I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

Please tell me to get my butt out there tonight. I'm feeling giddy and sicky as my meds have been upped but have set today as my start date - what shall I do oh wise MNers?

ivykaty44 · 18/02/2008 15:05

If you are not feeling right then do delay your start. Perhaps leave it till Wednesday.

Otherwise just go for a brisk 20 min walk tonight if you feel you really must.

I havn't been out all last week as I had sinistus (sp?) and was on anti biotics - it was really bad as I wanted to go to the gym and run and wasn't able to as I knew it would make me worse.

Back on my bike at the weekend though and did to gentle rides with my dd2 and today back running and spinning - way hay.

anorak · 18/02/2008 15:31

Hello ladies, I didn't realise you had a thread going, I've just caught up with it. I used to love running and sport when I was able to do it but I'm really really glad I did a lot of sport when I could. It improves your health and fitness for years to follow.

I am totally humbled by the amount of effort you are all going to and knowing as a breast cancer patient I am part of the reason is a wonderful boost to my morale too. I hope you all enjoy your new fitness and any weight loss you are hoping for. We all know how hard it is to lose weight and be fit so can I just say a big well done and thank you.

I love you misdee

LilRedWG · 18/02/2008 17:29

Wednesday it is then! I slept for 1.5 hours this afternoon and am feeling crud Feel like I'm letting myself down though.

LilRedWG · 18/02/2008 17:30

Anorak - you are the one who humbles me.

cherryredretrochick · 18/02/2008 17:58

Anorak, I have only just joined this thread last week, I am so pleased that all the effort these ladies are going to gives you a boost, having read a couple of your posts before I will do my run just for you as I fortunate enough not to have anybody in RL to do it for.
I am heading out to the gym for my second run the second dh gets home and I am looking forward to it so much.

anorak · 18/02/2008 19:11

I must admit I cried a little bit when I first read this thread and now you've made me cry again cherry - in a nice way

pinkspottywellies · 18/02/2008 19:28

Anorak I will be thinking of you when I do my RfL too. I'm doing it with my sister and my mum who has been clear of breast cancer for nearly 4 years!

I went out yesterday after nearly a week off. I'd not been feeling well. I carried on with my next run which was wk 6 session 2 and managed it at a pathetic jog! I've got the 25 minuter on.. oh crap - tomorrow!! I wonder if I ought to do 6:2 again but it would be the first time I'd gone backwards.

Keep up the good work everyone and welcome newbies. I've put on a pound this week and my lovely friend said it'll be muscle with all that running. No, it'll be the meal out, the pizza, the chocolates (mil brought me Herscheys!) and the several days off running! Must get back on track this week.

MrsJohnCusack · 18/02/2008 20:46

hello there
Anorak, I feel like a bit of afraud as I'm not doing RfL as I'm in NZ - but I will be aiming to do some sort of run and it'll probably be for cancer as I've been personally affected by it so many times...

went out last night for run 3 week 1 and it was hard prob because I wasn't feeling all that well yesterday - I still managed it though. 2 nights off now (out both nights) so I can't quite see how I'll manage week2 - but we'll see and at least I've stuck at it for a week - quite somtehing for me!

wheelybug · 18/02/2008 21:42

Well done everyone who's been out today (or last night if you're in t'other hemisphere). Keep at it

Anorak - thanks for the words of encouragement - I am glad we are all boosting each other. I will be thinking of you (if I am capable of thought whilst running) when the big race comes.

PSW - as its the start of hte week you could do 6:2 again if you think you might get out again this week and do 6:3 then. Or, you could just go for 6:3 and see how you get on - you never know you might surprise yourself and my strategy with 5:3 was that if I felt I need to walk at any time I was going to pause the podcast and start it again when I ran so I still ran for the 20 minutes - an idea ?

Furball - looking forward to seeing your name in lights in the 20 minuters !!

I am out tomorrow for 6:1 although knee is playing up again so will see how it is in the morning. Desperately want to do it but so scared of buggering knee in time for skiing.

cherryredretrochick · 19/02/2008 08:20

I had a slight set back last night, when I got to the gym all the treadmills were full. I did 10 mins on a bike and 5 mins on a rower before I could get on a treadmill so I only managed 15mins on the treadmill as I was a bit knackered and I didn't want to overdo it. I did 90 run 2min walk and seemed OK, wish I had pushed myself to the full 20 min now though.
Anorak, sorry I made you cry, I cry at everything so you will be pleased to know that you have now made me cry too (in a good way as well).

Still loving it, I don't want to have a rest day today but I know it is best, I have also lost 3lb since saturday! If I keep that up I will be at my target weight in about 4 weeks. (ONLY JOKING)

LilRedWG · 19/02/2008 08:42

Well done all! Keep it up!

Minum · 19/02/2008 09:13

I'm going to try and go out with DS2 shortly, him on bike, me running, wont be like my lovely peaceful runs while they're at school, but hopefully will keep me going till next week

wheelybug · 19/02/2008 10:58

Hope it went well Minum !

Retro - sounds like you got a good lot of exercise in despite setback ! Well done !

I have just done week 6 () run 1. Found it a bit of a struggle for some reason when I was thinking it would be fine as I had done the 20 minuter. Was a bit achey from sunday, dd had me up half the night and it was a bit chilly so found the breathing a bit tricky. Anyway, excuses, excuses - I did DO it but was disappointed I didn't find it easier ! Oh well - rest until thursday now.

ptangyangkipperbang · 19/02/2008 12:31

Mrs JCusack - please don't feel a fraud. Everyone has different goals, not all are doing the Race For Life. I started the programme to get fitter. I do hope to do a 5km in September for Epilepsy Research as I was diagnosed with epilepsy last year. I would be delighted if I could run all the way but the run isn't my main motivation. I just needed a kick up the backside to get off the sofa, and Misdee was the one who kicked me good and hard

cherryredretrochick · 19/02/2008 12:38

I think you are all fab, I have never seen a bunch of people motivate each other so well, usually it works the other way. . I am so glad you let me join in.
I think the main motivation for everyone is to get fitter, feel better about themselves and perhaps lose a bit of weight alopng the way.

cherryredretrochick · 20/02/2008 08:30

Ok I am off to do run 3 this morning as my mum has dd's. Will be nice and quiet at the gym so should get a treadmill straight away.

misdee · 20/02/2008 12:53

i am so so so tired. was meant to be out for a run today, but feel dead on my feet. will get one in tomorrow evening instead. then rest till the funrun on sunday. please please sponser me

OP posts:
wheelybug · 20/02/2008 17:16

hope the run went well Cherry !

Have sponsored you misdee - a good cause - and a thank you for getting me out there pounding the pavements ! Hope it goes well...

Minum · 20/02/2008 21:34

Have sponsored you Misdee - many thanks for this thread - good luck for Sunday

wheelybug · 21/02/2008 13:40

Did week 6, run 2 this morning. Am finding it hard going this week but I did it !

Hmmm... thats all my interval running finished now though and its just straight runs now. Not convinced how thats going to go. AM trying to decide whether to go for the 25 minuter on the weekend or just stick to a 20 minuter for a while.... Decisions decisions....
PSW and Minum - have either of you managed the 25 minuter yet (I know you've both been unable to run for various reasons)... I don't want to be first .

Itsthawooluff · 21/02/2008 14:17

Oh lord, missed a couple of days because I was in Manchester for work, and did run 1 of week 2 just - and it was really, really [had to cut last 2 jogs to a minute rather than 90 seconds] hard work. But I did do (most of) it - so feeling a bit proud.

It is windy now, and muddier, or do people just struggle with the first run every time you step up to the next week?

Looks with awe at posters contemplating 20/25 mins...............

Itsthawooluff · 21/02/2008 14:24

Oh yeah - sponsored you Misdee. Good luck for Sunday

Minum · 21/02/2008 19:36

WB - I've done 22 mins a couple of times, but not up to 25 mins yet, sort of doing my own thing, rather than the program now. Plan to give 25 mins a go next week, when kids are back at school - good luck if you try it this weekend

pinkspottywellies · 21/02/2008 20:55

Just done 25 mins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have only been once this week as not feeling too well so I thought I would re-do day 2 (10.3.10) but I haven't had to re-do a session yet and I couldn't bring myself to Come on Wheely join the 25 mins club!
