I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

I'll do the Harefield one with you, Misdee, if that's OK - think you know why! How far is it and where does it take place? Hey, I could just google, right?!

I started running last year, was doing pretty well - amazing how quickly fitness levels increase.

Then I went running between Christmas and New Year when I was just starting a cold - turned into sinusitis - I got really, really cold when I was out. So think I need a running hat for the cold weather! One that comes over my ears. I have these shoes and they are really comfortable.

misdee · 03/02/2008 22:12

i will put you in your ds1 wheelchair and push u round it.

SGK, definitely go and see somebody. Is the arch of the shoe you wore too high for you? I had a pair of Nikes I took back before I got the Saucony ones - the curved part of the instep was too high and hard and made my foot ache walking round on carpet in them.

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2008 22:14

lol misdee, I thiknk it might be a bit small

I cannot recommend highly enough going to a proper running shop and being fitted for shoes by someone who knows about running.

pinkspottywellies · 03/02/2008 22:14

hunker I wear dh's hat when I run. I think it looks like I'm off to rob the Post Office

misdee · 03/02/2008 22:14

excellant hunker. its usually the first sunday of sept, was the second sunday last year as i think the first one fell on the first.

there are two runs, a 1mile one, that i walk with the kids usually (peter can do that with them this year) and the 3mile one as well.

I have high arch, but my kids have hypermobile joints, which they said is genetic, so I could have that too.

misdee · 03/02/2008 22:17

hunker, how do u find a good running shop? i think my shoes are fine, i did that footstep thingy on a running site i looked at, cant remeber if i over-probnate or whatever now, but ordered the shoes recommended.

i wear a wooly hat on cold days, and some fingerless gloves. i look quite funny lol. i ran round the industrail estate at end of shift time and heard a few giggle, didnt care as in a few months i will be zipping past them lol.

This link was mentioned on a running site I was looking at last year - the shop is v near me.

How about this one for you?

Harefield run is a date then - how amazing that Peter's going to do it this year!!!

misdee · 03/02/2008 22:24

he's done the run before with the LVAD in 2006, but was recovering from transplant in 2007. we took him out afterwards to meet people he hadnt seen for a while. they all looked so amazedto see him machine-less.

Am going out this evening for my first session! Wish me luck! I'm not sure I'll be able to do three this week - I think it may kill me. Will do tonight and see how I go.

Minum · 04/02/2008 10:27

Good luck LRWG tonight, I'm sure you'll do brilliantly (and think of the buzz afterwards )

I went to watch DS1 play rugby yesterday, it broke my heart, as he is so unfit . So I talked to him again about running, and why he's finding it so hard ; he wants a mapped out route, so he can see how far he needs to run, rather than using the music to mark the intervals. So I did week4 again this morning, with a map of the park, and marked the walks/runs, so hopefully when he goes out tonight with DH, he'll find it motivating, and easier to stick to.

I'm sharing this in case anyone else is finding it hard to use the timing method and might find it easier to try marking the route with landmarks instead.

AitchTwoOh · 04/02/2008 10:40

minum, you could show your boy www.gmap-pedometer.com/ this, my friend says it's great for measuring out distances.
good luck lilred, i'm sure you'll enjoy it.

LilRedWG · 04/02/2008 10:50

Thanks! I'm really very unfit though. Will I really manage three runs in one week?

AitchTwoOh · 04/02/2008 10:56

well tbh you can comfort yourself with the fact that you only really run for 8 minutes...

LilRedWG · 04/02/2008 10:59

That is true

Minum · 04/02/2008 11:42

AitchTwoOh that link is fantastic, thank you so much, I've been looking for something like that for ages He'll love playing with that, and it will be brilliant for me when we get to the stage we can do long runs.

Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou !!!

AitchTwoOh · 04/02/2008 11:56

it is really good, isn't it? i've just been fiddling about with it myself. just think, in nine weeks time, haw haw...
