OP posts:

Hello everyone - especially all the new people!!

I am getting a bit worried about my RFL on Sunday. Last night's run left me quite wobbly this morning but it soon cleared. Tommorrow is literally a 15 minute run and that is it. But I am worried about my left leg as it is feeling a bit like before I got the right type of shoes.

How long are they meant to last for? It is only the one leg...

popsycal · 12/07/2007 20:31

Not even done my first ever official run yet and already I am thinking about the next.

I have entered a 10K which is 8 weeks after RFl. I have looked at the training programmmes on Cancer Research, Bupa and Runners' World and they are all so different. What do I do? I can do 3-4 runs per week with a longer one on a weekend.

Any advice?

saggermakersknockturnalley · 12/07/2007 20:49

Popsy - My long Sunday run is 6 miles, I do a hilly 3 miles, and a flattish, faster 4 in the week. I usually do a class or another 4 miles as well it depends on the weather/work/dh's shifts. I know you like a 'plan' but if you can't find one that suits try to increase just one of your runs - don't do the distance every outing. You don't need to and with your iffy knees you could do more harm than good.

Do you have proper 'rest' days? I know you do the dancing stuff too, how much do you do and does it mean you don't have a true rest day?

popsycal · 12/07/2007 20:53

I tend to run on a Sunday then 2 other days in the week. Dancing is saturday (but wll come to an end in threee weeks) - I don;t do loads but I do get a bit of a jump about.

I do have at least 2 PROPER rest days a week - usually 3.

Hi ...do you mind me crashing...did a search on runnning to see if I could get some advice. Looking to buy a MP3 player..specifically for runnning....any recommendations DH seems against ipods....anyone used creative zen plus?

Popsycal 3-4 runs a week is fab...well enough for a 10k....dont get too hung up on schedules. Not sure re your running abilities...may be trying to teach you to suck eggs...after all have crashed this thread

Have one as long easy slow run i.e at a conversational pace. Gradually build up either distance or time. Add no more than 10 % a week. So eg build up from whatever can run easy now to your 10k distance or just less than this. Or estimate your time eg if think will take an hour build up to say just over an hour easy running.

Have one short interval session eg no more than 30 mins 10 mins warm up then play around with short fasts bursts for last 20 mins eg do 3mins fast 2 mins walking or pyramids eg 1min fast 2 min walking 2 min fast 2 min walking 3 min fast 2 min walking 2 min fast 2 min walking 1 min fast 1 min walking

have one medium run eg slow warm up and cool down and perhaps speed up a bit in middle. Again up to a max of 30 -40 mins is cool for a 10k

extra run could be a short one eg 15-20 mins

HTH

mamamoo · 12/07/2007 21:12

or the i river clix 2?????

popsycal · 12/07/2007 21:32

mamamoo - that is really helpful thank you

I feel rather scared about setting out my own plan. I am still a pretty novice runner

mamamoo · 12/07/2007 21:43

Consistency is all you need (that is my problem...trying to get out on a regular basis)

If no huge time goals etc you cant go wrong with 3 runs a week, one working up to an hour or so taking it real slow and easy, one short no more than 30 mins where you get a little out of breath....either as a continuous burst or several short bursts with walking bits imbetween to recover (can ecen do between lampposts etc), the other as you fancy depending on mood. Its also good every few weeks to have an easier week - helps your body to recover. This could fit in with busy weeks when life is hectic.

Celery · 13/07/2007 06:58

I recommend the Monolith mp3 player - it's indestructable.

glitterfairy · 13/07/2007 07:29

Hi everyone it is so good that this thread has taken off in this way.

db I am concentrating on moving adn starting new job at the moment but then am going to need loads of encouragement to get out there early before work during the summer holidays.

Popsy you will be absolutely fine and the high you will feel will certainly be brilliant.

DoubleBluff · 13/07/2007 12:54

Mammoo I have the Sony NW S200
I love it. It is tubular shaped and has a pedometer bulit in adn comes with an arm band.

krispie · 13/07/2007 15:45

arrrghhh due to go for a run but it's absolooootely peeing down. what do you all do when its raining? sack it off or just get out there?

Notyummy · 13/07/2007 16:31

I hate running in the rain...which is not particularly logical seeing as I get drenched in sweat and end up jumping in the showe straight away when I get back! I tend to to a circuit session at home (check out the Matt Roberts book 'Get fit for your shape' for some really challenging workouts that you can do at home with some hand weights and a gym ball....alternatively I use either Tae Bo Ultimate Boot Camp or one of Nell McAndrews exercise DVDs....these ones are most definitely not Lorraine Kelly fannying around with a few side bends....!

Veggiemummy · 13/07/2007 18:27

my goodness i go away for 2 days and look whats happened, it's exploded...fantastic. i've tried to skim over some bits as there is so much to read through and catch up on.

I had a nice few days in Derby with friends and did a great run. Its always nice to run somewhere different, did 10km and managed a pb for this year, still not as fast as prebaby but at least under 1hr now finally. only ran once over the three days so up for a big weekend training.

pops all the best for sunday enjoy yourself.

welcome to all the new people.

DoubleBluff · 13/07/2007 18:38

Am not here tomorrow so Good Luck for Sunday Pops!

popsycal · 13/07/2007 20:09

Awh thanks everone
Well - I went out for my final run tonight in the rain which I enjoyed. I felt quite strong but only did 15 minutes. I want to keep going but . RAIN! That doesn't really bother me - rather that than blazing sun. Am meeting up with 2 friends from work before hand. Both are more experienced runners than me but one is training for the GNR so is using this as just part of her training. The other has just found out thart she is pregnant and no one knows and she is shattered so will be taking it easily.

I know I ought to be pleased if Ijust get round without walking. But I know what I am like. I have a THREE targets in my head (graded as MUST, SHOULD, COULD - sorry, the teacher in me can't disappear). LOL
MUST under 40 mins
SHOULD under 30 mins
COULD under 28 mins

I ought to just run and enjoy but I can't help myself

popsycal · 13/07/2007 20:11

weird
sentecnews vanisehd there

it should have read:

Well - I went out for my final run tonight in the rain which I enjoyed. I felt quite strong but only did 15 minutes. I want to keep going but MADE MYSELF STOP. I HAVE JUST LOOKED AT THE WEATHER FORECAST FOR SUNDAY. RAIN! That doesn't really bother me - rather that than blazing sun. Am meeting up with 2 friends from work before hand

Veggiemummy · 13/07/2007 20:48

i've heard it is best to do a short run that leaves you wanting more just before a race, so looks like that is a good start towards the time you want.

Veggiemummy · 13/07/2007 20:51

ps work out how mins per km you need to be doing the race in to get the time you want and try to run each KM in that time, will break the race up into 5 targets. but if you are planning to run with your pregnant friend and getting around with her is more important then just hang back and enjoy the atmosphere.

popsycal · 13/07/2007 20:55

am not running with them, just meeting up to start with and then afterwards

I know roughly what I do a mile in but KM.....
I should know metric shouldn't I!!!

I am sooooooooo boringly predictable with my pace though, down to the second!!!!!
I will have a look on gmaps pedometer and try to work it out in 'new money'

popsycal · 13/07/2007 22:13

right
so I reckon i do 1km in just under 5 mins...so adding on tiredness factor....
what would that be?

If I am totally honest (and probably setting myself up to fail....), I would like to do it close to 27 mins
although 28 mins is more realistic - in the right conditions....

Pidge · 13/07/2007 22:19

gooooooooooooooooooood luck popsycal!

TheDuchessDeMimsyNorkington · 13/07/2007 22:28

Veg - congratulations on pb

Popsycal - Good luck - I'm out tomorrow but will check back on Sunday night. Stop stressing about your time, OK?!

My cold has gone. Throat is a bit sore but I think that's from making speech earlier today. So I will be running again from Sunday. I've really missed not running this week!

popsycal · 13/07/2007 22:33

I am calm. I will not stress abotu my time. I will not be competitive. i WILL not worry about not running all the way........

But then I am a Taurean...so no doubt i WILL do all of the above

Am really looking forward to it

Veggiemummy · 13/07/2007 23:07

Pops that feeling you've got is just pre-race nervous energy that will motivate you so go with it.

sub 5min K's is awesome you are going to do fine.

really looking forward to hearing how you go, but most of all hoping you enjoy it.
