For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

I had another tricolore salad (tomato, avocado). Will make roasted mushrooms for DH's tea - because he is home! And it's not even 8pm!

But apparently tomorrow will be busy.

DollyPopsOut · 02/08/2007 19:58

I am actually OK at knitting - what exactly do you need Franny ?

Been dreadful here today - DD has a urine infection and so have spent the aftenoon trying to get a sample. Not easy when she can't use a potty. It will be sent off to the lab and GP said we may have to go to horrible old Kings to see a paed urologist. This seems to me a little like a sledgehammer to crack a nut as this is the first urine infection she's had but still.....

F and V - does the lemon in lemon drizzle cake count (made last night for the hoardes who were coming for kids' tea but did not in the end )? Am going out for dinner with an old uni friend though so will try to get some in now.

Hope yhou are all well.

filthymindedvixen · 02/08/2007 20:02

DPO - to get a urine sample, sit her on some cotton wool. Then, you, er, wring it out into sample jar.
Poor lass.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/08/2007 20:11

I think you can put the cotton wool in the nappy, iyswim.

filthymindedvixen · 02/08/2007 20:25

ah yes, that would be easier and more logical. See, that was just my first idea on reading the problem. that'll teach me to think I have good problem solving powers

I have had some giant mushrooms.

I think I have had 10 today?

  • muesli - 1
  • gazpatcho - 3.5
  • cheese and tomato sarnie - 1.5 (5 small plum tomatoes)
  • tricolore salad - 3
  • 3 plums - 1
  • 2 giant mushrooms - 2

Right, I've got to sleep.

Boco · 02/08/2007 21:54

Hello, we made it home at last - hooray! Dp was very brave and drove despite his terrible illness.

Came home via hitchin to meet my cousins new baby - 2 week old Maximus, who was very sweet. I could appreciate how lovely he was, but was very pleased that I didn't want one at all.

Glad to be home.

3andnomore · 03/08/2007 00:05

Hi All,
f&v wise 6 or 7 portionms I would think!
Haven't really had much time to follow this thread...due to my friend visiting, etc...well, can't and wouldn't want to spend my time on the Internet all teh tiem, now, lol..
Anywya...Lionheart, you asked me if they went away all bythemselfs or if they had some encouragement verbal or otherwise.,..and I really can't work out right now, what that is about, lol....sorry...I know I am thick, lol!
Aww Boco but glad you got finally home...and Hitchin is where my dh is from and grew up
NQC, the gazpatcho sounds good...I assume it's basically a veggie smoothie thing,. lol...i.e. not cooked...or is it cooked but served cool? Sorry if this a stupid question!
OH and Holiday in canada...never been myself, but dh has been (not holiday, on exercise wiht army) and he things it's great out tehre and he could even imagine moving out there one day...I mean, I have all these romantic notions about canada, and possibly would love it, but got to say, I would have to go there first to make the decision to move or not to move, lol.,..one day!
Lullaby...you poor thing...however, go see gp or anyone asap emergency wise ....anything going black means loss of circulation and is bad news, and it needs to be sorted asap, before permanent damage comes into it....sorry to sound worried, tis because I am....
Franny and NQC...lovely pcs of the Kids there!
lol Pink...that's my girl
Wombling...oh yes, 2 or more is definately even more of a handful, but well, once 2 or more are older things do get easier...but a little Baby is always a challenge, ime And Potty training...well, ys is now 3 and we gave it a good go for the past 1 1/2 weeks and got pretty much nowhere, so, I stopped, because it started stressing me out and therefore him and well ,it was spoiling our holidays as we couldn't go anywhere...sigh!
(((Dolly)))
Zombie...fihgt agaisnt steroid weight gain ust be very frustrating, as you fihgt against 2 issues really, a the appetite for more food and then the change in metabolism.....
Filchy...oh champagen eh....

NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2007 08:12

Gazpatcho is basically a veggie smoothie. It's all the veg you feel like, blended up, with a bit of olive oil, a bit of red wine vinegar, and some hot stuff (chilli sauce etc).

NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2007 08:13

I think we're all hoping lullabye is in hospital, actually getting help. Things going black is indeed a v bad sign.

FrannyandZooey · 03/08/2007 08:16

Dolly sorry to hear about dd's illness I hope they can clear it up quickly. Collecting a sample does sound rather tricky.

Re: knitting, I don't want anyone to go to loads of trouble, but I run classes for babies where they explore with all sorts of objects (treasure baskets) and I am always looking for different materials and textures for them to investigate (ie, suck ). NQC sent me some little knitted bits and bobs where she was just practising something new, and anything like that would be useful -just knitted squares or bobbles or whatever. As long as they are large enough that they can't be choked on. If anyone makes beautiful unusual things like MrsC's woollen ball then I would be interested to talk about buying some from you.

NQC - excellent that dh came home!

Boco welcome back! - Maximus, eh? [conflicted]

3andnomore, hope you are enjoying your friend's visit.

Lullaby, thinking of you

Have eaten an underripe mango, pear, kiwis, raisins, plums.

(Frances wants natural materials, where possible, so not synthetics. By the way.)

He did come home. He got up at 5am this morning, though, to go back in.

I am convinced he will spend the weekend lying still, very ill.

FrannyandZooey · 03/08/2007 08:22

Oh yes thank you I do

wool or similar rather than man made stuff

if possible

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 03/08/2007 08:23

NQC when do you leave?

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2007 08:24

We leave Sunday.

But Saturday night we are going to Prince.

He often works really really hard and then is ill on the weekend. Although, to be fair, since he's made changes to his diet/exercise habits, this has improved. I'm hassling him to go for a long bike ride on his way home tonight, as that's meant to help.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2007 08:24

It's quite late on Sunday, too. 3:15 I think.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2007 08:26

Oh, but my 'shift children later' plan is working, they got up at 8:30 yesterday (still not up today), and I'll put them to bed even later tonight.

Well, except that DS1's heavy feet woke DS2 yesterday and the day before, so DS2 had a total meltdown last night and fell asleep a bit early, on the boob.

FrannyandZooey · 03/08/2007 08:26

Oh yes I forgot Prince! 8.30 am, woohoo. Hope it all works out.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2007 08:29

Oh, DS1 has managed sneaking, this morning.

lionheart · 03/08/2007 09:00

3ANM you were talking about your post-preganancy stomach muscles. A while back.

Boco hello, glad you all survived the man flu.

NQC I found some gazpatcho in a little bag (like an IV bag actually) in Waitrose. Don't suppose it's the same as making your own, but still.
And Prince will be amazing, I'm sure.

Lullaby must be, hopefully, getting sorted out.

Off to the New Forest today, Franny (comeptitive guilt emoticon).

FrannyandZooey · 03/08/2007 09:11

Lionheart Have fun

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2007 09:14

Gazpatcho really is risibly easy to make. I am not at all precise about the ratio of tomato/cucumber/celery/red peppers I use, and have left out celery or red peppers with no bad effect. The amount of tomato is big, that's the only rule I have. I used to make it without hot sauce, olive oil or red vinegar, it was still nice. I have a cylindrical container I use to make and store it, and it happily keeps in the fridge for a week, I think. (I have normally eaten it all by then)

zippit · 03/08/2007 09:19

fingers going black that sounds awful..makes me think of dioabetes and gangrene...hope it gets sorted quickly

raspberries and banana and oats for breakfast

I am not getting much past 5 at the moment

have missed the gym this week but still walking 6 miles a day so not too bad

told a (very very)young bloke online about my dull daily walking routine and he has suggested he could find me a more interesting way of getting fit..he is a climber/skier/rugby player...I am hoping to book a climbing lesson

filthymindedvixen · 03/08/2007 10:00

oh F&Z, I nearly came a cropper at our mums group this week - despite checking no-one had any known allergies, a toddler proved to be allergic to feathers . The mother just looked blank and said ''oh yeah she's really allergic to feathers. So am I''.
I felt awful watching this excema-like rash steal over the poor thing. But I did ask!

Off for an adventure walk to day (4 miles through a wooded river valley with trolls etc hiding behind every corner and Orcs which need defeating etc. it's the only way I can persaude themto keep walking ) Apart from chcocolate of course
