Have just been for mine

not the funnest way to spend 10 minutes, but hey! don;t need another one for 3 years...

also, here's a tip if the nurse has trouble finding your cervix, mine seemed to have wandered off, lie on your left side..

was over and done with very quickly and with complete and utter sensitivity and discretion.

i know it is a bit yuck, but it is important, and you can always take a friend with for moral support.

so, if you have been meaning to book in for yours, get it booked !

MaryAnn - there is no need to run a plastic speculum under water - they are not cold.

If yo run it under water it is not longer sterile - some people may not like it.

I suspect she may have done it in lieu of lubricant!!

juneybean - if you have had sex, even once you need a smear.

If you are a 50 year old virgin you don't need one.

MKG · 02/08/2008 17:38

I had my second one this year at my first pre-natal checkup (routine for first appointments, here in US) It was nothing. I've been having 1 a year since I was 17 so it's not really a big deal.

Although I was surprised to see that now they recommend girls start to go see a OB/GYN between the ages of 13 and 15 whether they've had sex or not.

SlothyMcFrothy · 02/08/2008 17:41

I have been asked back for another smear test(last one 6 months ago and result was ok)Not sure why tbh,all i can think of is that it took 3 (different) attempts to get sufficant cells .

MaryAnnSingleton · 03/08/2008 12:55

BumDiddly, of course -yes it wouldn't be cold, perhaps she just did it out of habit ? but silly of her...

anastasia74 · 06/08/2008 20:14

Well, I went and finally got it done. Not at all uncomfortable from how I remember it in 02.

They use a brush type thing now which I hardly felt and she explained that they also introduce some clear liquid at the same time as taking the smear - to eliminate any blood that may be present. Apparently this used to spoil some of smears taken, so not a problem anymore. She even gave me a paper sheet for my modesty. So, anybody still dithering, honestly its not that uncomfortable.

RubySlippers · 07/08/2008 21:23

results came back well within the 10 weeks they said as well

MrsBates · 07/08/2008 21:26

Any one needing handholding?

Please book and get one done

olivo · 19/08/2008 20:44

I am going for mine on Friday. i am unusually nervous this time; about 12 years ago, after my very first one, i had to have treatment, then follow ups every 3 months for a while, then 6 months, yearly and eventually back onto 3 years. I am not quite due one yet but hope to begin ttc in a couple of months and wanted to make sure everything was ok.
I am convinced they are going to find something wrong this time.

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/08/2008 15:27

try not to worry,we'll be thinking of you xxx

olivo · 20/08/2008 20:26

thanks.last time i had the results within three weeks so fingers crossed....

BoysAreLikeDogs · 20/08/2008 20:28

Good girl

clayre · 20/08/2008 20:33

i didnt think this thread still existed, good luck for friday olivo, we'll hold your hand xx

BoysAreLikeDogs · 20/08/2008 20:37

This the one thread I don't mind being resurrected

Goober · 20/08/2008 20:38

Today is the first time I have come accross this thread. Mine has been due for 6 weeks and I've been avoiding making the appointment.
I am scared.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 20/08/2008 20:46

Goober, I have recently had a smear, and was pleasantly surprised.

The old fashioned wooden, scratchy lollipop stick has been replaced by a kind of soft bottle-brush affair, much 'nicer' IYSWIM.

Please don't be frightened, make the appointment and your hand will be held.

Go on.

clayre · 20/08/2008 20:49

Aww goober isnt the best way to spend 10 mins but wasnt too bad, i was surprised when i had mine in december and that was my 1st, i had been ignoring letters for about 10 years, please make the appointment

Goober · 20/08/2008 20:52

This is the first I have avoided. I have been having them since I was 16. This time I am worried. It doesn't help that I have put on weight and am very conscies of my bigger body now.

ByTheSea · 20/08/2008 20:52

I had pre-cancerous cells once (successfully treated) so I always go. I got a notice a couple of weeks ago and booked an appointment for the week the DC go back to school.

olivo · 21/08/2008 08:55

Goober, this is the first i have felt nervous about too, though i think in my case its because I am convinced things will have 'changed' since i had my dd.
go on, book an appt, i'll hold your hand You know you must....

Goober · 21/08/2008 10:38

Hmm.

I'm off on holiday tomorrow. There is a stack of things to organise when I get back, that is one of them. I'll deal with it when I get home.

Maybe...................

cmotdibbler · 21/08/2008 10:43

Goober - ring and make that appointment now ! Don't wait till you come back off holiday to make it, as you know you'll just dither then too...

The nurse isn't going to judge you on your weight - they've seen all sorts of things.
