Today I have accepted that I must end my love affair with white wine.................

I adore it............consume it in bucket fulls and like a gorgeous man it takes over my life and leaves me feeling shite most of the time. Im fat, pasty , dry skinned and constantly tired and now it is starting to affect my work and home life. Yes I function very well and my children are happy and healthy cared for a lot of the time by a nanny as I work 60 to 70 hour weeks but I dont like myself very much and I know I could do so much better without this obession in my life.

So no more wine ( red or white ) or beer etc. Its gin and slimline tonics from now on and only at the weekend. Goes well with the weight watchers plan too.

Anyone else want to join me in suuport ?

Am with you all on this one. Nothing for me for a while, wonder what Xmas is like sober???. Good luck all.

ladylush · 06/11/2007 21:20

Hello coca and monkey - welcome Coca, I don't believe you have less will power than anyone else on the thread. Will power is there if you want to stop badly enough. I tried to stop before but I didn't want to enough iyswim. This time I knew I wanted to so it was easier. Also, having failed before, I could not kid myself anymore that I could stick to drinking one or two nights in the week. I think there is something that works for everyone - it's just a case of finding it. I have a pre-schooler to look after two days a week and a stressful job on the other 3 (plus work one weekend day)and have to concede that alcohol was the quickest and most pleasurable way to unwind BUT this doesn't mean it's the best. I feel groggy/tired the next day, less alert and more irritable. Good luck if you decide to stick with it. No one here will tell you off if you lapse. We're all here for support xx

BitTiredNow · 06/11/2007 21:27

I like my drink too, but when I was pg with dc3, I started to drink alcohol free german beers - I live in germany where beer is practically a religion, so they have got the alcohol free stuff right and love the [pils versions - just the right taste to go with my other favourite, curry. They also do some nice alcohol free wine too

ladylush · 06/11/2007 21:36

Marke Clausthaler - german alcohol free beer. Tasty. Has less than 0.5% alcohol.

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 06/11/2007 21:40

This isn't a total abstinence thread, though? It's just a "not every night, get a grip" thread?

Will do my Day 1 tomorrow. Am babysitting for a friend so it won't be difficult!

DettaJnr · 06/11/2007 21:44

Don't worry. It's not a total abstinence thread - otherwise I'm on the wrong one...

Good luck everyone this week.

ladylush · 06/11/2007 21:47

Hell no! Sorry if it wasn't clear. It is a lets try to only drink at the weekend thread, or generally less in the week.

WaynettaSlob · 06/11/2007 21:48

I have been v.v.v. bad .
Need to sort myself out again...

Well done to the regulars, and welcome to the newcomers....

And when we hit 1000 posts, can our new title be "Not an abstinence thread, just not every night, get a grip" (thanks Coco!!)

ladylush · 06/11/2007 21:50

Agree

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 06/11/2007 21:50

Great! Will report back Thursday morning then.

Am a stone heavier than pre-DD2, so hoping cutting back might shed some pork.

Has anyone lost weight without dieting since starting on this thread?

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 06/11/2007 21:52

And

DettaJnr · 07/11/2007 17:00

Somehow, I have gained weight!!! However, I did give up breast feeding in September. Coupled with no walk to the school during the summer hols (9 weeks here in Dublin) and giving up feeding I have gained half a stone and it's all around my midriff. (can't call it a waist as it doesn't resemble one...)

I know you must be thinking - drinking too much and breast feeding but she was only having a bedtime feed and morning feed. Breast feeding and pregnancy were great ways to keep me on the straight and narrow but since giving up feeding and definitely not having another one, the world is my oyster and I am afraid I have been like a kid in the sweetshop.

How's everyone doing this week? I haven't had one (a drink that is!) since the end of last week. Gloat, gloat.

ladylush · 07/11/2007 17:15

Where abouts in Dublin are you Detta? My dad lives in Dublin and most of my extended family. By the way, didn't think anything of the alcohol/breast feeding. I used to drink sometimes even though I was feeding - used to time it wisely of course. Like you, I over indulged once I'd stopped Well done on abstaining this week. I've had nothing since Sunday.

ladylush · 07/11/2007 17:16

No weight loss here. Middle aged spread methinks

DettaJnr · 07/11/2007 17:33

Ladylush, I live in Drumcondra/Marino, north side of the city. Where are you family?

ladylush · 07/11/2007 22:31

Freaky - my dad lives in Drumcondra. His local is Fagan's (where Bertie drinks )The rest are in Dunlaoirghe plus have an uncle in Wicklow just outside Dublin.

ladylush · 08/11/2007 09:58

My aunt lives by the docks

ladylush · 08/11/2007 14:04

My dad is visiting me today. Does that warrant a lapse? Have a nice bottle of Sauvignon in the fridge

DettaJnr · 08/11/2007 19:17

How about that!!! Bertie also drinks in our local, The Goose Tavern. What a small world.

Yes, I'm sure you can have a swift libation if your dad's visiting. I used to live across the pond (for 13 years) and it was wonderful when ANYONE came to visit, great excuse to open the wine.

ladylush · 09/11/2007 09:08

Well, I was good. Only had a small glass of cuvee. The Bertie thing is funny cos he stands by the bar with his bodyguard and gets heckled by the hurling supporters. My dad has strong political views and doesn't think much of him, yet seems a bit star-struck about the PM drinking in his local

ladylush · 09/11/2007 09:11

Think I will have the sauvignon tonight - yum

DettaJnr · 09/11/2007 10:15

Strangely, Bertie generally gets left alone. Has a huge entourage. They are usually the best dressed in there, so stick out like a sore thumb!

Enjoy your wine. I finish antibiotics today. Husband's uncle died yesterday. Church tomorrow evening and then funeral on Monday. I'm going to find it hard not to have one or two even though I'm trying to stay off it for November.

ladylush · 09/11/2007 15:55

Maybe it was just cos the hurling was on when we were there. Sorry to hear about your dh's uncle Is there going to be a wake? I had 2 glasses at my granny's funeral. Was one of the coffin bearers and needed it after that Why are you trying to stay off alcohol throughout November?

LoveAngelGabriel · 09/11/2007 16:00

I'm with you, kid! I have been limiting my wine recently...or thought I had been. I just realised I have had 11 units this week. Not bad, but that was me really, really trying not to drink too much and feeling very virtuous! If I could I would drink 3 glasses of wine 5 or 6 nights a week - but you're right, it's not good for your health, mental health or life in general. Can't cope with G&T (bleurgh!), so resigned to limiting myself to 5 wine-free nights a week, and a couple of glasses a couple of nights a week.

ladylush · 09/11/2007 16:04

Do you feel better for it?
