. Oh well, at least no one can see me in the dark .

hi, was very shyly wondering if there was a weight issue to running. It's just that although i am a couple of stones overweight, I have been very fit and active for about 5 years now, swimming 1/2 mile 4 times a week, gym and recently less swimming but 3 circuit training classes a week. However, circuit training isn't fitting into my schedule at the mo, although I love it, and swimming, by itself, isn't hard enough iykwim. I used to run in my teens and loved it but wondered if my couple of stones of weight would end up giving me splints, or knee probs? would really like some advice.

Misdee · 20/01/2008 21:10

i am 6 stone overwight (but only want to lose 5 max atm). i am just taking it slow. there is a another mumsnet runners thread who have been doing it longer than us, they may know about things to be careful of.

I've bought scales this weekend, and found out to my that I need to loose 2.5 stone to get back into normal BMI - I'm finding the running OK, and I've started from scratch. I am careful to run on grass though, as I worry about my joints on tarmac.

I do have pains in my shins, but have bought new trainers from a proper running shop, which counteract my gait issues, and they have helped a lot. Maybe the pains are a result of being overweight, but the man in the shop said they were because my feet rolled inwards when I run.

Misdee · 20/01/2008 21:13

BBB, i start the five minute warm up as soon as i shut the front door. i tell dh to have a cup of tea ready in 30mins, and it is 30mins, unless i run too far from home, then its a couple of extra minutes cool down walk.

each time its getting easier. and i cant wait for week2 to start tomorrow. must get my trainers dry from yesterdays very wet and muddt run with SGK though.

Misdee · 20/01/2008 21:15

ideally i would run on grass all the time, but can only do that on weekends as i run in the evenings during the week. once its starts to get lighter in the evenings then will go further from home to train.

Race for life registrations opens tomorrow i believe!

who else is signing up?

i'm running for Anorak, Mr Mb and Mr Oj.

I don't think I'd dare try this! I may kill myself!!

Eddas · 20/01/2008 21:28

I want to run the race for life this year, bit late joining the thread, but will be reading through the thread with interest hoping for some tips, although not nowas it's a bit late in the day!

Eddas · 20/01/2008 21:30

And yes Race for life registration begins tomorrow as i tried earlier in the week but was a bit too keen

geordiemacminx · 20/01/2008 21:34

Hey ladies, managed about a mile this morning, running more than I have done the last couple of times I did the same route. Only got to get up to 13... should be a walk in the park

Furball · 20/01/2008 21:40

misdee - i found week 2 not bad as you only run 6 times for 1 1/2 mins.

Minum · 21/01/2008 11:31

Did week 3 sess 2 today, went well, definately getting slightly easier, although still having leg pains. Will work a bit more on the stretching I think.

tortoise · 21/01/2008 19:51

Right! I will be getting back on track tomorrow!
Wk 2 seesion 1! (again) Still not fully over the cold but i will be ok!

Well done to everyone giving it a try and keeping it up.

I will look into race for life but i very much doubt there will be one i can get to.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 21/01/2008 20:09

Race for Life now open for business...!

tortoise · 21/01/2008 20:23

As i thought, all events to far from me.

pinkspottywellies · 21/01/2008 21:45

Just registered for Race for Life and roped my mum and sister in to do it with me!! I'm starting week 3 tomorrow. Should have been today but Tues, Thurs and Sat is going to work out better for me this week. I have motivation to get out and do it tomorrow - I only just have time between getting in from work and CSI starting at 9!
