For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

www.bbc.co.uk/food/tv_and_radio/indianfood_episodes.shtml

is that from the programme, the recipes sound delicious...can't say I noticed the recipe for the bread..but then only looked at that page and no further yet.

My Grandfather jokes about it too! He has a sort of Parkinson- type disease and his brain won't tell his legs to go any faster unless he concentrates hard. As for the violin- ds won't get his hands on it for a year or so. He needs to grow a bit more first, but he's well chuffed and certainly realises the enormity of the gift.

Lullabyloo · 11/07/2007 14:52

oooooooooooooooooh....well done 3 ...thankyou..it's called semolina cake with peas, carrots, beans, onion, ginger & loads of spices
might have to make it this weekend

3andnomore · 11/07/2007 15:01

u are welcome Lullaby

Sauerkraut, aww....not easy for him then...I remember one of the patients I looked after when I did my Nursing training and had a stint in Geriatric Psychatric ward how he told me how awful the feeling was for him when he was caught up in his body without being able to move....he had been on a medication that gave him the same symptoms as Parkinson would give you in the very bad stage...i.e. standing in a certian position unable to move at all...sadly this often seems to happen in really awkward positions....! I am glad that your Grandad still is able to see things with humour...I think a good sense of humour is a blessing in your old age (well, I suppose it really is always a blessing), but you know what I mean.

Lullabyloo · 11/07/2007 15:07

my grandmother is 92 & my very closest friend....i adore her
i try not to think of her not being here...it doesn't bear thinking about
she is fortunate though to be in remarkable health apart from having both her hips replaced in the last few years she is one amazing lady

3andnomore · 11/07/2007 15:24

aww lullaby....I lost my nan 2 years ago, and we had a very special bond...I was very lucky to be able to say good bye to her....I knew her health was deteriorating, and as she hadn't seen my youngest son at that time I had to go to Germany to visit her and show her our youngest son...that day she was clearer then she had been in a long time and she recognised me and was very pleased to see her youngest Grandchild ...a few days later she had died in her own bed. For her that was a blessing, through Diabetis she had lost both legs by then and she also had Dementia...so, really there wasn't a life Quality.
Sorry, this thread is getting a bit heavy now...

FrannyandZooey · 11/07/2007 17:49

Blimey, this thread is so busy, it's great

I have not done amazingly well today on the f+V front today, and not terribly well on the exercise front all week really. Bit busy and tired, but it is all working out ok. Today had large portion raspberries and blueberries, a hard nectarine and some raisins for breakfast, roasted vegetables and hummus sandwich for lunch, and some red cabbage coleslaw for dinner. Not too bad, added up.

Will try to catch up with all posts shortly. Lullaby, I posted your book just now (second class). Hope it doesn't take ages to get to you.

aww franny...we all have those times, eh.
Just had Pasta Bolognese...(homemade bolognese, with Peppers, loads of mushrooms, onion, lots of garlic, punnet of fresh cherry tomoatoes as well as a carton of Passata and fresh Basil....hmmmm)....

ahundredtimes · 11/07/2007 18:04

Hello. BB yes, what exciting news! How did you know? DH very sceptical, he thinks they're going to try and sell us timeshares in a roller coaster or something, but NO I told him, this is Mumsnet. lol.

Thank you for all your sympathies. I don't know - I just got all upset and laid low last night. Then lots of people arrived and said they thought in the long run it was okay to not totally fit in, and am much more chipper now.

And Sauer, if you're interested in the book aloha recommended, I have ordered and will send on if you like??

Today I have eaten a pizza and a bar of Green & Blacks. Perhaps this is why I'm suddenly more cheerful?

Am off now to cook next recipe for grading. . . .

FrannyandZooey · 11/07/2007 18:07

Yay, oh congrats you two

only just seen it myself

BocoBeak · 11/07/2007 18:18

What's the congrats for? What's the good news?

I'm very excited - just got tickets to go to the Latitude this weekend. Dp going away for a stag weekend and i'm taking dds. Little bit nervous as to how we'll cope with the camping and all that without dp, but lots of friends coming from london and manchester so sure we'll be fine. Was very impulsive decision. Waaah.

Going to have to ask scary head if i can take dd out of school too.

FirenzeandZooey · 11/07/2007 18:24

BB and 100x have announced the birth of their love child

the christening is being held here

BocoBeak · 11/07/2007 18:25

Wow - fantastic! Congratulations.

ahundredtimes · 11/07/2007 18:36

I know. I NEVER win things. Is all sooo exciting. My dcs are looking at me in quite a new way. Ds2 keeps saying 'but what did you DO to win the competition' and I rather lamely explained that I added some things to do in Bath. 'What did you put?' he demanded, 'erm, the local park?' I said. He rolled his eyes, but secretly they all think I'm a superwoman now.

3andnomore · 11/07/2007 18:40

how cool 100x....and lol at your ds's eye rolling...

BocoBeak · 11/07/2007 18:58

Ok - now me, someone be excited for me going to Latitude Festival and seeing Bill Bailey and Arcade Fire and the Magic Numbers and Clap your hands say yeah, and doing fairy workshops in the woods and going on owl trails and all that.

Filchymindedvixen · 11/07/2007 19:00

Is that the one at Leicester poly?

BocoBeak · 11/07/2007 19:04

Me? Latitude is near Southwold in Suffolk. NOt too far from where i live so i can go home if it doesn't work out. Brilliant things for children - lots of art and circus skills and pond dipping. There are literary bits and theatre bits and film and comedy and music. Exciting excitiiiing.

Filchymindedvixen · 11/07/2007 19:06

w/r Highly Sensitive Child book. I have a HSC and while I can't say the book was a great deal of practical help for me (can just imagine his teacher's face if I tried to discuss his sensitivity with her . But I did find it terribly reassuring that my child was not a freak and also in getting dh to adjust his parenting style for ds1.(he is very boomy IFKWIM)

ds2 is world's apart...he is a fully-formed drunken rugby player type who loves rough and tumble, raucousness, belly laughs, very rude songs and naked buttocks!

Filchymindedvixen · 11/07/2007 19:07

oh sorry, getting confused. We looked at Latitude last year but as we go to a Devon festy in August and usually holiday in cornwall, it was just a trip too far...It does look fantastic. Maybe next year!

NotQuiteCockney · 11/07/2007 19:08

That sounds nice, Boco.

I am going completely fucking doolally, stuck in the house all day. I might go along with DH to birthday drinks for someone from his old team, tomorrow, if I can get a neighbour to sit ...

I really hate being stuck in. DS2 continues to be totally fine. He's scratching a bit, but not much. I'll give Medised at bed time, if he needs it, but I haven't given any drugs at all so far. (Is piriton basically the same? Or just antihistamine, no paracetamol? We barely ever use medised, anyway.)

Oh, yes, 10/10 ... have had:

  • dried fruit in cereal (1)
  • big bowl of tricolore salad, maybe 3 servings (2 tomatoes and a whole avo)
  • three bowls of stirfry (courgette, onion, garlic, cabbage, red pepper, beetroot) - 4 servings? 5?

So am at 8 or 9. Will have watermelon or nectarines or both. Oh, and had quite a bit of lemon courgette loaf (yum), which might give me a serving or a half?

And I did the school run, so 40 minutes of biking.

3andnomore · 11/07/2007 19:18

Boco, that does sound cool...tbh, until you explained what you would be doing, I had actually no idea what a latitude festival is....lol!
NQC, being stuck in is a nightmare...drives me up the wall, too...! Well, Medised is obviously Paracetamol + some antihistamine whereas piriton is just antihistamin, but I imagine it's a higher dose of it because it's secially meant to help with itchy things aswell, as hayfever, etc...

does choclate count as one of your 10 f&v...I mean, afterall it is kind a derived from a bean...I know....things like Galaxy are more sugar than anything....lol...not that I care...because I will have some in a mo anywya, lol....I have the urge...really weird, as earlier I just had a real urge for some crisp, and that is an unusual urge, am not a crisp person...odd....

ahundredtimes · 11/07/2007 19:19

Hurrah enthusiastic Latitude excitement for Boco. Sounds fab, and will probably be all the better for being impulsive decision.

So sorry to hear about all these poorly dcs and the scratching.

I got rather poor grades tonight on a prawn pasta salad and dd gave a 0 for the pudding (which I thought was delicious, yoghurt, honey, raspberries.)
