I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

AitchTwoOh · 07/02/2008 20:43

i can't.

misdee · 07/02/2008 20:48

well done ladies.

i am still on week two as am not happy about moving up yet, bear in mind ihave done no exercise for many years and am a lardarse.

i managed to get a run in BEFORE the school run this morning, was very impressed, had a lot more energy and it was easier. however at lunch time i came down with a horredous headache and went back to bed for 2hours still feeling roigh today.

i have aquafit tomorrow so no running for me, but will be back out there on saturday morning.

misdee, you are doing very well indeed. you know how much admiration and respect i have for you, don't you? you are great, and you'll get wherever you need to go with this, because you're stronger and cooler than the rest of us put together. i tell you, Misdee, run for Prime Minister and i'll vote for ya.

misdee · 07/02/2008 20:56

lol Aitch, i am not running for PM, i am running for BHF

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 07/02/2008 20:59

ach, that's how they all start.

MissCreant · 07/02/2008 21:29

I just don't believe I can get from 6 mins to twenty in a week either. Thats more than twice as long after the point where I feel I will die.

MissCreant · 07/02/2008 21:30

hang on, more than three times

AitchTwoOh · 07/02/2008 21:56

don't worry, you'll be dead by the time you get to 18 mins anyway.

pinkspottywellies · 07/02/2008 22:13

Misdee you're doing really well. Keep motivated and go at your own pace - it's great that you've got runs booked in to give you something to work towards.

I can't believe I've managed to run for 8 mins! If I'd seen it on the programme a couple of weeks ago I'd not have believed it. I'm really trying to have faith about week 5 session 3!

LilRedWG · 08/02/2008 08:57

Well done ladies! You are all doing fabulously!

I'm hoping to get some running shoes this weekend so will be able to start properly next week. My right heel is still a mess, but I'll stick some vaseline on it and see if that helps.

wheelybug · 08/02/2008 09:08

Well done PSW ! Can't wait to hear how you get on with the 20 minuter - that'll be me next week... gulp...

Come on Aitch and MrsC - Positive thinking please (). Rawb will get you through and, if its any consolation, I think the music is beginning to get a bit better (I swear there were actual proper instruments in the last track of week 4 !).

Well done Misdee - I think the key is keeping going out and running and not giving up. I had a friend who used to rave about Aqua-aerobics and she lost loads of weight doing it.

RIght we're off for the weekend with a load of friends to undo all the good work I've done in the last 4 weeks ... just about to pack the bacona nd eggs for breakfast and load the car down with wine. Ah well....

Minum · 08/02/2008 10:25

Well that was brilliant - I did wk5 run2 - the two 8min runs ! I needed the long walk in the middle. I cant believe I'll be able to do a solid 20 mins next time, but I'm going to give it a shot. I think the pain and aching seems to stay contstant, I'm finding it as hard to do 8 mins now, as I did to do 60secs at the begining - does this mean it would only hurt this much to do the marathon eventually

Good luck to everyone today, it really is beautiful out there, the sun was shining on the river, and the mist just sitting over the park, I really loved doing my stretches and looking out on that.

ptangyangkipperbang · 08/02/2008 10:26

I have just finished week 3 and am reeling with horror at the schedule for week 4. 90 secs easy now but the 3 minute one a bit of a struggle. Also very annoyed with our friend Rob who begins to speak, not to say well done you've completed your longest run yet, but tells you you've still got another minute to go. I quite liked him till then .
Motivated by wheelybug saying that there is better music next week! Wish it wasn't half term next week because if I can't get out to run then it will be extremely hard to motivate myself to do such a scary looking schedule after a week off.

ptangyangkipperbang · 08/02/2008 10:28

And misdee stop beating yourself up about not progressing as quickly as you'd like to. You're the reason we're all on the programme being brainwashed by Rawb. Thank you.
Has anyone e-mailed him yet? Go on, admit to it, your secret's safe with me.

wheelybug · 08/02/2008 11:43

Hey Kipper - if you see my post of this time last week (think it was saturday I finished week 3) you'll see I was posting almost the same as you now but I have managed week 4 ! Thats why its great to have different people at different stages on the same programme I think.

wheelybug · 08/02/2008 11:43

Well done Minum !! Am looking forward to hearing how both you and Pinkspotty do on the 20 min run ! Wishing you both a good run !

pinkspottywellies · 08/02/2008 20:03

WB yeah it's great to have people at different stages . But me and Minum haven't got anyone (except Rawb!) to tell us it'll be ok next week!! We need the most encouragement!

Minum where do you run? It sounds beautiful. I just get street lamps casting an eerie glow across the dog poo strewn pavement not quite so poetic! (and I'm exaggerating the poo!)

savedbygrace · 08/02/2008 21:04

Great idea for thread....I'm 7 stone over weight and have signed up for Chester race for life.......
I'm also trying to lose weight,

(I also have bad knees and bad back - not from weight, though that doesn't help)

I've also started a blog
dietingdisasters.blogspot.com

Em xx

Minum · 09/02/2008 08:42

PSW, everybody.......... I did it I ran for 20 minutes non stop ! I can't believe it. I forgot to copy over the 20 minute running track I'd prepared, so I ran continually through the 8/5/8 track, so it was actually 21 minutes

I feel very hot now, and my legs are aching, but I'm so happy. I'm going to go and wake DH up and tell him!

I run by the Thames in West London. It was especially lovely today, with mist over the rowers on the water, and frost on the grass.

Good luck to everyone running this weekend

misdee · 09/02/2008 09:09

i have pulled a muscle no idea how, must have overdone it at my 'beginners' (ha, that was bloomin hard work yestyerday) aquafit class. even the instrcutor looked done in yesterday.

am going to rest it a couple of days and then ease back into the running again.

so i am hobbling about today.

OP posts:
MissCreant · 09/02/2008 09:28

Oh, no, Misdee, hope you feel better soon and that you can get some rest today.

Minum - well done you! Thats amazing. I have the first, 8 5 8 later and that seems bad enough. How did you carry on once i got to 8 mins and you knew you stiil had to run more than twice as long. Did you zone out a bit? I have found myself almost meditating as I run, its quite weird.

Dh says my behind is a lot firmer. Yay!

wonkywellies · 09/02/2008 09:30

Well I did it - I actually ran - well jogged!! Its the first time in many many years and I can't beleive that something I've been terrified of doing for so long was actually ok. In fact I felt good doing it and survived it without falling over, having a heart attack or dying of embarrassment. I've done two sessions so far and am really looking forward to going for a run again tonight. Thanks to this thread I got my overweight arse of the couch and I've signed up for the 5km

savedbygrace · 09/02/2008 14:57

I'm waiting for DH to get back from golf, so that I can go for 1st run! (ever)

man, i would not like to be my knees

widgypog · 09/02/2008 15:22

I did my 3rd run week one yesterday and am really looking forward to next run tommorrow. I am gonna step up to week 2 so wish me luck.
