Feels like something is stuck in my throat

Help? I'm really fed up now. It's been 4 weeks of feeling like this. Literally feels like something is stuck in my throat. I tend to need to burp slot. I've been treated for acid reflux and it's still here and driving me mad. And to be honest really starting to worry me. Could it be hayfever? Though piriton is having no affect on me either. I've never had hayfever before but I have no other symptoms if it is.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance

Sensation

highlandcoo · 03/07/2020 21:57

Spideymom I had no pain at all. No heartburn either actually. It was all a throat problem. Turns out I have a hiatus hernia and GERD.

I think this is going to take some time to improve but try the restricted diet and take the meds and try not to panic. You've had it looked at and they haven't found anything too serious so that's all good.

Keep posting and keep in touch. There isn't a quick fix for this unfortunately but I do think it will get better in time.

highlandcoo · 03/07/2020 22:03

I used to take a couple of paracetemol occasionally to make my throat more comfortable. Not a good thing to do continually but now and then seemed OK. Not nurofen which is an irritant.

SpideyMom · 03/07/2020 23:24

thanks. Its made me feel better that others don't get the pain too. Ive been obsessively checking the back of my throat this evening as it feels so real that there is a film over it.

I need to read this book, but my diet is small anyway. Well at the moment at least.

I want to blame anxiety but I dont feel like i am worrying. Though I wouldnt be surprised if I've just got used to constantly worrying

Update
So I’ve just had my appointment with ent, camera was really not bad at all, hardly even felt it. Said he could see irritation caused by acid reflux, so 3 months of lansoperazole twice daily and gaviscon advance 4 times daily for a month. I’ve also just brought myself a wedge pillow too so 🤞it will start to settle down. How are you feeling now spideymom ?

SpideyMom · 07/07/2020 20:24

@Proudnana3 I really pleased to hear its nothing serious. How did you feel?
Erm to be honest i still feel it. But I was saying to my mom earlier when I am busy or occupied I dont feel it as much and I'm definitely not consumed by it.
I just want it to go. Lansoperazole and gaviscon aren't working for me yet. I suppose its still early days?
I'm back to work tomorrow so hopefully that will keep me busy. Im just upset that its really bad when I want to relax and chill out and I cant because of it

I was surprised how easy it was, he was really nice and told me he expected to see reflux before he looked just by my symptoms. He did say I should start to feel better in a month, didn’t mention diet or life style changes. He said he doesn’t make the 3 month appointments to check up as most patients don’t turn up or ring in to say they are better and don’t need it. I asked if I could have the odd glass of wine whilst healing I had a big birthday coming up and he said absolutely just avoid anything to strong and expect to maybe feel it a bit more the next day.

SpideyMom · 08/07/2020 08:51

Same. Was your camera through the nose or?

My consultant too didn't mention lifestyle changes or diet but did emphasis reflux and globus in my case.

I'm currently sat in work (my first day back) and I can only feel it slightly. Hopefully this is the road to feeling better

Proudnana3 · 08/07/2020 10:19

I really hope so for both of us, yes just through the nose, I’m trying to just ignore any sensation now as I know it’s not anything to worry about and it should eventually go away.

Autumn101 · 08/07/2020 10:43

Fingers crossed you have a good day Spidey and the worst is over! And I really hope now you’ve had some reassurance and a plan you also start to feel better Proudnana.

I’m not having the best week, feeling of my throat being blocked is constant..... However the children and I are moving back to UK this weekend so packing/sorting/worrying I’m sure isn’t helping! DH is staying here and so I’m in the ‘what if’ mindset and so upset at being apart. I know it’s the right thing but it’s just horrid, also not being able to say goodbye to friends (still in very restricted country) or the DCs schools. Oh and did I mention I have a major phobia of flying?!!

I am desperate to feel better, it’s been 3 months now. Only silver lining is I’ve lost the weight I’ve been struggling to get off for years!

I’ve ordered a reflux friendly recipe book, wedge pillow and some proper probiotics for my return and hoping that and some decent fresh air will eventually get me on the road to recovery

SpideyMom · 08/07/2020 10:50

Mine got worse a few days after have the camera. Which made me even more frustrated as I knew nothing was there.
So far so good today
Fingers crossed for you proudnana3

Oh Autumn101 what a lot you have going on. What a big decision you are making. I hate flying at the best of times. Bless you. Will your DH be joining you at some point. You need to trust you are doing what you feel is right for you and your family. I hope you feel better soon

OP posts:
Autumn101 · 08/07/2020 11:56

DH will be joining us either when he gets a job back in UK or gets made redundant - he thinks that’s looking likely in the next few months which was the major driver to our decision. No information on process or timings in his place, unfortunately integrity is not exactly great where we are and treatment of expats the last few months has been pretty bad......

I’m really hoping a lot of mine is stress/anxiety related and once I’m home it’ll start to settle!

Proudnana3 · 08/07/2020 12:51

I’m sure it is autumn101 sounds like you’re having a tough time, I also hate flying.

Proudnana3 · 09/07/2020 14:01

Hope you’re still feeling better sm, spent the first night with the wedge pillow last night and it was so comfy. Just can’t wait to start feeling better, got to get use to the idea it will take time for the throat to heal.

gamerchick · 09/07/2020 14:09

OP, have you actually made any of the changes suggested throughout this thread? Have you elevated the head of your bed so the stomach acid can't burn your throat? If not, why not?

This is such an established fix. Elevate and follow a low residue diet for a month. Then reintroduce roods slowly to find your triggers.

That's it.

SpideyMom · 09/07/2020 14:55

yes @gamerchick, however in my defense the consultant did not tell me to change my diet or lifestyle, so I have done so myself.
Most of the time lately I am barely eating at all and only drinking water but its still very much there

OP posts:
gamerchick · 09/07/2020 15:59

They don't tell you. You get your diagnosis and do you're own research. Just like they don't tell people they're fat.

Follow the diet to the letter for a month. Sleep on an angle so the stomach acid can't come into your throat. Take your meds. Not eating will make stomach acid worse so try and eat those bland foods.

The sensation will go as your gullet heals. It just takes a while so consistency is key.

I do have sympathies as I've been there myself. I don't think I'll ever get off those sodden meds though tbh.

Proudnana3 · 10/07/2020 08:59

It’s difficult to know what foods are triggering it when you don’t know it’s happening, I think that it the same with you isn’t it spideymom. I have no feeling of reflux, no heartburn, no acid taste and it’s no better or worse from eating the foods classed at risk foods or having a glass of wine. It’s just the annoying sensation in the throat, I do like the wedge pillow though it’s very comfy and stops me sleeping on my front which is apparently bad. Not sure if it’s helping though as like I said I never feel it rising in my throat anyway. I suppose time will tell. Just wanted to ask sm how long were you told you need to take the meds and are you still taking the gaviscon advance? I was told only the first month with both then just the prescribed meds.

gamerchick · 10/07/2020 09:22

The annoying sensation in the throat IS the sign.

The idea is to go low residue until the gullet heals and reintroduce roods a bit at a time. When the gullet heals you will notice triggering foods because you're no longer accustomed to this constant uncomfortable feeling. Then it can be fine tuned.

It's not perfect because nothing is but a lot better once you understand the language.

gamerchick · 10/07/2020 09:24

It's like for me. Before the feeling that something is stuck in my throat, I get a light sore throat. In the past I wouldn't have registered it much but now I know that something's amiss and can usually pin down what set it off before it gets to the stuck in the throat feeling.

Proudnana3 · 10/07/2020 09:55

Too be honest I constantly had a sore throat before the sensation but my allergies were really bad then so put it down to that, I’ve also had a very stressful year ( before lockdown) which I think has added to it, chilliest are the only thing I know for sure upset me. I actually only slightly feel it today and that’s because I’m constantly looking for it. I never really had a lump feeling it’s more a mushy feeling around the dangly bit and sometimes lower down were you swallow. Consultant seemed to know what I meant straight away though as he called it before he even put the camera down so it must be a pretty common thing. I’ve got a big family holiday next week for my birthday so don’t want to not be able to eat and drink what I want , hopefully the meds and pillow will help keep it under control and when I come back back I will cut everything out that they recommend. I did tell the consultant this and he said go and enjoy yourself it might just set you back a few days that’s all. 🤞

gamerchick · 10/07/2020 11:29

Yes, it's exact this. It's an informed choice knowing there might be a miserable few days as a consequence. I've got a sore throat and the irritated cough atm because I discovered proper satsumas. Rather than those awful easy peelers and I indulged. Then I had a couple of boozy nights.

I knew what would happen but also know it won't last when I behave again. The meds can't do it alone.

Watch out for the pillow. It squashes after a while but I put mine under the mattress. I use an old sofa back wrapped in a quilt cover to keep me propped when it's bad. Everything heals pretty quick then.

It's just learning how to live with it.

Autumn101 · 10/07/2020 13:02

I also have had no heartburn symptoms at all just the throat feeling - and it’s constant from the minute I wake up........

Have followed the blandest diet for 8 weeks now and it’s very demoralizing!! Really hoping once my stress levels go down things will improve as it’s miserable.

Proudnana3 · 10/07/2020 15:18

Have you had the camera to check you’re throat for reflux damage autmn101 and how long did you take the reflux meds for? Did they help at all? Stress is going to make the problem a 100 times worse so hopefully once you are settled it will calm down.

Thanks for the advice about the pillow ganerchick I will try it under the mattress, it has only been a couple of nights with it but I have high hopes it’s going to help.

Autumn101 · 10/07/2020 15:28

Yes I had the endoscopy a couple of weeks back which showed GERD and oesophagitis - however I also had stomach polyps from the PPIs I had been taking so have had to move to H2 inhibitors instead...... I’ve only had them for 2.5 weeks so maybe it’ll just take more time??
