What's your aim for 2008?

Mine is to enjoy running for the whole of 10k rather than just the middle 20 minutes - and it would be great to do the distance in under an hour but I'm not overly hopeful in that respect

I am taking inspiration from all of you so far this week I have been doing 3 miles every other day.
well chuffed with my modest start

mamamoo · 12/04/2008 11:15

SFX - every other day is fab..I am taking inspiration from you! My problem is lack of consistency. This week I have ran a 5 mile and a 7 mile (both long runs for me - 7m is the longest in a year in fact but I am trying to get my mileage up to do 8 miles in the Edin mar relay in a month or so time). I really would like to do 3 or 4 runs a week a week but struggle with DH either being out, or a total lack of motivation eg not being able to bring myself to run in the rain...which is just about every day at the moment!). I used to run with a womens group who met once a week for speedwork but they meet at 6 which is too early for me now as DH isn't back in by then. Running with a group is always motivational

mamamoo time is the biggest problem for me dd is nearly 3 and I am sahm I usually go out before dh leaves home at 8.30 or so means setting the alarm but hey.
it is so much better in the summer, also am restricted with time/ distance until I get faster, but can try harder at the weekend.

am actually trying to get fit for another baby, fingers crossed,

Wallace · 13/04/2008 22:12

that sounds good sfx.

currantbun - I love to run alone too, it is the only time I ever get alone but I think it will help me get motivated again having a definite once a week run.

I went orienteering yesterday and it was fantastic fun The course I did was only 1.2 km but I was knackered It is so much harder running off the path!

Everyone been watching (or running?) the marathon today? I think I will aim for 2010 because ds2 will be in nursery by then giving me more time to run.

Pidge · 14/04/2008 18:31

Rather enjoyed watching the marathon with my feet up patting my not inconsiderable bump (despite not even being 4 months pregnant yet) and feeling rather pleased not to be out there doing it as I was last year.

Got my online entry in for 2009 though! Am rather hoping I don't get a place, as baby will only be 6 months old, but I don't want to lose my '5 times rejected in a row' possible place, which would be 2012!

Wallace · 14/04/2008 21:01

LOL pidge, will be sods' law if you get a place

I went to my running club tonight, but I was 3 minutes late and they had gone without me. Boo hoo

Nevermind, I went on a 3 mile run round a local loch instead

sfxmum · 15/04/2008 11:35

Pidge much respect for Marathon although I always felt it borders on lunacy but every year when it comes around I just think maybe just maybe...

wallace I ran by the river early in the morning and I always find it surprising just how nice cheerful and considered those out early can be, it's a different world how odd

mamamoo · 15/04/2008 16:49

Good for you Pidge. I lost my 5 years in a row place as forgot to apply when dd was born - would have got place for the following year. I applied too online on Sun tho to be quite honest I dont know why as I hate running in the dark over winter and can never get myself out in the rain. They should change it to an autumn marathon!! Am planning 6 miles tonight.....

OrmIrian · 16/04/2008 14:52

I didn't watch it but the times of the front runners were amazing. I would say 'inspiring' but it wouldn't take inspiration for me to run 26 miles at that speed....just a miracle! The more I run the more impossible it seems to run that distance! Did anyone see that article in the Independent about marathon training last week? Relying more on weight training and less on running, and eating a high protein diet rather than a carb-heavy one.Interesting. Still seemed like damned hard work mind you.

Managed 7.5 miles on Sunday. Nearly killed me! Didn't time it - had to stop for 5 mins halfway round to rescue a bumble bee from the road . But roughly 75 minutes.

eternalstudent · 16/04/2008 15:00

Can I join you? I hate running but after watching the London M I felt a strange urge to do it.

Went for my first attempt on Monday and I have never known pain in the butt region like it!

sfxmum · 17/04/2008 18:59

hello all

what I am really enjoying, about this going back to running business, is that I start needing it quite badly and helps my motivation to get up early.
last time was Tuesday and I can't wait to go tomorrow

mamamoo · 21/04/2008 22:43

Hello all. Managed 9 miles on Sat but no motivation to get out the door for a 20 min run tonight! How are you getting on eternal student?

OrmIrian · 22/04/2008 14:11

I am going to start running 4 times a week from this weekend. DS#1 wants to run so I am going to take him out on saturday afternoons - OK, it'll only be a mile but all helps I suppose.

mamamoo · 01/05/2008 19:09

Has this thread died??????????????

Its like watching tumbleweed on here!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 01/05/2008 20:53

I'm here but not running (and therefore not posting) as I have the aptly named 'runner's knee. Apparently

sfxmum · 02/05/2008 15:06

hi all still running except this week which seemed to be pouring at the only time I could go out - tips for running in the rain wearing glasses
last week was every other day which made me feel fantastic

am taking it slowly but pleased that I finally can do 5k without much effort really need to push myself now

OrmIrian · 02/05/2008 15:19

I'm still around. Running is nearly killing me atm but never mind. I blame the menopause - endless periods = no energy. Also just started cutting back on the carbs to lose a bit round the middle and that always makes me exhausted to start with.

sfxmum · 02/05/2008 15:21

I need to cut more carbs too mostly due to PCOS and wanting another baby
but not giving up my porridge and pasta

oh the menopause am starting to feel it closing in

OrmIrian · 20/05/2008 08:05

Anyone still here?

Managed 7 miles on Sunday and managed it with ease. Thankfully things are improving.

sfxmum · 21/05/2008 09:58

hi that is great Omrlrian, so far I have only managed 3 miles in one go but on the plus side I have been running regularly during the week average between 2-3 miles only.
planning on longer run this weekend

I am seeing results and changes in my body which is nice also doing some Pilates although not as regularly

OrmIrian · 21/05/2008 13:16

Hello there sfxmum! Glad someone else is here too .

It is surprising how much it changes your body. I have been totally amazed by how the difference started to really show as soon as I started to manage regular longer runs.

DrNortherner · 21/05/2008 13:20

I can run again on Thursday after a 2 week break due to shin splints. I'm terrified it will hurt again when I run.

Any tips?

OrmIrian · 21/05/2008 13:24

Ouch! Only thing I can suggest is to take it slowly and stop when/if it starts to hurt. I had them for a while when I first started but not for long.

Mostly I run through my aches and pains these days but luckily they don't seem as bad as they were. I know that's very irresponsible advice so please don't take it Not much help, sorry.

sfxmum · 21/05/2008 17:08

oh great more people around
when I started I read the running made easy book which gave advice on warm up etc.
but my favourite is the runners world book, fantastic advice on self help and prevention.

can check what it says later but mostly start slow warm up keep going regularly until you get stronger seem s to be the gist of it, will check self help bit
