For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Just looked at the page with 3 of your photos on Z - they are lovely. I imagined you more frumpy - NOT because of how you come across, but because of how you describe yourself, so I think you must be one of life's talker-downers

Hello everyone.

Can you please help me solve a fruit and veg related riddle?

A boy in DS's class brought in a fruit to show and tell.

DS (5) claims it was called a Wang Blue Tang . It is red and hairy (not furry) and white on the inside. You can peel it down one side but can't eat the skin.

Any suggestions?

(You're welcome, Franny).

3ANM how did they go back by themselves? Surely they must have had some encouragement, verbal or otherwise?

zippit · 01/08/2007 16:55

a lychee?

I once asked father christmas for these in my stocking....I was very disappointed they came in a tin and tasted horrid

lionheart · 01/08/2007 17:03

I don't think so (my fault), I forgot to add that it is slightly smaller than an apple.

lionheart · 01/08/2007 17:03

It's an unusual gift request, though.

Boco · 01/08/2007 17:10

Hello, i'm sneaking a few minutes on the internet at inlaws - i'm stranded, please send help!

Came to Bristol for a wedding, which was fab and had a really good time - caught up with friends for a couple of days aferwards, all great - then dp hit by terrible man flu and is unable to get up, and definitely not drive the 5 hours home. He's been in bed for 2 days, aching, shivering, sick.

i'm so bored, dds are playing with his old lego he had when he was small. i've built several lego houses and divided dozens of lego people into appropriate family groups. There's not even anything to read! I'm pacing. We were supposed to spend a day in Bath yesterday, and then home by today. Am in Portishead.

BBB still hoping to camp next week, but now dp thinks he can't get the days off as he's off sick rest of the week, so will be last minute at best, but will let you know.

lionheart · 01/08/2007 17:15

Boco, man flu will only respond to threats or bribery. Do what you have to do.

FrannyandZooey · 01/08/2007 17:18

I think it's a rambutan

do I get a prize?

OP posts:
Boco · 01/08/2007 17:21

I daren't. It took 8 hours to get here due to dd1 vomiting on the A14, then heavy traffic. He's lying quivering and sweating and the thought of him puking while trying to drive on the motorway is too much.

Suppose it must be a bit more than manflu

FrannyandZooey · 01/08/2007 17:21

Oh Boco am so sorry

It is not funny but am LOL because when I read your post "Am in Portishead" I always forget that Portishead is a real place and thought you were referring to the popular beat combo of the same name. Being "in Portishead" was a brilliant description for having to make endless Lego houses while stuck at your inlaws, with an ill dp

OP posts:
Boco · 01/08/2007 17:28

Maybe that song that goes 'i'm sho tard, of playing, playing with these lego pieces...'

Actually, they're named after this place, and dp used to do breakdancing with one of them...which i always find hilarious, as dp is very very tall and not really very graceful, and the only time he tried to show me his breakdancing - at college - he cracked a rib.

Anyway, i'm rambling. tell 100x to come and get me.

FrannyandZooey · 01/08/2007 17:33

LOL at breakdancing

My friend's husband used to be in a breakdancing boy band when he was growing up in the Phillipines. This was some time ago, and I knew nothing about it, until he came to one of my groups and at the end, when I was packing up and everyone was going home, I walked into a side room and found him breakdancing (extremely well) with a crowd of awestruck children standing around. It was one of the more surreal moments of my life.

We've had a reasonable day but I am bloody knackered, this being home with two kids on my own thing really sucks.

Food, hmm, I had some oranges. I am having some ratatouille for tea. I have been having sugar binges to keep me going, which is working ok, but is rubbish really.

Gazpatcho is just a blender soup. I make it with:

  • loads of tomatoes
  • some celery
  • some cucumber
  • as much red pepper as I can find (not as much as the tomatoes, though)
  • a tiny bit of garlic - it's raw, so a clove is loads really, even for a garlic monster like me.
  • a bit of hot sauce
  • a bit of red wine vinegar
  • a bit of olive oil

It is meant to have white bread in it, but I can't face that. I make a big batch and keep it in the fridge in a special container I bought for it.

NotQuiteCockney · 01/08/2007 18:21

(I don't peel or deseed anything. Oh, and I add a tiny bit of water.)

The play day today was good, to be fair, but completely bloody busy, so much so that I didn't feel comfortable writing my phone number on DS1's stomach and letting him be a free range child, so I had to follow him about. They made an army base out of cardboard, and DS1 played with his good friend, and went on a pirate ship, and watched a bike demo, and played with some random people's dads, who both DSes really took to.

Tatties · 01/08/2007 19:00

Gosh, so much to catch up on!

FMV - it was really lovely to meet you too, I'm so glad I went. Your warm welcome certainly took the edge off my nerves We will have to meet up again soon.

Lionheart and Avi - thank you for the patterns! I have just finished my first attempt here (using a different pattern though)

I went to the gym yesterday evening, only there half an hour max, but I feel so much better for it. I don't particularly enjoy going on the machines, for me it's the whole experience of getting some time to myself while exercising, to listen to music, daydream or whatever, having a swim, having a reviving hot shower ALONE, and then coming home feeling refreshed and with more energy. I am amazed that the results are instant. I think it's helped with my PMT too. However hormones dictated that I do some chocolate baking this afternoon

lionheart · 01/08/2007 19:27

Hot damn, you are right, Franny. DS says the prize will be the healthy eating chart he is making so that you can eat healthily.

That is sweet, Tatties. Quick too.

NotQuiteCockney · 01/08/2007 19:42

I must make gazpatcho. Only I am too busy packing and, um, posting on MN.

lionheart · 01/08/2007 19:46

Are you moving, NQC, or holidaying?

NotQuiteCockney · 01/08/2007 19:50

Holidaying, three weeks, Canada.

Tricky bit is, DH is working a lot this week, and I am home with the kids. We leave Sunday, but we're off to see Prince on Saturday night, so the usual night-before-sort-it-out method is just not going to work.

My to-do list is pretty short, now, thought, to be honest. I've cancelled things, I'm sorting a bit of cat-sitting, I need to write out my list of reservation numbers, addresses, phone numbers, and so on (I've written out what I need, just not the actual details, iyswim).

I would like to sort out the plumber coming while we're away, get a handyman sorted, and get some big rubbish taken away, but realistically, probably none of this will happen before we go.

I'm also in panic mode because we are doing Xmas while there, and I'm not sure the gift thing looks balanced really.

lionheart · 01/08/2007 20:15

That's a bit more than the usual holiday panic, isn't it?

NotQuiteCockney · 01/08/2007 20:20

Well, I think it's the normal holiday panic, for me. There's always something. Well, the Xmas thing is new, as is the fact the house has fallen apart recently (have big plumbing, electrical + roofing issues + water damage from the roof problem).

Oh yes, and volunteer job is causing trouble.

FrannyandZooey · 01/08/2007 20:52

Lionheart, I have posted a picture of ds's drawing of a penguin, that he made after we worked together with the book you sent (Lionheart sent ds a fab books about "how to draw sea animals. It goes through each animal step by step showing you how to build up the picture - very cool).

It's here and in case it needs any explanation, it is a penguin, looking to the left, so you have the beak on the left and the one eye from the side on the right. I know it isn't G+T but it is so far in advance of what he would have been able to manage before working through the book, that I am really impressed. I have been thinking for ages that I should make an effort to do more drawing with ds, and help him out a bit with suggestions, but I lack inspiration. This will really help

NQC can I post some pictures of the boys that I took yesterday? I can just email them to you if you would prefer to keep them private.

Have had cabbage, home made pizza with lots of veggies on and a really good tomato sauce, and been to the gym. While I was there I managed to delete all the music on my mp3 player. Well that's what I thought until 3 mins after I left the gym anyway . It wasn't the greatest workout known to man. I was mostly thinking "ah SHIT what will dp say?" (he is responsible for putting all the music I ask for ON there as I have no fricking clue how to do it ) and also sulking as I was really looking forward to listening to stuff there. It is ruddy boring without music. Anyway I did 13 mins cardio but not bad on the weights. I even did my ball squats which I don't like, but should do, since my calves and shoulders are puny and sad.

Lionheart I knew I was right I am looking forward to my healthy eating chart. When I gave up smoking, one of the girls I nannied for made me a HUGE star chart and gave me a prize at the end of it when I had ticked off every day
