Have just been for mine

not the funnest way to spend 10 minutes, but hey! don;t need another one for 3 years...

also, here's a tip if the nurse has trouble finding your cervix, mine seemed to have wandered off, lie on your left side..

was over and done with very quickly and with complete and utter sensitivity and discretion.

i know it is a bit yuck, but it is important, and you can always take a friend with for moral support.

so, if you have been meaning to book in for yours, get it booked !

I actually find the brush more painful than the spatula as they have to get the brush right inside the cervix opening-well that's what she said! Whereas the spatulas just skirt round the edges- that's why brushes are better.

anyway, it's all over on about 30 seconds, so not too bad!

I was a bit overdue for mine but as a friend has just had an abnormal result, I made an appointment with the practice nurse about a month ago. I also see her for my asthma, so that was a bit embarrassing, but thought Id rise above it for the sake of hubbie and children. She made me feel WORSE cos she said, "come on, lets get this over with". She then went on to say how hers was way overdue because she's too embarrassed to get one of her colleagues to do it and she doesn't like going to sexual health clinic in case she knows someone there! To make matters worse, my results came back today and they couldn't report on it.....why???? The letter said to make another appointment in September but why would I have to wait that long? I've got to go through all that and the wait again and Im shi**ing myself. Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/07/2008 21:38

poor you helsbels - sounds very unprofessional of the nurse - possibly they didn't get enough cells to test/look at - I think they leave it a few months as a matter of course before doing the test again - not sure why, but I was told that if they hadn't got enough in my last test they'd call me back in a couple of months - am sure someone better informed will oblige with info !

Helsbels4 · 04/07/2008 21:42

Thanks MaryAnn, that makes me feel a bit better. I keep reading and re-reading the letter to see if it says something was wrong but then I am the world's worst worrier! Suppose I'll just have to wait and try again.

RubySlippers · 08/07/2008 13:33

time for another bump

i had mine yesterday

no discomfort whatsoever, all done in about 15 seconds

VictorianSqualor · 08/07/2008 13:39

Ah. I've got to have one now DS2 is a bit older, but my periods still haven't returned properly, anyone know how you do it then?

I'm there tomorrow for DS2's injections so can have a word with the nurse I suppose.

I know I really have to have it done after the results before DS were bad.

Sorry, I posted before the forgot about this thread!!

The metal ones have a protruding bit that can stick into you.

BUT - the plastic ones also have a fault. There is no nobbly bit at the end of the wheel so it can be spun right off...

At work we always tell the students to test the speculums because in one session they had to chuck out a whole box because they were faulty.

The problem with the letters is that they never tell you why you are being recalled. It is more likely they have not taken enough cells/ HCP has taken a sample of discharge/ lost sample/ broken slide etc, than it to actually be abnormal cells.

I have mine tomorrow. And perversely I'm quite excited!!!

I wont do it.

Bumdiddley · 01/08/2008 20:40

OH MY GOD. Had mine today.

The nurse did it in about 10 seconds I shit you not..

She did run the (plastic)speculum under a tap, which is just wrong!

I think I feel better about them now because I know what is supposed to happen.

rebelmum1 - Why? Have you ever had one?

DA - Where are you? Realistically any women can get cervical cancer if she has had sex even once.

she ran the speculum under the tap ? to warm it I guess ? would that not be ok - I immediately thought not, but it's only warm water, expect someone will know.

juneybean · 01/08/2008 22:58

I just turned 23 and haven't had one yet! When is the usual age?

anastasia74 · 02/08/2008 10:48

just booked my smear for next wednesday- hurray. Not had one since 2002. Been sticking my head in the ground, until now. Watched the programme on the girl with terminal cervical cancer in her early 20's. So, that was a reality check. I thought after having my daughter, with everyone looking at my nether regions I would'nt be that fussed anymore, but seem to get worse as I get older for some reason.
