I woke up this morning completely blind in my left eye, the vision is coming back now, I’m terrified. My husband and I car share and he’s going to work in a minute and we have a young baby and don’t have any family nearby. Should my husband stay home? I’m really worried and feel I need to see a doctor but hour doctor surgery is too far to walk so I won’t be able to see anyone if he takes the car

He wants to go to work and for me to keep an “eye” on it

Update added by MNHQ - the OP HAS gone to A&E

Glad you are getting seen Chloe.

As others have said the best setting for someone with these symptoms is a A&E in a hospital with an eye unit. There are several 'non eye' causes of sudden visual loss with recovery. If goes to an standalone eye unit first there is the risk of being sent across the city to another hosp

Charliesgotachocolatefactory · 28/02/2022 08:27

Ah, should RTFT! Glad you are at A&E, hope you get some answers soon.

Where is your nearest walk in eye clinic? If you are in London its possibly Western Opthalmic or Moorfields but check for your locality here:

www.nhs.uk/service-search/other-services/Eye%20-%20accident%20and%20emergency%20services/LocationSearch/1858

These are walk in emergency clinics for eye problems. If your GP runs a triage system it may be worth talking to them first but odds are they will tell you to go to an eye clinic. Be prepared for a long wait...

StiffyBing · 28/02/2022 08:30

This is called transient amaurosis. It is a proper warning shot across the bows. It can be idiopathic (no cause found) but it is absolutely to be investigated urgently. You should at the very least have a carotid artery Doppler scan. Do not be dismissed. This is serious.

StiffyBing · 28/02/2022 08:31

Oddly, it's very unlikely to be ocular in origin.

RampantIvy · 28/02/2022 08:31

Glad you went to A and E. I hope it is nothing serious Flowers

SmallElephants · 28/02/2022 08:35

Well done op. Hope u feel better soon

Rubyupbeat · 28/02/2022 08:36

This happened to me 5 years ago, luckily I live near enough to Moorfields, my husband drove me there. It was a small clot in the eye, it gradually dispersed, but I had to go for 5 follow ups.
Please don't leave it, it could be any number of things.

oakleaffy · 28/02/2022 08:36

@Chloesss

Please go to an eye hospital if you are lucky enough to live near one.

Or A&E with urgency

If you had scintillations and vibrant moving particles, oscillating and shimmering in an arc, it could be a migraine, but blackness could be something serious which needs urgent attention

You need an expert to look at your retinas via specific equipment.

Good luck

I'm registered blind. My surgery is too far to walk to. I get a taxi and it costs £3.80. But, you need urgent assessment rather than a GP. Good luck. I hope its something easy to put right.

I once had a husband who had the same amount of compassion and ability to care for his wife... note the word 'once'!

Maray1967 · 28/02/2022 08:37

This could be serious- happened to someone I know. Was a small clot in the brain and the friend was scanned in case it had been a minor stroke.
He should not leave you alone.

Mumdiva99 · 28/02/2022 08:37

Good to see the update. I hope it's nothing serious. Good luck.

Thirkettle · 28/02/2022 08:39

Well, he's shown his true colours there hasn't he.

Bagelsandbrie · 28/02/2022 08:39

@Chloesss

Thanks everyone, I am at A&E as told by 111. My vision is almost back to normal but very worried as I was completely blind in one eye for a while.

Fingers crossed it’s nothing serious. And I made my husband stay home and look after baby

X

Hope you get seen quickly and it’s something easily treatable.

Sorry I should have listened to all your comments before I responded I'm glad you're at the hospital and that your vision is coming back. Good luck and I'm sorry for not listening to all your messages

NoSleepNoSleep · 28/02/2022 08:44

I'm not sure I'd expect my husband to stay off if I had a medical issue, my husband's work would be pretty pissed off. He had to take our son to hospital with breathing difficulties a couple of months back (we have a baby who is exclusively breastfed so I'd of had to take them and stay overnight, not practical), his work were not impressed, even given the seriousness of the issue! I cant imagine "my wife needs me to take her to the doctors" would wash (he's a teacher). I'd get a taxi if you need to go to the doctors, if it is then turns out to be serious you could call him to get the baby.

UniversalAunt · 28/02/2022 08:44

@Chloesss Really relieved that you are in A&E to be seen soon.
Hope all goes well.
When you can, please let us know how you got on.

Ohbuggeritsme · 28/02/2022 08:44

So glad you're at the hospital @Chloesss.
This happened to me a few years ago, vision went in my eye, a good few hours later my face went droopy and went to A&E and turned out I'd had TIA. I was treated very quickly and kept in a few days, absolutely fine now.
Could absolutely be one of those things that cannot be explained, but it really is best to her it checked out. You've done the right thing.
Please do check in when you can and let us know how you got on Flowers

Going blind in one eye is a serious emergency. Sometimes work just has to suffer.
Francescaisstressed · 28/02/2022 08:46

You need medial attention ASAP.
It could be something very simple, but could be much more serious conditions and could get worse the longer you take to attend.
Sending love - please go and checked

PaddleBoardingMomma · 28/02/2022 08:49

Thank god you made him stay home and went to a&e! You absolutely did the right thing.

I honestly can't imagine a situation where I'd literally go blind in one eye and my DH would still go to work, really odd response in my opinion. I hope he isn't always as stupid and insensitive towards you!

Ragruggers · 28/02/2022 08:51

Go to A and E now,TIA.You will seen n the stroke unit.Do not drive. If not we were told to call 999 if you are unable to be taken to hospital by your husband.Act now.Scary I know.Good luck
