Feels like something is stuck in my throat

Help? I'm really fed up now. It's been 4 weeks of feeling like this. Literally feels like something is stuck in my throat. I tend to need to burp slot. I've been treated for acid reflux and it's still here and driving me mad. And to be honest really starting to worry me. Could it be hayfever? Though piriton is having no affect on me either. I've never had hayfever before but I have no other symptoms if it is.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance

I had an endoscopy as I had the something-stuck-in-my-throat sensation. It was fine; it felt like I had soap in my nose. (When I told my daughter this, she claimed never to have had soap go up nose while in the shower). Try to relax OP, it will be over really quickly.

Doctor did tell me they may want to look down my throat at the appointment so I suppose it depends what they think it may be when they see you and what tests they need to do. I’m hoping it’s just done at the first appointment and that’s it. I’m the same as soon as I start thinking about it my throat gets worse. I’ve been sat here trying to think of best way to describe my symptoms as it’s only my throat and the sensation is really hard to explain. Are you still getting chest pains?

SpideyMom · 24/06/2020 17:30

Globus has been mentioned to me but it feels so real. I am really hoping abit of routine will help my get back to normal. I keep trying to tell myself its always been there, but there no way as its driving me mad. I wouldn't have been able to push it aside.

Soap up the nose....forgive me if I'm wrong but its not the most pleasant is it? But then its not awful too. I will just tell myself it will he over soon and needs to be done.

Calling it a lump in my throat is probably wrong. It feels like there's is a lump of mucus stuck there that won't budge but I agree its hard to find the words to describe it. I rarely get other pains, but when I do they are from my sternum area, upwards. It felt like I had a very mild sore throat earlier today, and now I have a sharp feeling in the centre of my chest

I'm a swallowing specialist so see these complaints quite regularly. It definitely sounds like globus which while technically 'isn't a real lump' is actually the throat muscles responding differently due to either reflux or anxiety and the sensation it gives you is a lump.

ENT will do a nasendoscopy (not a sedation endoscopy) and examine the area to exclude any other physical cause for your sensation. Often the act of this being done and the reassurance it brings can alleviate the anxiety and muscle changes and the sensation starts to reduce. Reflux leading to globus should be treated with gaviscon advance (not normal gaviscon). The scope is mildly unpleasant but try to relax and breathe and it will be over with very quickly.

SpideyMom · 24/06/2020 18:22

Thank you. Is it likely to be done on my first appointment or?

I agree with @Pleasedontfeedme I had a similar thing was horrible even went to hospital and had the camera put up my nose and down my throat, worst thing ever and they couldn’t find anything. I think it was tonsil stones, horrible things. Double check by opening your mouth really wide and shine a light to check.

Emmy2020 · 24/06/2020 18:52

Could also be stress? Anxiety? I remember going on holiday and it went away!

SpideyMom · 24/06/2020 18:57

My tonsils look enlarged but have been pretty much since March. I cant see any thing in them though. Stones can cause bad breath cant they? I have asked my son and parents and I dont have a bad smell in my mouth

I worry because most people with Globus say the feeling is in the same place were as mine moves and changes, could that still be Globus? I have been taking gaviscon advance now for a week and to be honest even though the throat sensation is still there I’ve had no more acid feeling in my throat and not burping like I was (tmi) I really struggle to describe the sensation but seem to always come back to trying to swallow a wet crisp 💁🏻‍♀️ I do seem to be swallowing too much as well to see if it’s there still

Normal circumstances - yes. It's done super quick, in and out. During covid though these procedures stopped as they generate aerosols so they may not.

Proudnana3 · 25/06/2020 16:23

Good luck for tomorrow ,hope you get some reassurance and get it all sorted please do let us know haw you get on

SpideyMom · 25/06/2020 16:59

I will. Hopefully I will start to feel better tomorrow. Will definitely report back

Hiya.

So it was pretty much what @hayfeverhellish advised. And it was absolutely fine. I didn't know I was going to have a camera until he mentioned it. I felt myself starting to panic (I think I almost cried) but honestly I barely felt anything. I had no spray or anything. Wasn't given a choice which scared me even more lol. I was asked to do a few things. I was expecting to feel something and choke abit when he asked me to swallow, but nothing. The only slight discomfort I felt was it being taken out. Very much like a PP has said, like soap going up your nose.

But I'm glad it's out the way and delighted no lump was found. I didn't think their was deep down but it felt so real i had to get some reassurance. He has diagnosed Globus which is very common he said, especially with all the worries currently going on, and reflux and said the only thing what will help is Gaviscon Advance. I ended up getting Peptac the other day on the recommendation of my doctor. He wouldn't give me Gaviscon Advanced as too expensive. He wouldn't give Peptac either but its much cheaper to buy and as I dont pay for my prescription he told me to buy this. But ive been told today its not strong enough and needs to be Gaviscon Advanced. Hopefully I can find it cheaper but whilst I'm on furlough (already low paid as it is) I will have to wait until next week to get it once I get paid

Really pleased for you, I’d read gaviscon advance was the best thing for reflux, hope my appointment comes through soon. Hopefully you can relax a bit now

SpideyMom · 26/06/2020 13:03

I still feel it but not as bad. It was just so reassuring to be told no lump was there

Glad you are reassured, hopefully it will ease but you do still need to treat the cause of the reflux which for me was diet/stress. Maybe eliminate all trigger foods first, (google will tell you but it is all the nice stiff!) and then add back in one by one. That is what I did and my reflux only has occasional flare ups now
Knittedfairies · 26/06/2020 17:12

Excellent news!

hayfeverhellish · 26/06/2020 19:59

Really glad it was fine and you've got the best possible outcome, reassurance and nothing to worry about. You might find the sensation reduces over the next few days because you should now look past it and stop worrying so much which will help (your shoulders should start to come down from your ears 😂). Gaviscon advance really is the only thing that works. Our hospital pharmacy is the cheapest but amazon isn't bad either.

Remember reflux and anxiety cause the throat muscles to respond differently as muscle tension and that gives you the lump sensation so try and really look after yourself to relax, sleep, drink fluids, take the gaviscon advance and reduce reflux.

SpideyMom · 26/06/2020 20:31

Does any one know how double action is different to advance? Been looking online and can see there are different ones

OP posts:
Proudnana3 · 27/06/2020 08:40

Think it has to be the advance one. Hayfeveehellish can I ask you if Globus symptoms move around the throat and can also cause the throat to feel extremely dry sometimes and mucusy at others as I’m starting to panic more now.

FluffytheGoldfish · 27/06/2020 09:32

Now the specialist has said you need Gaviscon Advanced you should be able to get it on prescription from your gp. I had an issue over steroid nasal drops but once my gp had the letter from the consultant it was put on my repeat prescription. So check before you pay. (I have had post nasal drip pretty much constantly since my deviated sputum, operation helped my breathing but still, have issues, but they are helped massively by allergy treatments)

SpideyMom · 27/06/2020 10:07

I hope so. The doctor is calling me on Monday to hopefully agree it

OP posts:
SpideyMom · 27/06/2020 11:28

I've read up on the difference and it's theres alot more of the one ingredient in the advanced one.

I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I really dont get much pain compared to others. I think if I got the constant pain and burning I wouldn't have been able to wait so long to get referred.

I feel much better today in my head about it all. Knowing there isn't a physical lump there really has made me less aware of it. I still feel it but no where near to the point I did, where I felt my worrying increasing throughout the day stressing over it. I feel a huge weight has been lifted

OP posts:
hayfeverhellish · 27/06/2020 11:31

@Proudnana3 yes globus can result in the lump sensation moving around. There are so many different muscles in your throat that different combinations of them can be irritated with globus that the feeling can change. A static lump sensation which was unchanging with rest / swallowing etc would be more worrying. Dry, mucousy sensation is also typical of reflux and dryness. Make sure you are drinking plenty, treating the reflux and you could try some steaming with hot water for 2 minutes, 4 times a day. But get checked out to be sure.

Even with my own knowledge and advice, I've suffered with globus and had to be scoped just to double check there wasn't a lump there as it felt so real. It went away almost straight away once I knew.

hayfeverhellish · 27/06/2020 11:32

@SpideyMom so pleased you are already starting to feel to effects of reassurance. That plus gaviscon advance and you will probably be symptom free in no time.
