I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

I have put on half a stone

and before anyone says muscle weighs more than fat, some of you have reported losing pounds.
We do not run past a burger van, or come back via the pub. This is most unfair.

LardyMardyDaisy · 09/02/2008 16:28

i just found this thread so might join in late if that's OK?

I've just signed up for the Cancer Research UK 5km Race for Life

thanks for the links to the training regime; no excuses now for not being fit enough by 18th May.

widgypog · 09/02/2008 16:29

miss creant ..try meausuring yourself. my weight hasnt changed but my trousers are definately looser.

Furball · 09/02/2008 19:26

don't talk to me about runs - I've been struck down with the poops and can hardly get off the sofa. hopefully it will aid my weightloss!

pinkspottywellies · 09/02/2008 20:07

I did it!!!!!!!!! [g rin]

I did the 20 mins!! Well done Minum! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I finished!! It was a very steady jog but I didn't want to overdo it and not be able to finish. I can't believe I managed it

Misdee, sorry to hear about your sports injury make sure you rest and get back into your training when you're ready. How's SGK?

LardyMardy - your race for life is the same day as mine. Where are you doing it?

Savedbygrace hope your first run went well!

MrsC I got some new scales and they weigh me about 3lb heavier than my old ones (you did say you got new ones didn't you?) I adjusted my weight loss to account for that but still means I'm heavier than I thought. I bet you're loads more toned anyway. Also if you weigh yourself at different times of day it can make a huge difference. I always try to do it first thing in the morning. (And besides you don't need to lose any weight.)

savedbygrace · 09/02/2008 20:30

i did it, and now i feel like i'm dying! but in a good way

LardyMardyDaisy · 09/02/2008 20:32

I'm doing Temple Newsam in Leeds pinkspottywellies.

I did one a few years ago, with no taining and it took me 45 mins , but at least I got round.

I'm aiming to at least half that time if I get the training in!

From a quick scan of the thread, it looks like there a good few achievements already.

I'm going to start mine on Monday, but my DH works way all week so training time is very limited for me, unless I take the buggy out with me as well!

pinkspottywellies · 09/02/2008 20:52

I did it 2 years ago too Lardy but I used being pg as an excuse not to train and run it! Don't know how long it took us to walk. Have you got a friend who can help you out in the week? I take dd and lunch round to my friend's house (if I can't do it in the evening when dh is home) then I whizz off for my half hour and come back and do lunch!

AitchTwoOh · 09/02/2008 21:11

WELL DONE to all the new people on the thread, really, how fab are we all? i did run 3 of week 2 and already found it a good bit easier than at the beginning. what am i on next, is week 3 bad?
i also spend the whole afternoon walking around with dd and the buggy so i reckon i've covered miles and miles today. my knee is a bit sore, under the bone... what should i do? should i not run on Monday?

Mumooms · 09/02/2008 22:45

Hi everyone mind if i join? I ran day 1 of week 1 today! And I enjoyed it too! The podcast was really helpful, I doubt I would have done well watching the timings myself, its just not the same as having someone telling you what to do is it?

Anyway, I just signed up for the Race For Life on July 6th in Newport. Hopefully that'll give me something to aim for! I've always been unfit and its about time I did something about it! So I've been going to pilates the last few weeks with a friend, and we're now thinking about boxercise as well so with the running too, i'm hoping ill be fit in no time

Looking forward to the next run, probably monday evening. Good luck everyone and well done those further on than me. You're all doing so well!

MrsCarrot · 10/02/2008 09:18

Hello, hello to new people. Yes, join in minums!

Aitch - I think you should probably still run unless its very painful. Mine has been a bit puffy under the bone for some of the runs but it doesn't seem to be getting worse. I have some exercises for it.

Pink - I bought new scales as I thought the other ones were broken but they weren't. I thought you'd lost lots since Christmas? Anyway this morning it was only a 3 1b gain so that doesn't seem to bad. I am more toned, actually, amazingly so considering its only been a few weeks. My stomach is still omnipresent though.

Yesterday we did 8 8 8 and it was really good, I think I could have carried on a bit longer though I'm not sure 20 mins would have been possible.

Well done to those who've done it. What happens after 20 mins anyway? How long does 5k take to run or is how long is a piece of string?

MrsCarrot · 10/02/2008 09:18

sorry, mumooms

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 10/02/2008 09:53

Ooo you lot are doing well! Some of you sound addicted - hard to believe it'll happen when you first go out.

Mrs Carrot re 5k - takes around 30 minutes (obviously depends on your pace), 10min mile is a good steady jog. I don't know the programme you're doing but I always found a good way to extend my run was to get dh to drop me off somewhere - say 3 miles or whatever from home and run back. Psychologically I find it easier to run 'home' than an out and back route IYSWIM and could carry on through the difficult bits knowing each step is getting me closer.

And don't worry about struggling for the first mile or so - people who run long distance often hate that first 10 minutes, til you find your rhythm. I still do my first mile muttering and moaning.

Sabayon · 10/02/2008 10:06

that's really interesting, saggars, ta.

my knee is Proper Sore now...
it was fine on my run yesterday, it's just that i probably walked about 10k with the buggy yesterday so i think i've irritated something.
i have a tubigrip on and it feels a bit better, but i just want it to stop. it just feels like my kneecap could shear off from the ball joint, iykwim? yick.

Aitch · 10/02/2008 10:08

whoops!

MrsCarrot · 10/02/2008 10:12

Ew, that is very descriptive, Sabayon! Hope it feels better soon.

Saggers - is it 30 mins? I thought it would be around 45. Thats sounds promising. We are roughly following the pod programme but not listening to it. We chat a lot! Thats interesting about the first ten minutes thing, I definitely find that stretch hard going.

misdee · 10/02/2008 10:13

lol aitch.

my leg is also stil lsore, so no running today it feels tight, which is hard to explain. have got my bike out of the shed, so will hopefully get out and about on that for a little while as well.

addicted sagger? never? i honestly dont miss it when i cant go out, i really dont feeel like crying right now that i cant go for a run on this glorious morning, i really am not eying up my running shoes and think 'just a short one would be ok'

OP posts:
Aitch · 10/02/2008 10:16

misdee,

i am concerned that you are doing too much. if i was doing any more than the three runs a week i'd want to slit my throat. and my jiggered knee. be careful lovely, it's a marathon, not a sprint.

MrsCarrot · 10/02/2008 10:16

oh, aitch, its you!

Maybe you better go to the doctor?

MrsCarrot · 10/02/2008 10:20

misdee - I know what you mean. I can't imagine getting to the stage where I think I want to run because its a lovely day. We have only been at night anyway.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 10/02/2008 10:21

lol misdee - there's nothing worse than wanting to get out but not being able to. An itch you can't scratch.

Carrot - I did my first RFL in 27 mins. I'd been running for about a year on and off. All the ones I've done since have been closer to the 30 minute mark. Age is slowing me down I'm afraid so I've traded up to 10k. Shuffling along seems more acceptable at that distance lol! Anyway, don't worry about the time, once you can do 5k without walking you can be introduced to the joys of interval training if you want to increase your speed.

Aitch · 10/02/2008 10:22

i think i might take a wander down to the local running shop later and get new shoes, the ones i'm wearing are adidas, and though running shoes were originally designed in '89. [trainer geek] genuinely don't know how i'll feel about wearing a brand other than adidas, though, i am oddly loyal in that one area.

it's not sore all the time, i should say, just if i turn in bad, say, it feels like half my knee is separating a bit. that sounds gross, doesn't it?

Aitch · 10/02/2008 10:23

turn in bed, sorry.

misdee · 10/02/2008 10:24

aitch, honestly not doing too much. i started bike riding a few months ago, and out my bike away for the winter. i need to get bread and dont want to take the car. but cant find my ratehr fetching rucksack, so looks like i'll be walking to the shop instead.

i do only run 3/4 days a week, but will admit to do some small activity on the other days. aquafit on fridays is 45mins and usually ok, but the other day was a hard one. i laugh at people who days its easy lol. it is hard work, but usually quite gentle. you do feel like you have had a proper workout though.

OP posts:
Aitch · 10/02/2008 10:27

i really liked aquafit when i was pg, found it was really all-over and exhausting without being too jarring. i dunno, misdee, my exercise-mad chums inform me that the rest days are as important as the on-days, iykwim? your body needs to process the information, and recover from any niggles. or so i'm told at any rate.
