I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

I also want to beat the demon depression.

My left heel is fine now but the right one is scabby and bruised. I am hoping to get out on Thursday or Friday at the latest.

MrsMichaelHutchence · 12/02/2008 22:21

very interesting... i don't suffer from depression but i have genuinely felt more energetic and ready to face the world in other ways in the last couple of weeks.

LilRedWG · 12/02/2008 22:23

Right am off to bed! Sleep well all.

wheelybug · 12/02/2008 22:42

hmm.. goals... well here it is to lose weight (1-2 stone) and get fit. We're awaiting a referal appointment to try and find out why I appear unable to conceive after m/c 18 months ago (having conceived easily twice). I'd like to be thinner and healthier if I have to undergo any sort of treatment.

I don't suffer from depression but its definitely making me feel more positive about life, when we've been dwelling on the negative lately, so thats good !

Right week 5 run 1 here I come (after bed !).

MrsJohnCusack · 13/02/2008 08:44

goals: I want to lose weight. at least 3 stone, preferably 4
and I want to be FITTER not practically collapsing in a heap like I did this weekend hoicking DS up and down 87 steps to and from my sister's house
AND sort out depression etc. as exercise is supposed to help (and I think the one thing that would make me feel immeasurably better would be to get some of this lard off me)

dug out pre-childen sports bra today and managed to squeeze into it, but I looked distressingly Matt LUcas-esque in it so off to buy a new one tomorrow and then hopefully off out for my First Go tomorrow evening. Please could you all kick my arse and MAKE ME GO?

MrsCarrot · 13/02/2008 08:55

Hurray for everyone with their goals and achievements.

I would also like to lose 1 - 2 stone, be fit and healthy after a year of recurrent mastitis, and also curb my anxiety which rears up now and then. I want to do the RFL and then maybe more after. I want to be the sort of person that pops out to run for an hour.

I didn't start out with any of these goals, I just wanted to feel a bit better, and I do. Its most evident in the mornings when I can spring out of bed despite having been up with the baby.

Minum · 13/02/2008 08:56

MJC - really looking forward to hearing how you get on tomorrow eveing on your first run - good luck, you'll soon be addicted

Had a good one this morning, 21 mins, I'm happy with the route now, so will stick to it for another week I think. Very foggy, so didnt feel as relaxing as usual, but quite stunning by the river. Still not sure what to wear on these very cold mornings, I was cold when I started out, but fine by the end. Bit shivery now, will go upstairs and shower and dress.

my goals?

to be able to run around after my children.
to help me lose another 3stone by the end of the year.

to feel more energetic and motivated.

back after week 4 run 2. I do find it hard when after 2.5 mins into it he says your half way through your first 5 mins and I'm thinking only half way feels like much longer than that.

tis good stuff.

Minum - I wore This this morning with a zip fleece to warm up with then tie it round my waist. But that top is good (and cheap!)

Minum · 13/02/2008 09:18

Mmm interesting top, that might do the trick. I'm currently running in a sleeveless t-shirt, and a thin cotton hoody, which sometimes I take off mid-run, leaving me bare-armed running over the frosty grass - the joys of being in my 40s!

Furball · 13/02/2008 09:19

goals are much the same as everyone elses. to be fitter, to lose some weight (2 stone +) really to give me a lift and sense of achievement.

I am proud of everyone here who does have weight to shift as the mental image of 'joggers' are slim jim greyhound types. lETS GO GIRLS!

Furball · 13/02/2008 09:20

minum - I usually run in a t shirt but this morning was a bit toooo chilly. Also had hat and gloves! which I don;t normally

Minum · 13/02/2008 09:25

Gloves are the thing, you're right, I'm going to dig them out today, and add to the mp3 player etc by the front door.

MrsCarrot · 13/02/2008 09:34

I couldn't do it wothout gloves at the moment, it feels like the wind is slicing through my fingers otherwise.

MrsCarrot · 13/02/2008 09:35

without

LadyJogsAlot · 13/02/2008 10:06

MJC, once you start you'll be addicted!
misdee, draw a line in the sand and move on. when are you next going out?

how's everyone else doing?

ptangyangkipperbang · 13/02/2008 10:21

I haven't been able to run since last week because the DS's are off school. Feel itching to get out there. Ate a massive bag of corn chips last night . I haven't done anything like that since starting this programme 3 weeks ago so am really cross with myself. However, on the good side it does seem to show that this programme 'keeps me on the straight and narrow' re my eating. Just need to get out there again.
Reading this thread and seeing how brilliantly everyone is progressing is making me even more desperate to get out there. Can't believe how good I feel after each session - and I'm the least likely runner you have EVER seen .

Minum · 13/02/2008 10:58

I'm really worried about how to get out next week in half-term, just working on a plan to take DS2 to playground, and run round it with DS1 which will be a short route, but OK if we do it a few times.

Furball · 13/02/2008 11:05

I've decided to go in the evening next week

wheelybug · 13/02/2008 11:44

Just did week5, run 1 - woo hoo !! Haven't been out for almost a week and thought it would be a struggle but it was ok. When I first started running I felt a bit stiff but settled in and was v. pleasantly surprised when he said 5 mins were up . Makes me think I might make the 8 minuter tomorrow.... Still not convinced though by 20 mins but we'll see how tomorrow goes.

Minum · 13/02/2008 12:01

Wow WB brilliant - You'll make the 8 mins, and the 20, we're on a roll on this thread In some ways I find the begining of the run the hardest, till I "settle in".

MrsCarrot · 13/02/2008 12:53

Me too - its on the first stretch that I think I can't do it then I settle in.

It's half term for us this week. Do most of you run in the day then? I usually go between 5 and 7pm. Its a good time of day to get out though I think you are meant to exercise earlier. I hate that stressful bit between dinner and bed so I'm happy to wave goodbye to them all and come back for bedtime.

Furball · 13/02/2008 12:58

I go about 8.20 am

wheelybug · 13/02/2008 13:16

I go mid morning when dd is at pre-school. DH leaves v. early and comes home v. late so can't run early or late. Next week is our half term and I've booked dd into a couple of play mornings at the leisure centre so I can go for a run !
