Just find it really hard to stop! I have if im honest with myself a problem i drink wine every night of the week which i know its bad for me but find it so hard not to! i made a point of stopping so many times i wouldnt mind if i actually enjoyed it anymore as i dont think i do i think its a habit i have got into and just cant get out of everytime i hear some statistics about alcohol abuse on news i cringe and blush and think god thats me> Last week i didnt buy any and got to wednesday and was okay monday and tuesday was like a bear with a sore head sop grumpy bad headaches etc! so then thursday my dp brought home 6 bottles of wine and i was so pissed off with myself as he said do you want some or are we waiting till the weekend? i was doin fine then he did that and i quite clearly have no willpower as we had a bottle with tea and together polished the rest off over the weekend !! so vowed not to drink the following week but just had a bad day with children and off i went to the shop!! im so mad at myself i just wondered if anyone else has as little willpower as me!!

oh yes am constantly battling to keep alcohol consumption down to a reasonable level

We try and have 3 nights off a week but often fail

Try and only have a bottle of wine between us but often fail.

We do manage to have say one V&t while cooking then a bottle between us. Still way too much IMO for regular drinking

ladylush · 26/07/2007 15:18

But so enjoyable eh

frascati · 26/07/2007 15:18

I don't like it either. Prefer sauvignon or chablis. Mind you, had a lovely glass of prosecco the other day. Have a bottle downstairs....yum. Is it only 15:20 - at least 4 hours to wait

bosslady · 26/07/2007 15:21

only a true wino (me) would spot that 1 i dont drink that i used to before i found nicer ones!!

I always fancy a glas or two of red wine in the evening and whether I have the willopwer to resist depends on what kind of day/week I'm having. I kind of see it as a 'treat' that I deserve and its a very quick way of relaxing. I sometimes find it difficult to stop (particularly on a weekend) and end up polishing off a bottle. I regret it every time as I then don't sleep well and spend the next day tired and sometimes hungover.

The funny thing is I don't feel the same about any other alcohol. If I don't have any red wine in the house and can't go and get some I don't tend to hit DH's beer or the spirits in the rinks cabinet. Does this mean I am a Redwineaddict rather than a burgeoning alcoholic?

I also stopped when i was pregnant without too much trouble. Maybe I should ge pregnant again. Seems like an extreme way to cut soen on drinking...

Desiderata · 26/07/2007 15:22

I drink way too much red wine every night. The problem is that my dh works for a wine distribution company, and gets top notch stuff for a couple of quid a bottle.

I need to do something about it, that's for sure ...

bosslady · 26/07/2007 15:22

I could ditto your OP exactly bosslady
I was pregnant until 18 wks ago and that obv made me stop and I vowed I would not slip back into the same habits again
Even though I'm breasfeeding I still drink altough 3 beers is top limit for me.
I find it easier to go without altogether than stop at 1.
Everyday full of resolve to not drink today and at 6pm I'm asking dp to get some drink in.

I at least do have 2 free days a week now, I wish dp would have more resolve too, I cannot stop him from drinking, but if he is - then I cannot not have one IYKWIM

It bothers me all the time.
I also see it as a habit not an addiction but not so sure now

HairyToe · 26/07/2007 15:23

cut down on drinking I mean

MadEyemarthamooDy · 26/07/2007 15:23

We used to. We'd share a bottle of wine most nights - maybe have 1 or 2 nights a week 'off'. Then dh was diagnosed with Graves' Disease (overactive thyroid) and, while that wasn't anything do do with his alcohol consumption, the barrage of blood tests he had showed his liver enzymes (I think that's the right thing) were very high. It frightened him and we have both cut right down - we have a bottle of wine, maybe once a week now. We've also switched from the very strong reds we were drinking to white or rose. Have to say - I feel much better for it too.

quiveutmabonnebaguette · 26/07/2007 15:24

Is Pimms as bad as wine ? I have a glass of Pimms every 2 days

CountessDracula · 26/07/2007 15:24

no
pimms is lightweight

aloha · 26/07/2007 15:24

I'm like CD and lots of others - I struggle to keep it down, though I know it keeps my weight up. I think parenthood doesn't help. You are sort of housebound a lot of the time, and it feels instantly relaxing and grown up. I haven't had anything to drink this week (and won't) because I drank so much on holiday (ie glass or two at lunchtime, g&t by the pool at 4pm, at least 1/2bottle over dinner.) My poor liver
On holiday, ds gave me a cuddle and said 'Oh mummy, you do like your wine! When I am grown up I will have some wine with you and we will watch a dvd together'
Mind you, I thought, 'ooh, that sounds nice!'

ladylush · 26/07/2007 15:24

fio - waitrose do a very nice low alcohol beer which imo is much better than becks. I have some in my fridge so will go and look. It's a german beer I think.

CountessDracula · 26/07/2007 15:25

Have taken to drinking Moscato D'Asti which is only 5% abv and totally delicious

Piffle · 26/07/2007 15:25

what I propose to do is drink white wine and soda as I can only drink it really really weak and only like to have one and it lasts for ages.

So even though I'll be drinking, the alc limits will be way under control..

Desiderata · 26/07/2007 15:25

I'm the same, HairyToe. Red wine is the only drink I like, and I wouldn't use a substitute. I've never touched spirits, and I don't like white or rose.

Funny old world, ain't it?

aloha · 26/07/2007 15:26

I also don't sleep well when I drink more than a couple of glasses. I always regret it at 3am.

HairyToe · 26/07/2007 15:26

"it feels instantly relaxing and grown up"

aloha - Thats exactly how I feel - like switching off 'Mummy' and switching back into me again. Almost!

bosslady · 26/07/2007 15:26

i cant drink red wine much gies me a upset tummy! i have got allsorts of drinks vodka scnapps spirits in the cupboard and dont touch them and wont even if i want a drink so that makes me think habit rather than addicted as if i was addicted would i not just drink anything if it was alcohol i wanted??

Desiderata · 26/07/2007 15:27

I sleep like a log on red wine.

I wake up in the fireplace!
