I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

you do each run 3 times

MrsCarrot · 16/02/2008 09:45

I didn't make the morning run

We must go tonight but I am worried I won't be able to do 20 again after this break and it might be tricky as my friend says she did much less without me there, only about two mins so we will see how it goes. I shall force her. Mwah ha ha ha.

MrsJohnCusack · 16/02/2008 10:44

went out this evening for my second go
did it all no probs, didn't feel that hard to do at all TBH, but I do run REALLY slowly.

think I am steadily falling in love with Rawb and his nice sensible voice
BUt I still can't see how I can run for longer than 60 secs. I will be amazed if this program works for me....

cherryredretrochick · 16/02/2008 11:08

I did it, really really enjoyed it, it is very easy to time on the treadmill and I was amazed that I managed the whole 24mins. I looked at the distance when I had finished and I had done 2.7kn, I didn't think that was too bad for a start.

If it is easier on a treadmill should I add ano9ther round or something.

In a couple of weeks we are moving house, next door to a park so I will try to make at least one run a week outdoors.

I am going to look back though the thread and see what the whole programme is.

LilRedWG · 16/02/2008 11:21

Well done both!

I'm re -starting on Monday evening so will let you know how I get on.

ptangyangkipperbang · 17/02/2008 10:02

Well, by 9.15am this morning I was home from my run . What a beautiful day. I've contended with gales and floods in previous weeks so really enjoyed the cold, crisp, sunny weather. I did notice that most houses still had their bedroom curtains drawn so was a bit jealous, but also slightly smug that I was out there, rather than in bed.
I was a bit worried because I hadn't been out for 10 days due to school holidays. I repeated run 3 of week 3, rather than go onto week 4. First 90 sec run - easy. First 3 min run - a struggle. Second 90 sec run - easy. Second 3 min run - far more comfortable. Actually felt like I could do a little bit more. Tho I didn't!
Don't be worried about getting out there after a break - you'll be fine.
Thanks to everyone posting on this thread. It's good to have someone else (not just Rawb ) 'holding my hand'.

Mmmm having a roast dinner for when you get back. Lovely thought Misdee!
Good to hear from you. Thanks so much for this thread. Can you believe it has nearly 800 posts?! Good luck with your fun run. Always used to wonder how they could put those two words together, but I'm beginning to understand now .

Itsthawooluff · 17/02/2008 16:06

Went early on Saturday morning in the end, having spent all Friday sulking - and it was fab. Did all my jog /run sessions to time and felt really good.

Stiffened up in the afternoon, but am fine today. Looking forward to Week 2............

Thanks for the kicks - having asked I felt so guilty I knew I would have to go at some point .

So for all those who have been doing this a bit longer - apart from feeling better in yourself, lets be brutal - is it shifting the flab?

widgypog · 17/02/2008 16:11

wool...I am on week 3 (just) and am doing pilates also and lots of walking, I have lost about half a stone. ( I am not loads overweight so thats quite alot I think).Have also gone down to a 10 from a 12 in some shops. Hope that gives you some inspiration.

Itsthawooluff · 17/02/2008 16:21

Well done widgy!

OK, so what with the prospect of the sweet trolley race, the real prospect of getting my lardy self in better shape and the weather improving, all looking fairly good to me.

Furball · 17/02/2008 16:32

Hooray Wooluffy! - doesn't it make you feel great a) doing it and b) knowing you can do it? Well done.

widgypog for the weightloss - great stuff.

misdee · 17/02/2008 16:44

i lost 7lb last month by running and following slimming world plan.

well i went for my run earlier than planned and it was ok. i managed to do all six runs this time, so finally feel confident about moving upto week 3 on tuesday. its been slow going for me, but i am not in any rush, i still have 4months unti lthe race for life big one, and 7months until the one i am really aiming for, which is my 'favourite' event and thats the harefield fun run. cant wait to meet all other transplantees and families and give them a little shock lol.

How is everyone else doing?

did anyone else find it hard to get motivated over half term?

wheelybug · 17/02/2008 17:13

Yay ! I did it ! I can join the 20 minuters !! Got out this afternoon and it was ok (not brilliant, but definitely ok !). I can't actually believe I did it.

Feel pretty stiff though again so am hoping a bath tonight might help out. I made sure I stretched a bit more this time but not sure it helped.

Well done everyone else who has been out and done another run today - each run is a victory !

Its half term this coming week here but dd is booked into a play session on tuesday and thursday so I have to go out then and run as thats why I've booked her in and then out next weekend to get me through week six. I really didn't think I'd stick it this long. Knee seemed to hold up ok today so just praying it lasts and doesn't give up between now and skiing in 3 weeks !

wheelybug · 17/02/2008 17:14

Oh and I've lost about half a stone which I was quite disappointed about, that that was all as I've also been quite careful with what I've eaten... Am sure its changing to muscle and thats weighing heavier than flab()

widgypog · 17/02/2008 18:11

have just done run 2 week 3 ..can someone tell me at which point( i.e which week)they could run without being out of breath please?

My legs are ok(ish) but my breathing (or lack of) is really the only thing holding me back.

widgypog · 17/02/2008 18:11

p.s well done misdee.!!

widgypog · 17/02/2008 18:12

and wheelybug..very jealous you can run so far!!

bramblebooks · 17/02/2008 18:32

Just repeating week 5 again as I'd had a week off! Inspired by my neighbour who has lost a stone just by going out for regular runs and looks great.

Took my ds1 with me and he managed run 1 too Going to try a 20 minuter tomorrow. (I have registered for a 10k run this summer in order to make me practice!)

widgy, it gradually gets better. Make sure you're not going too fast - someone told me this when I started and it was good advice. You can speed up as you get fitter.

Re treadmill running, try setting it on a slight gradient 2%? to compensate for the hill work you're not doing.

But having a go is enough, i think.

misdee · 17/02/2008 18:51

my 'running' is barely more than a fast trot really. i know people run faster than me, but considering when i started this thread running 1min absolutly killed me, completing 6x90sec runs without that agonising 'burn' i felt before felt fantastic.

i did go all out on the final run though lol.

OP posts:
widgypog · 17/02/2008 20:10

thanks bramble..dont think there is much chance I am going too fast.

Minum · 17/02/2008 20:14

Wheelybug - hurray hurray - welcome to the club ! Thats fab news, what a bunch of winners we are. And well done for sorting out running in half-term, I'm determined to manage it somehow

Great to see all the new people on here, what a fab thread

Furball · 18/02/2008 09:17

friggity biggity it might be me!!

didn't realise that week 5 was first run 3 x 5 mins - which I've done. run 2 = 3 x 8 mins then run 3 (yikes) 20 minuter which I hope to do Saturday morning if I don't come down with my Dh's lovely cold.

MrsCarrot · 18/02/2008 12:54

Well done to everyone!

I am a latent member of the 20 minute club I'm afraid

Last time I went back and did 10 and 10 as ds1's feet hurt in his new trainers and my eyes were streaming so much it got on my nerves and I got cross and petulant.

Am supposed to go tonight but my first period in two years is putting me off a bit tbh. Excuse maybe? Perhaps it was pmt on Saturday.
