For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

I would like to be able to praise the title but I don't get it...Dh, would, I think.
Wombling, your toothache sounds horrendous, much sympathy.
Franny, look away now- Toot, thanks for garlic ear tip, it worked. Chocolate biscuit cake? Wrap sandwiches? Ice cream? Will you be staying up all night crotcheting?
I have had banana muesli (the kind you soak overnight, lovely), dates, pumpkin, ginger, celery and carrot soup, an apple. And juice.

SauerKraut · 22/10/2007 15:58

Ah! Just seen title explanation. I missed out on a lot of certain kinds of music due to a rather restrictive and narrow- minded upbringing, and am still catching up!

FrannyandZooey · 22/10/2007 16:01

100 avert your eyes (god there are not many things we can talk about without upsetting one or other of us, are there?)

we have been to an owl show, it was fab

OP posts:
Boco · 22/10/2007 16:13

I think it's ok actually, 100x doesn't mind owls because of their width.

I'm feeling very frustrated. My dad just called. I asked him to lend me a small amount of money. He said no, he can't afford to, then went on to tell me he's planning a trip to the Caribbean next year. And has just bought an egloo. I feel like a teenager when i talk to him, i'm too old to be trying to borrow money from my parents anyway, but i've never done it before - with either of them, never ever asked. Now i feel stupid and cross. Hmph.

DD and her friend are playing a game involving screaming and it hurts.

PossumIsMunchingPumpkins · 22/10/2007 16:57

I love the thread title!

can I ask a non-fruit and veg related question? Please, humour me, I need to draw upon your collective wisdom.

DS is but a year old and I am up to my ankles in toys, 95% of which are generous gifts from all and sundry. By the time he's three, I'll be up to my kness and from then on it will be the Stevie Smith poem, waving not drowning.
Do they neeeed toys? Is it all a marketing gimmick? How did human society evolve before we had toys per se? Are they essential to brain development?

If I chuck, what should I keep, IYSWIM?

DS seems to ignore the lot and just bobs about opening doors, drawers and cupboards, and knicking the remote control, however craftily we conceal it.
What would a 10-10 toy be if it exists?

Maybe this should be a separate thread but i want the 10-10 angle

PossumIsMunchingPumpkins · 22/10/2007 17:11

Boco, sorry to hear about your annoying dad, what's an egloo???

Boco · 22/10/2007 17:54

Toys - you have to pass on what they stop playing with or grow out of or you'll suffocate. We've asked for bunk beds as dds christmas present this year and hope we can get away with that. There are some really lovely things that they've always loved - like a wooden double decker bus from habitat with people in - that's falling apart from use, but an awful lot of rubbish.

An egloo is a hen house, it's a total gimmick and costs a fortune. hang on...

costs £400 for a small plastic hen house! hahaha

fullmoonfiend · 22/10/2007 18:02

gosh possum - franny will come back and tell you all about heuristic play
At that age my boys were both firmly train fans and we had lots of wooden train track.
Mostly they seemed to like things which rolled or stacked or best of all, playing with 'stuff' like wooden spoons, pots, fircones, necklaces, bells, my keys (back to heuristic play....)

MrsCarrot · 22/10/2007 18:02

I am having tofu, brown rice, and cabbage, shitake mushroom, carrot, mange tout and baby corn stir fry. Dh is in Manchester so I get a vegi dinner.

Boco - can't believe how much they cost!

fullmoonfiend · 22/10/2007 18:03

oh and they both loved a very noisy but enduring music centre thingy which had a zylophone, bells, drum and rain sticky things.

ahundredtimes · 22/10/2007 18:03

Also I think they tend to play with what is there, so you definitely get to chose what they like. Mine mostly played with bits of tat about the place at one, but toys did seem to come into their own when they were a bit older - my ds's liked 'people' best really, and so playmobile etc.

I'd go with what you like best, consider most useful etc and charity shop the rest.

DS1 has made supper. All on his own. DD has been his sous chef. Actually that was a pre-taste preen, but who cares, he tried. Is Singapore fried rice with ginger and prawns.

fullmoonfiend · 22/10/2007 18:04

I feel very tired and drained today and a bit weepy (oh, hello PMT)
Your dinner sounds gorgeous Mrs C. We are having roast lamb and lots of veg as I am dearly in need of comfort food today.

zippitippitoes · 22/10/2007 18:07

ok bad mother alert...dd1 has just had her first day as an intern in westminster so i rang her up to accuse her of nicking my mobile phone charger

so we had an argument on the phone during whioch i said i'm fed up woth people taking my stuff etc etc

and she said she was fed up with being accused

so now i have found it in my bedroom

do i tell her that's whre i found it and aplogise profusely or pretend it was in the living room when i actually thopught i'd left it in the kitchen and thus imply that ds moved it

ahundredtimes · 22/10/2007 18:25

Oh and FMF earlier, I too was chilled by the thought of dh going around searching what I'd written, or indeed joining in incognito. Too chilled to comment.

Boco - am annoyed on your behalf too.

MrsC - delicious food.

Zipp - annoying and tricky.

Right I must say goodbye now. Have a lovely week everyone.

FrannyandZooey · 22/10/2007 18:27

Byeeeeeee 100

have fun in Venice

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 22/10/2007 18:29

oh yes venice sounds lovely have a nice time

Boco · 22/10/2007 18:35

Have a lovely week 100, and let us know about the games when you get back x

FrannyandZooey · 22/10/2007 18:46

Right am going to attempt to go through the thread and reply properly

Wombling how is your toothache?

I am missing 3andnomore, I wish she would pay us a visit more often and I am worried that we have upset her and I hope she comes back

FunkyGlass, are you sure you are really adding only 1 heaped tbsp of veg? They are talking about the cooking measurement type tbsp, I am sure, which is actually tiny - go and have a look. A 1 tbsp serving of carrots on a plate would look really odd to me. Are you having a bit more than you realise perhaps?

FMF I have to admire his nerve, I must say.

Boco glad to hear the chests are clear. Bad news about half term and no transport. Have you got thrilling things to do indoors? Can we help you think of some?

Avi I am not Greeny I haven't got a habit of using foul and hideous metaphors, and I don't jangle

Littlerach no idea of your portions, you will have to check the portionometer linked to in the OP and then guess wildly like the rest of us Yes they do stay up late don't they? I used to go to bed EARLY before I started hanging around with these caffeine freaks

Possum oh my word. Can I email you my Document please? Basically, no, they don't need any toys (although loads of toys are fab and can really enhance both their play and your own involvement with their play IMO). There was an experiment where they took all the toys away from a group of children and they drooped around for a day or two, complaining of boredom, then suddenly and quite spontaneously developed startlingly detailed and imaginative games with household things like cutlery, and natural objects like pebbles, leaves etc. Children have always played - it's only more recently in humanity's development that we have felt the need to give them plastic crap to do this with. The official 10 / 10 toy is a treasure basket

Zippi, honestly? You obviously do it a LOT so I think you should take it on the chin and own up, and apologise and make a resolution to not assume someone has nicked your stuff. Or is there another side to this? Does she really nick your stuff?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 22/10/2007 18:48

My 10 / 10 day:

after vast breakfast of fruitery I had baked beans and butter beans for lunch, and have made huge leek, carrot, mushroom, bean and corn stew with carrots from the garden

am cooking things for lunch tomorrow - NQC and boys are coming - I have just overcooked some rice (while posting on here ) and I am sure I read somewhere that if you OVERcook rice it is actually bad for you. Or something. I may google.

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 22/10/2007 18:52

i've tried to ring her but no answer now

ds does take stuff

but i am in a very tense mood today

and i think it is just me bein a teenager tbh...it is teenage dating syndrome i think...ie people's numbers on my phone and no shows etc...i have just worked this out

FunkyGlassSlipupandyouredead · 22/10/2007 18:55

Ah, I mixed up my tablespoon and 'serving' spoon so perhaps I am doing better than I thought after all

FrannyandZooey · 22/10/2007 18:57

almost always better to graciously say sorry, even if it wasn't entirely your fault (I need reminding of this constantly)

sets a good example to your children as well of course

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 22/10/2007 18:58

Funky I didn't think it could be 1 tbsp of carrots - thats about 1 slice isn't it? I;m not going mad, am I, they do mean 1 heaped tbsp as in the sort of tbsp you use to measure baking powder etc?

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 22/10/2007 18:59

i do feel in a very up and down and irritable mood i'm wondering if it's pmt

FrannyandZooey · 22/10/2007 19:03
