For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

(3 sets of visitors isn't normal! That's excessive! It was just because we were home - one set was being sympathetic, one set had a child with CP, one set visits normally (and wanted CP), and one set just wanted CP.)

NotQuiteCockney · 12/07/2007 20:48

Oh, 10/10: cereal (1), stir fry (2), mushroom tart (2), gazpatcho (2), watermelon (2). Might have a nectarine or orange or something. Usual frenzied bike ride.

Filchymindedvixen · 12/07/2007 21:54

ok Toot, just for you...roast your butternut squash, (chopped in half and de-seeded for about 25 mins, scrape off flesh. Add to pan, with onion, a carrot, sweet potato, salt and lots of pepper and a couple of dried apricots chopped up. a kallo stock cube, about 1/2 pint water, simmer til everything soft. Whizzy whizz. Serve with dollop of cream, or in your case, a handful of chopped coriander. Also works well with roasted red pepper if you can be arsed. You can add a potato if you want or some red lentils for extra thickness...some cayenne pepper adds a nice spiceness.

I don't 'do' formal recipes very well, so all these are approximate and this is a made-up 'tm' filthymindedvixen recipe

lionheart · 12/07/2007 22:02

Toot, will investigate grinders further. Might need a whizzy whizz thing too.

Malfoynomore · 12/07/2007 22:23

Filthy, that soup sounds like something I have done, well, similar....all teh veggies were roasted with some Manuka Honey though...but, I wasn't so keen on them, but as a soup with some organic natural yoghurt it was divine, lol!
My soup had Honey roasted Carrots, ButternutSquash, Parsnips, Courgettes and Peppers in it....

TooTicky · 12/07/2007 22:29

Ooh, yum, thanks filth

TooTicky · 12/07/2007 22:29

I can't believe I just called you filth!

TooTicky · 12/07/2007 22:31

I am eating a sort of Indianesque thing with onion, garlic, lentils, carrots, potato, chard, tomatoes, coriander from the garden and a hotchpotch of spices.

Dd1 is still away - I still feel odd. She will be back tomorrow

Filchymindedvixen · 12/07/2007 22:32

Yes, perhaps you could all call me FMV...?

TranquilaManana · 12/07/2007 22:34
TooTicky · 12/07/2007 22:38

Sorry

TooTicky · 12/07/2007 22:41

I just want to EAT dammit, but I've probably eaten enough [disgruntled]

Malfoynomore · 12/07/2007 22:42

lol FMV...couldn't remember the initials by the time I scrolled down and posted, so, took the easy option and the bit I did remember, lol....

NotQuiteCockney · 13/07/2007 07:09

Things are not improving.

DH went out to drinks last night and got back very late (partly down to bus failures, to be fair). By which point I was not in a good way, for a long list of reasons.

DS2, again, didn't really sleep. He was up for quite a while in the middle of the night.

And now DS1 is ill. In some ways, that's ok, as school today is a two-hour thing, and I don't really feel up to biking, after another extremely shitty night.

But the plans to have him go away with a friend for the afternoon are off, as well, of course.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/07/2007 07:10

Thanks for the soothing supportiveness, by the way. Things are going to have to improve sometime, I'm sure of it. DS2 did sleep a bit more last night than the night before. Maybe he'll be a bit more cheerful today. A neighbour is willing to sit with him and watch tv (now I've verified that you can't get shingles from having contact with someone who's got chicken pox).

NotQuiteCockney · 13/07/2007 07:34

And now DS1 is better. Which is good, really, but this is the second fucking time this has happened this term - he gets up, says he is ill, eats breakfast, hangs out a bit, and says he is fine. It's understandable, I guess, but I've made clear that from now on, if he says he's ill on waking up, I'm not believing him, and he's getting dressed and fed for school before we make a decision.

TheChamberofCarrots · 13/07/2007 09:50

Seems like you've had a very long run of stress and illness NQC. Perhaps you need the summer to chill out and recuperate, if it ever arrives

I've had two kiwis and a peach and some dates. I went to Wagamamas yesterday evening, at 6pm with no dc's, what a treat! I must go out then more often, returning home when they are in bed rather than being tired after going out later. I feel dandy today Lots of bean sprout and onion, coriander, asparagus and soy beans in salt. Are they bad for you, they are very green looking but I felt like I was eating eostrogen? They were tasty though.

Have fun, Boco!!

TranquilaManana · 13/07/2007 11:58

aw nqc, you sound tired and in need of a break. you have my moral support from afar instead...oh well [sympathetic, no empathetic smile]

i have left ds's, all 3 of them, at the 'holiday club', which is a nursery about a 15 min drive from here... is an outdoor nursery and its f'ing fantastic... they are happy as little pigs in poo and i am gloriously guilt free while i sit on the pc, alternately mn'ing and shopping for things for the house which is NEARLY READY and looking fkin WONDERFUL.
so despite being so tired i am worrying myself behind the wheel of the van... i am really quite deliriously happy today (in a physically shattered sort of way[wonk])

food: have had a cup of coffee. no time to eat!

FirenzeandZooey · 13/07/2007 12:42

More sympathy coming towards NQC

I have eaten some fruit, and some veg, and stuff

bit busy

Malfoynomore · 13/07/2007 12:47

NQC, aww, you must be shattered.
On the poorly before school thing and then perking up....I would say your child needs the poorly treatment...i.e. so you are poorly, that means you must be in bed and only with a book for company, no tv or Playstation (if you child has that), etc...because a poorly person needs lots and lots of rest....maybe once realising that being poorly is not all that much fun pretending to be poorly is not so appealing...!
My es had me pick him up from school at one point, because apparently he felt sicky...well, we were still on the schoolgrounds and he perked up and asked what he could have to eat, maybe chocolate or somehting...I had a good mind just returning him, but said I would not, but if he would pull that stunt again I would return him to his school asap. And despite all his asking for special treats and nice food he was treated as if he was sick for real...he never did it again
Well, as for eating I had an apple and a banana and a Tuna salad with a whole can of sweetcorn and 1 onion in it. So 3 portions so far, or 3 1/2 (1/2 for the onion???)

TooTicky · 13/07/2007 13:17

Grapefruit, raisins and seeds, leftover spicy veg from yesterday, plain soya yog with fruit puree and honey. Perfect.

Dd1 back today - yay!!! (Hope she enjoyed it!)

TooTicky · 13/07/2007 13:19

Oh, the redbush tea thing - picked it up somewhere recently, may have been MN. It is supposed to soothe the skin. I have tried it when ds2 was feeling itchy (sometimes even water makes him itch badly) and it seemed to help. He and dd2 also enjoyed the novelty of having teabags floating about in the bath.

TheChamberofCarrots · 13/07/2007 13:24

do you know about soya beans, Toot, are you not meant to eat too many of them? Not sure if I read that somewhere or if I'm imagining it. Perhaps it's just means don't eat too much. They looked like veg, tasted like veg but somethinng about them WASN'T veg, maybe it was psychological.

TooTicky · 13/07/2007 13:32

Were they edamame? Young green soya beans? I think they are quite delicious (although dcs do not agree) and they whizz nicely into soup as well.
I think there is something about over-consumption of soya, but maybe some of this is propaganda by rabid meat eaters. I've heard that it can make males less masculine and also that too many isoflavones are not a good thing, but I'm not actually sure what they are
Moderation in all things, I think

But then, this is a recent worry, isn't it? And people in other cultures have been eating soya beans for years. Perhaps GM contamination could be a factor? Dunno. Will stop rambling.

Malfoynomore · 13/07/2007 13:33

lol Soya beans are veg, lol...but yes tehre have been things in the press about oestrogen, etc....however...in asia it's a commonly eaten food, etc...and I don't think there really are the issues that are mentioned...I wonder if maybe it's a ploy from teh Dairy industry, as they try to keep people drinking milk, despite it not really being something humans, especially after the weaning age, should consume..but of course, that wouldn't be so great for them, lol...
