I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

I have just completed Week 3, run 2. After me nearly collapsing in Week 1 when I had to run for 60 seconds I can't believe that already I'm thinking that a 90 second run is really easy . If I can do it anyone can.

LilRedWG · 05/02/2008 13:17

Well done - that's fantastic!

widgypog · 05/02/2008 18:28

Hi, I have just done my 2nd run week one. I REALLY enjoyed it again. I actually wanted to go out yesterday but have stuck to the rules so I hung on. My dh bought me a armband for my ipod which is really good.

I cant believe I am actually running!!!

widgypog · 05/02/2008 18:32

running shoes
does anyone think these will be good for running as I have a load of next vouchers to spend or should I go to a running shop and try them on

widgypog · 05/02/2008 18:35

p.s I have just scrolled down the list for week 5 ..(I didnt dare look before). Will I really be running that far in just 4 weeks time?

Minum · 05/02/2008 18:43

WP - yes you will be running that far ! I'm starting week 5 tomorrow, nervous, but I'm really looking forward to it - I'm going to be a proper runner

widgypog · 05/02/2008 19:11

well done minum ..let me know how you get on.

pinkspottywellies · 05/02/2008 20:14

Just started week 5!! It's actually less running than last week for session 1 (only by a minute)!

Well done kipper. It's a really progressive programme isn't it! I really doubt being able to do 20 mins by the end of the week but I keep telling myself that I doubted that I'd be out for half an hour the first day, that I'd be able to do the 3 minutes, then the 5 minutes..... so I'm just trying to have faith

I don't know about that Next link Widgy. They look like proper running trainers (rather than fashion) and I didn't get mine from a running shop or get measured properly. I would think they'd be ok unless you have problems when you run - quite a few of us have had knee/ankle problems so then it would be an idea to go to a running shop I guess.

I realised tonight that I haven't had a stitch for a while I was getting them every time for the first couple of weeks. Also realised that this thread is a bit like having a blog and will be nice to look back on

Thanks again Misdee for starting this thread and for everyone's company and support !

SGK - How are you getting on? Have you been to the doctors? Got my fingers crossed for your bhf run.

wheelybug · 05/02/2008 22:07

well done everyone thats been out today - you're doing great. (that was your longest run yet, now is a good time to check your running position..... (do you think its brainwashing ?))

Widgy - I'd think the shoes are fine unless you decide you're going to start training for the marathon or something.

Good luck tomorrow Minum. I'm off for week 4, run 2 tomorrow providing my cold hasn't progressed by then. Fingers crossed. Have new trousers and new armband for phone.

Minum · 06/02/2008 08:44

OK its AF and I have a humungous hangover, but I did it roll on the 8 minute run

Good luck to everyone today, its a beautiful day.

LadyJogsAlot · 06/02/2008 11:10

well done minum

i feel so exhausted this week. it was a struggle to go to my aerobics class last night. however, i did and tonight i don't have to go anywhere thank god.

next jog thursday.

i can't believe that this is my 5th week doing all this exercise. need to keep motivated...

wheelybug · 06/02/2008 11:55

Yay ! Well done on the run Minum and on the aerobics Ladyjogs - I can't imagine adding more exercise to the programme (faints...)

I've just done Week 4 Run 2 - It was oging really well and I was feeling pretty good until teh middle of the last run when I got the most awful stitch. Had to slow to a walk to get rid of it but I did stop the podcast and restart. What causes stitches - does anyone know ? and how do you get them to go away quickly ? I haven't had one since the first week... harumph.

I was out for 3 miles again so feel pretty chuffed about that !

Furball · 06/02/2008 12:32

beautiful day and can't go yet - am waiting in for 2 deliveries.

will try and go tonight for week 3 run 3, but don't know how I'll cope as usually go first thing.

Flier · 06/02/2008 12:42

Hi, Can I join in please? I'll need to give this thread a proper read this evening.

xx

widgypog · 06/02/2008 12:49

flier. I only started on Sunday so dont worry that you are behind

Flier · 06/02/2008 12:58

thanks widgypog

AitchTwoOh · 06/02/2008 21:16

yay, flier!

i've just done run 2 week 2... oh i do so like when Rawb says that it's over bar the cooldown.

tortoise · 06/02/2008 21:43

My running shoes arrived today. They feel comfy.
Do you wear them as everyday shoes too or keep them just for running?
I don't think DD2 will be at pre-school tomorrow so the only way i can get out to jog is with her in the buggy. Better than not at all i guess. I am getting really frustrated at not being able to fit a jog in. Would be ok if i wasn't single and could leave DC with someone!

Furball · 07/02/2008 09:01

just finished week 3. Lets hope I can step it to week 4 [yikes]

wheelybug · 07/02/2008 10:53

well done furball ! I felt exactly the same a week ago but I am just about to go about and do my last run of week 4 and its been ok so far although don't really feel in the mood today but if I don't do today I won't get 3 in because we're away from tomorrow all weekend...

Not sure though about week 5 - yikes !!

AitchTwoOh · 07/02/2008 12:08

tortoise, i am reliably informed by a running chum that it is v norty to wear your trainers for bumming around in. and good luck with the buggy, i htink i'll have to do that a couple of times, but anything's better than nothing, isn't it?

MissCreant · 07/02/2008 13:07

not sure if I should be here if I'm not following the podcast as its hard to compare. This is our 3rd, or 4th? week and yesterday we did, 55556, and I felt totally knackered afterwards. My knees hurt today too, they feel slightly jelly-like. I must start the exercises GP gave me.

wheelybug · 07/02/2008 13:44

FInished week 4 - yay ! - all went ok, no stitch this time (think it may have been caused by drinking water whilst I ran ?).

Have just looked at week 5 - looks scarey. Am a bit concerned as I might not be able to get out now until wednesday which will mean almost a week off running so whether I'll be up to it ??

pinkspottywellies · 07/02/2008 20:21

WB my netball teacher always used to say keep running if you get a stitch and that's what I do! Also I started week 4 after nearly a week's gap having been ill so I'd give week 5 a try. You can always slow down if you need to.

I've just done week 5 session 2 - 2 lots of 8 mins!!!!!!! I feel quite confident about the next one now too - 20 mins but I know I can jog as slow as I need to!

AitchTwoOh · 07/02/2008 20:32

i kind of can't believe i'll be able to jog for 8 mins, that 90 secs really puffed me out. i did it, you know, but it seems crazy to think we'll be at eight mins in a couple of weeks.
