May I?

popsycal · 14/07/2007 07:02

Right - my leg thing actually feels muscular rather than the bone which I thought it was. Calf muscle feels really tight. It gets better if I move around but is there anything particular I can do? I am not running today and am not going to do much dancing at all...

glitterfairy · 14/07/2007 15:00

Popsycal huge good luck wave from me for tomorrow. Let us know how you get on.

I went to the gym this morning with my trainer and really worked hard which si good as I have been a very lazy this week but am moving and starting a new job next week so I do have an excuse. Dashing about carrying boxes now so must be good for me.

mamamoo · 14/07/2007 16:43

Goodluck from me too.

In awe of a sub 5min 5k
I couldnt do that pre childbirth!!

Sure calfs will be fine...perhaps ice tonight if still sore and do a few stretches with your foot balanced at the edge of the stair treads

Just did 27'50 at a very hilly RFL last Sun...have another 5k in a few weeks and its flat so hoping for 27 mins then, 10k ath the start of SEpt

I'm another one who hates the rain...no good when you live in Scotland and it rains all the time. Didnt go out on FRI night due to rain and didnt go to gym either...hate the gym.

Long run of about an hour tomorrow am, meet some friends on a SUn - only guaranteed run of week!

Nice to find a running thread...........
Still havent decided on an MP3...keep sending suggestions and I'll look up reviews on them all

popsycal · 14/07/2007 17:20

just to clarigfy before i sound like wonder woman
1k time just under 5 mins is just that - 1K.....add extra time on for each extra K!

I want to aim for between 27 aand 28 mins (conditions and situation being right....) - I have done it in just over 28 mins in practice runs....

popsycal · 14/07/2007 17:28

actually i will make that between 27:30 and 28:30 lol

Veggiemummy · 14/07/2007 17:49

pops if the calf thing feels better when you move around maybe get there a little earlier and do sone light calf stretches, then either walk or slow jog around just before the race starts so your nice and warmed up. As far as calf stretches go i'm not sure how you prefer to do them, there are the standing with feet one foot in front of another about shoulder width apart then lean forward whilst bending front knee, but one i prefer looks a little like you are tying your shoelaces. Squat down literally as if you are about to tie your shoelace. One leg is folded under you (shin on the ground) the other is bent up at if in a very low squat your chest will be rested on the front of your thigh, with your foot flat on the ground lean your upper body forward onto your thigh until you feel your calf muscle being stretched. then swap over and do other leg. does that make sense maybe i should find a website that has pictures.

Lilliput · 14/07/2007 17:57

Good luck popsycal, I shall wait with baited breath for your time. I did RFL in 35 minutes, I was really slowed down at the beginning because it was a bit of a scrum (oh, and then there was the big hill that I wasn't expecting), so try not to be too stressed if you don't do it in 28 minutes. Be proud of the fact that like me you went from no running, counting the seconds as you ran 3 minutes, to enjoying a good 30 minutes running. That in itself is a good feeling I think. Good luck!

Celery · 14/07/2007 18:01

Speaking of going from no running, counting the seconds, today I went on my very first run. I ran/walked at one minute intervals for 20 minutes. It was okay, but I felt like I'd done some exercise, was hot and sweaty and tired. At the beginning of the twenty minutes I felt like I could have run for quite a bit longer than 60 seconds, but towards the end, it was much harder! Looking forward to it becoming easier.

krispie · 14/07/2007 18:14

well done celery! much better that you did it that way. if you had run for longer at the beginning you would have burnt out and not lasted 20 mins. You'll soon be running non stop if you follow that plan.
good luck for tomorrow pops. i did r4l in 33mins, found it hard to do a sub 30mins due to having to weave your way through the crowd!
am just off for a run now. its a lovely evening here so going to make the most of it before the rain returns!

popsycal · 14/07/2007 19:01

Celery - brill!!!! On 29th of Apr il this year, I ran 1 minute then walked 2 and did that 6 times. I remember running for my 1 minute stretches and looking at my watch after about 30 seconds wondering whether I would be able to do the rest of the 30 seconds!!!!! It is truely amazing how quickly you improve - it is soooo motivating

lilliput - really good point abotu 'the scrum' - forgot about that. Really, if I am properly honest, I am glad just to get round! I am doing this for my lovelyt godmother who, 2 and a half years ago, was given six months to live. She is only 45, has 5 children. Has never smoked in her life yet was diagnosed with lung cancer following a chest x ray due to a car accident. She has fought and fought. Tried new medication, chemo, changed to a macrobiotic diet. She had part of her lung removed a few months ago as it started to spread again. And now!!!! She only has a 'speck' on her spleen and is returning to work! I am in awe of her and will think of her every step of the way.

Gosh - I am filling up now.

So no - the time is really insignificant

Veggiemummy · 14/07/2007 19:10

Thats it i'm doing a R4L i did one a few years ago when i first started getting into Tri as a build up race, then i did it for my dad who died of skin cancer when i was young, now i have a friend with breast cancer it's about time i did it for her as she has been a real inspiration in her fight.

krispie · 14/07/2007 19:20

race for life was soooo emotional. i got really choked up reading everyone's messages. the atmosphere is fantastic - when the race started to "what have you done today to make you feeeeeeel proud?" i couldnt swallow for the big lump in my throat. Its a great day.

Veggiemummy · 14/07/2007 19:54

have discovered my ipod pedometer thing needs calibrating and is out by about 500meters over 10km which means i am actually going further than i thought and doing my 10km about 3mins faster than i thought yay!!!

ran 10km after a 1km swim today and feeling quite shattered now, had to carbo load this afternoon with a cream tea at our local city farm cafe, yum yum.

octo · 14/07/2007 19:55

Haven't read whole thread - but I did it - I went out last night for the first time in a whole year - ran 1.5 miles - good start I thought as completely unfit! Just need to keep doing it and build up the mileage

Veggiemummy · 14/07/2007 20:03

well done Octo, thats the beginning, keep it easy to start though have you done much running before?

octo · 14/07/2007 20:06

Before ds3 was doing 3-6 miles twice a week. I want to get back up to that and then start going further if I can. Have bought a jogger to take ds3 with me when am fit again.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/07/2007 21:19

Good luck for tomorrow popsy

I havent run since Wednesday. I've been itching to get out but have been incredibly busy taking DD to parties, going on work jollies and having playdates over for DD.

I WILL go out tomorrow morning.

saggermakersknockturnalley · 14/07/2007 21:31

Good luck for tomorrow popsy.

Enjoy it - the atmosphere is great. So many people running for such a good cause.

Glad your god mother is doing so well The son of an ex-work colleague died of cancer this week. He was 12.

popsycal · 15/07/2007 06:04

Revised plan - just making it to the run without falling asleep in the car will do me

Typially a dreadful night chez Popsy. DS1 (usually a reliable sleeper) has suddenly developed a horrible croupy cough which was making him vomit so he ended up in our bed in the evening. DS2 (dreadful sleeper), woke at 2:15 (which is quite good going for him) so I got in his toddler bed with him (seemed like a good idea at the time) and he thought it was play time. WE got up at 4:45.

ARGH!

popsycal · 15/07/2007 06:06

ALso, we have bright sunshine without rain forecast til lunch time. Not sure whether that is a positive or not....

IdrisTheDragon · 15/07/2007 07:43

I'm doing the Race for Life today as well. Sadly haven't had a training programme exactly .

popsycal · 15/07/2007 08:02

WHere are you doing yours?

IdrisTheDragon · 15/07/2007 08:14

Mine's in Stevenage. Are you in the North East (I may well have invented that fact ).

DoubleBluff · 15/07/2007 08:51

Good Luck ladies do your best!!
Let us know how it went later.

Pidge · 15/07/2007 11:17

Looking forward to hearing how the RFL went.

I dragged myself out and managed one hour twenty five minutes ... hurrah hurrah - my longest run since the marathon. My foot is a bit sore, but I'm ignoring it!!!
