What's your aim for 2008?

Mine is to enjoy running for the whole of 10k rather than just the middle 20 minutes - and it would be great to do the distance in under an hour but I'm not overly hopeful in that respect

I'm still here of anyone running. I've not run now for 4 weeks due to a dodgy knee which isn't really improving. I'm proper depressed about it TBH.

DRnortherner

book says
signs aching throbbing or tenderness along inside of shin. painful to touch. worst at start of run and may ease as muscles warm up.
painful straight after run, but eases until next time

avoid it
beginners are particularly susceptible as doing too much too soon encourages shin splits.
run on forgiving ground. use correct shoes. strenghten and stretch tendons and muscles in the front of leg.

treat it
avoid down hill, run on grass and rest as necessary. if persistent, don't run through pain.
ice sore areas 3x a day

hope it helps

OrmIrian · 28/05/2008 12:26

I have hurt my extensor tendons apparently. Last Friday. Was a bit better on Sunday so I went for another 7 miler which was a mistake it seems. But I will let it rest until next weekend and see how it goes

HarrogateMum · 25/07/2008 12:12

is anyone still on this thread?

I am training for a 10k in September. I am not very fast! But trying hard...any runners still out there who can motivate me? My problem is that if I run on the flat I can do 10 minute miles but if live in a village at the bottom of a hill and the only way out is up the hill.....hence I run VERY slowly up it and end up with 11 minute miles as an average which makes me think I am never going to improve!

muppetgirl · 17/08/2008 17:15

HI, just wondering if this thread is still going as I'm looking for felow runners to chat with!

Didn't want to start a new thread to be told that there was one already happening!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 17/08/2008 17:21

Hi muppetgirl - I check in occasionally but it seems a bit dead here at the moment - some of the regulars went and got themselves pregnant

OP posts:
muppetgirl · 17/08/2008 18:19

Hi Saggermakersbottomknocker -great name btw
How dare they go and get pregnant!!!!!

I started running around 3, 31/2 months ago with a personal trainner as I was still having some problems 'down there' from having my second boy (now 9 months) e started very slowly doing run 1 min walk 1 min as the consutlant said I had to exercise as if I'd never exercised before. I have just run ealrier today 9.27k in 1hr which isn't going to break any world records but I'm feeling a massive sense of achievement at now being able to run an hour. I am doing my first run on Sept 14th which is a 4 mile fun run over horsejumps!!! Dh also entered me into a 5k race the week before which I know I can do it's a question of logistics with the kids as it's in London.

I am lvoeing running, I haven't done any since I was at school and that was all cross country over hill and dale so I prefer to run outdoors though I am going to have to use a treadmill at the gym as the nights are getting darker -I run on a Sunday, not a problem but then on Wed eves after dh has got home form work which is generally never before 8pm.

My personal trainer also has a thing about runnning up and down stairs and I am currently able to do 20 mins up 2 flights (I have a 3 storey house so 2 sets!!!) interdesperesed with press ups, burpees, situps etc.

Spell checked version!!!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 17/08/2008 18:51

I did my first 10k in an hour (just) and the last one in 1hr 6 - blame being 5 years older and not enough training. There's no way I'll do less than an hour again. The furthest I've ever 'raced' is 8 miles and it was tough.

I really enjoy running too - you have to really don't you? I never run in the gym though; I don't feel comfortable on the treadmill. I've done 5k this morning and now my running buddy is back from her holidays we'll be looking to get back up to 10k - knee permitting.

I'm just starting up again after a long bout of Glandular Fever, been ill for about 6 months. Taking it very slowly to begin with. I love running too, missed it so much.

muppetgirl · 17/08/2008 19:13

I agree with the gym not being great. It's just so boring although I will be watching tv whilst running but I'd rather be out and about.
Galndular fever -that's tough is't it, my son has just been tested for it but it came back negative. He's seeing the paediatrician on Tues as he's still not well and this has been going on for 4 months now.

Does anyone else find thier motivation just goes sky high when they're running (or is it me?) The house has never been so tidy and I am finally getting more organised and I am putting this all down to running

I am also loving the fact that my clothes fit me really well since I had ds 2.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 19/08/2008 00:12

arf @ inconsiderate pregnant regulars!

I am no longer pregnant , instead I have a 12 week old baby and have just started running again.

I did a slow, flat mile last week and a very hilly 1k yesterday (sorry for mixed distances!) and now my legs are very sore. But it's great to be out again. I'm going to ease my way back up to 5k and take it from there, I'm not sure I want to be racing 10k's and it's doubtful I'll have the time to do regular long runs anyway (4DCs and the eldest is only 6yo).

And I still haven't spent the £250 SweatyBetty vouchers I won here when I was newly pregnant. Winter running shoes will be on the list...!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 24/08/2008 13:24

I'm going to blog my runs here as I need to get out of my comfort zone now The Knee has improved.

Sunday last - 30 min slow
Monday - gym
Tuesday - rest
Wednesday - 30 min slow
Thursday - gym
Friday - 45 mins (should have been a steady run but ended up being a 25 and a 20 punctuated by 10 minutes sheltering from torrential downpour)
Sat - rest
Sunday - 33 mins (out and back run - did the second part 1 1/2 minutes faster than the first)

I'm not thinking about distance or speed at the moment, more time on my feet.

moondog · 24/08/2008 16:19

Ah, have found you all.
I'm still at it and managing 5km a day, thanks to treadmil in our rented apartment in Bangladesh where I am for 6 weeks.

Humidity is killing me though. I can knock off this no problems at home (UK) but here, gasp like fish out of water. V. depressing.

babydriver · 24/08/2008 22:44

Hello, can I pop into this thread from time to time? I'm not a regular runner (at least up till now) but needed an excuse to make sure I made it out of the house for some exercise so I've signed myself up for a 10k run at the end of Sept. I've been following the training schedule, which has helped to build my fitness and motivation, but still reckon running all the way round will be a pretty big challenge for me. So far my longest run all in one go has been 25 mins tho' 30 is on the schedule tomorrow, and I've done 35 on walk/run intervals. Absolutely no idea about distance covered!

Is anyone else doing one of the Cancer Research 10Ks?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/08/2008 08:46

Yes - everyone welcome. I did the Weston Park 10k last year - really enjoyed it despite not doing enough training. Which one are you doing? The info said Weston was flat except for one hill - they didn't say the hill was looooonnnngggg!

OP posts:
TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 25/08/2008 08:59

Good morning all. Moondog, 5k in humidity is good work, I can't run in humidity or temps over 75F . Saggars, that was a good week. Hello babydriver.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/08/2008 09:27

Oh I don't do hot/humid either. I like warm light rain, no wind mind. [fussy bugger]

Actually that reminds me I need an excuse to shop winter running gear.

OP posts:
TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 25/08/2008 10:33

I ran for nearly 20 minutes. But it wasn't very far. I was very good on the warm up/warm down though, I can be a bit negligent about doing that properly.

How often does everyone change their running shoes btw?

sfxmum · 25/08/2008 12:51

is this back up?

am still going out a few times a week but so far not doing more than 3 miles each times sometimes less. am also ttc

that seems to be holding me back a bit as I don't really feel like pushing it or entering races 'just in case' just feel like marking time until the mythical 'after baby'

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/08/2008 16:14

Yes - it's had the kiss of life sfxmum Good luck with ttc.

just quickly posting so I don't lose thread!

moondog · 25/08/2008 17:02

Ah, thank you for kind words re humidity. it is unbelievable and doesn't help that the twerp who is often in gym with me wants to put A/C off and run with towel muffledaround neck.

I am sooo looking forward to seeing how I get on in cool Welsh mountain air when i get back to UK next week.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/08/2008 18:50

You couldn't bring us some sun back could you moondog? It's been a grim August.

OP posts:
Wallace · 25/08/2008 18:58

My update:

Did a 10k race yesterday and time was 59:19. Which is okay, but I really didn't enjoy it. There was a strong headwind which may have had something to do with it it. But also my period started today and I always find I am a bit sluggish when due on. Does anyone else find this?

I have been running with a running club and have recently started going to the night which is not the beginners' night. It is great because we do stuff like interval trainign and fartlek.

We did a 5k time trial the other night and my time was 26.04 Almost 2 minutes faster than 6 weeks ago

at moondog looking forward to the welsh mountain air!
