I woke up completely blind in left eye, should my husband stay home?

I woke up this morning completely blind in my left eye, the vision is coming back now, I’m terrified. My husband and I car share and he’s going to work in a minute and we have a young baby and don’t have any family nearby. Should my husband stay home? I’m really worried and feel I need to see a doctor but hour doctor surgery is too far to walk so I won’t be able to see anyone if he takes the car

He wants to go to work and for me to keep an “eye” on it

Update added by MNHQ - the OP HAS gone to A&E

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

I am at increased risk of retinal detachment, and the advice I've been given is to go immediately to the eye hospital (Moorfields would be my nearest) as your sight can only be saved if dealt with as a matter of urgency.

Not saying that's what that is, just trying to stress the urgency of this - you don't mess about with your sight.

Frankly I can't believe anyone would say anything other than, of course he shouldn't go to work, he should be taking you to hospital - and any half decent employer would completely understand.

I was told the same as I had symptoms of detachment, it resolved but doctor still warned me if anything similar happened I had to get straight to the hospital.

He does need to take the morning off and get you to hospital.

I hope everything is OK, I know it is a scary thing to go through.

ancientgran · 28/02/2022 10:24

Just seen your update. So glad you are at A&E, fingers crossed all is good.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/02/2022 10:41

Glad you are at A&E. That must have been scary.

PearPickingPorky · 28/02/2022 10:43

Glad you've gone to A&E. This is something I got (not as severely) when I was pregnant, and while on the combined pill, and the GP told me it was a high risk factor for a stroke. The fact you have a baby would make me worry it's something similar.

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/02/2022 10:46

How awful OP! Glad you've gone to A&E. Let us know how you are.

Notanotherwindow · 28/02/2022 10:55

Well you can't drive yourself. You don't know if this will suddenly get worse again. Why the hell hasn't he taken you to A&E straight away?

Rightsraptor · 28/02/2022 11:04

OP's husband probably minimised this through fear - not an uncommon reaction. But his life would be turned upside down if OP has a serious stroke/ goes blind whatever. It could be something minor, but start off assuming it's serious and work backwards. OP has definitely done the right thing in going to A&E. Please let us know what happens.

neelhtak · 28/02/2022 11:16

You need to see a doctor now.It may not be serious but you can don't know that.Nothing more important than your health.

superplumb · 28/02/2022 11:19

Get to a&e . Not normal. I've had hundreds of migraines and get funny lines in my eyes but I've never lost sight. Either your husband drives you or you get a taxi xx

SlightlyJaded · 28/02/2022 11:22

Best of luck OP.

Hopefully nothing serious but definitely not something to be ignored. Hope you have an answer soon.

Thisisconfusing · 28/02/2022 11:22

Sounds like you should be at A&E and preferably in an Eye Hospital A&E . It might be a good idea to speak to your GP so he can get you an urgent referral . Our Eye Hospital A&E doesn’t accept walkins but does accept optician and GP referral for immediate attention. I developed a sudden issue with my eye and got an urgent referral to go immediately . I didn’t even know we had a local eye hospital .

@RampantIvy

Can people please read the OP's update before posting. Just click on See All at the bottom of her first post.

THE OP IS AT A & E

Sorry for shouting.

Shout all you like. See All isn't available on the Android app.
RampantIvy · 28/02/2022 11:45

I had no idea. I don't use the app because the functionality isn't great (Android user here as well)

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 28/02/2022 11:48

Great you are at hospital op. Hope you get seen by the docs quickly and all is OK.

Wheresthebeach · 28/02/2022 12:04

Glad you're being seen OP.

Lack of 'see all' on the Adroid app would explain a lot!

Irridescantshimmmer · 28/02/2022 12:08

Speak to an optician, they may put drops in your eyes which make your pupils dilate so they will see the retina and optic nerve. You may need to get both eyes screened ( looked at) and may be referred to an eye hospital eventually but this depends on the cause.

I understand, its a shock when this happens I have my eyes screened once a year because I'm diabetic.

Happyfeet77 · 28/02/2022 12:10

Hot foot to A&E!

BusinessMindThoughts · 28/02/2022 12:20

You should still scan/search for OP's posts, especially on threads like this.

RTFT she’s at the hospital for gods sake.

JackieQueen · 28/02/2022 12:25

Good luck opFlowers

TheVolturi · 28/02/2022 12:38

A couple hrs after I had my second baby, this happened to me, but both eyes. I was frantic, I could see shapes but the rest was just a blurry mess. The midwives came and did my obs and said I was perfectly fine, nothing to note. They told me to have a rest and eat something and made me a sugary tea, and it passed. Lasted about 30 mins I think. They were not worried and blamed it on me giving birth and then jumping in a hot bath and being too up and about.
Never happened since.

PeakyBlender · 28/02/2022 12:52

Hope you're okay.

AnxiousMum875 · 28/02/2022 13:25

I hope it's nothing too serious. Do let us know that you're OK.

Chloesss · 28/02/2022 13:36

THANK YOU everyone so much for your kind messages.

I haven’t had much help, A&E doctor literally looked in my eye with a light and asked a few questions (I guess to rule out stroke) they did say it’s very uncommon for someone at my age to lose complete sight in one eye, and to call the eye hospital, as they Can’t do much at A&E.

I phoned the eye hospital who said as my vision has now gone back to normal that it’s unlikely a retinal detachment, she did mentioned that it could be a vision migraine (without the headache) but she did say it wouldn’t usually go completely black with a vision migraine. Eye hospital asked me to see an optician for a special check thing, the optician wont see me until tomorrow!

They said if it comes back again to phone the eye hospital. Im terrified of it coming back and as no one has physically check anything I can’t see how nothing serious has been ruled out.

Thank you again to everyone who messaged x

Okay, well you have a plan.

If it or some other 'abnormality' occurs again, call the eye hospital immediately. Or present there if they have an A&E.

Otherwise, see the optician tomorrow. They have equipment to look into the backs of your eyeballs and check eye health, and may be able to give you some more information.

Very stressful for you - take care.
