OO - I got my Nike Air Structure Triax for £40

I think I may start to take my mp3 out with me. I think I'd find running to music a bit more 'interesting'.

Are pedometers much use? Do they give distance or just steps/strikes?

OP posts:
oliveoil · 12/07/2007 11:18

did you get measured and everyfink?

FIL is a runner and he had to take an old pair of trainers to the specialist shop so they could see his gait (whatever that may be)

oliveoil · 12/07/2007 11:19

I have a pedometer, I used it when pushing the buggy around, did about 30,000 steps a day (I think they say 10,000 min)

up hills as well!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/07/2007 11:22

Erm.....actually no....but, after looking at the running shoes website - which is fab I might add (link on last thread) and checking out my wet footprint I made a self diagnosis... Not ideal, I know....

From experience (although admittedly going back 16-17 years when I used to do athletics) Nike Air shoes were always a good (wide) fit.

I ordered them from shop.com £34.99 + 4.99 p & p

But, yes, agree a proper fitting is best.

Can't believe so many of you are running and caring for little ones. I couln't have done it when mine were babies. Mine are 4 and 7 and now sleep all night - so makes life easier.
Went out this morning and was determined to run for an hour, did 30 mins out then came back.
Turns out i ran 6.5 miles!
I flet fab too it was a lovley morning, at one point was running along the river bank listening to the Cult ' She sells Snctuary' Felt like stopping and leaping around playing a bit of air guitar - but didn't want to frightne the dog walkers!
Must be the endorphins.
Get some good runs in today girls we have all been a bit lacking this week!!

DoubleBluff · 12/07/2007 11:30

VVV my MP3 is a sony sport it has a pedomoeter built in ( not sure if exactly accurate) and an arm band.

Notyummy · 12/07/2007 11:40

Hi everyone! Good to see there are lots of other mum runners out there. My dd is 12 months old and I am trying to average around 30 km a week. I ran in pregnancy up til 6 months (did a 10k race at exactly 6 month pregnant in 1 hr 5mins, including a 2 minute pee stop in local pub )

Although I am not new to running, it was hard starting back, having had a 6 month break; i had a forceps delivery and then was taken into theatre for amnual extraction of placenta because doc snapped the cord, and haemorraged during that. I didn't feel like running for a few weeks, and when I went back to the gym when dd was 3 weeks old, I contented my self with wiggling away on the cross trainer beacuse I thought my insides were going to drop out when I jogged! It is hard to motivate yourself after a bad night. If you haven't found it already, can I urge you to log on this www.runnersworld.com/0,7118,,00.html site (crap with links...) Although it is american, is really good and has loads of ideas, plus you can find out exactly how many calories you burn when you run, and design a training programme if you want to be able to run 5/10km or half marathon etc

Cheers

Notyummy · 12/07/2007 11:41

erm...I may have meant MANUAL extraction of placenta....it is not something I plan on doing annually

krispie · 12/07/2007 11:53

notyummy - not suprised you didnt feel like running 'for a few weeks' after that birth story! i dont feel like running for a week after my period! also - im doing a 10k in a couple of weeks and dont think i'll beat your '6 months pregnant time'!

db - well done on 6.5 miles. i love it when I have a great run like that compared to other days when every step seems like a struggle!

mustrunmore · 12/07/2007 11:56

at annual extraction!
God though, thats a great 10km time for pg! You lot all really put me to shame.

Ipod; I dont have a prob hearing things with mine, as the left ear always eems to pull out a bit I always have the wire too tight, else I can see it flapping and it bugs me. I have it clipped on slightly to the right so I can change it easily if there's something on I'm not in the mood for! So, I'll hear fine if a car or attacker comes from the left!!

Notyummy · 12/07/2007 11:56

krispie...just have a stop in the pub, and whatever your time is, say...@i could've shaved 10 minutes of it if I hadn't stopped for a pint..'

Allthe old blokes in the pub though it was hilarious when I loomed into view with obvious bump, in running gear with my race number, shouting 'wheres the ladies?!'

krispie · 12/07/2007 12:49

you might be onto something there NY!

speaking of attackers though - i was out running last week with a friend late evening and we were approaching a guy from behind, as we got closer he spun round (in defense) and threw a punch!! (which missed). He had heard footsteps and actually thought we were about to mug him!!! It was a close call and he was very apologetic but we were all bit shaken up. am more wary now when running up behind someone!

Tatat · 12/07/2007 13:05

Oh...my...god...

I have just conquered 5km (first time I did this was last week of Jun ready for my Race for Life, the whole reason I have started running)
As if that isn't good enough (I know it's only 5km but for someone who's never ever run before, apart from to the chocoloate shop and back again, it's a huge achievement) I went out for a run on monday night with a friend and managed a WHOLE 10km!!!!!!!
Am so pleased with myself, finally feel like I've found a sport I can get past "beginner" at! Didn't plan to do 10k, just happened- did 5k on my own then my friend joined and thought we were going walking (she's been injured) but did another 5k! DH, seasoned runner, nearly fell over when I get home and showed him the evidence on the sat nav watch he's been insisting I wear so he can be Mr Statistics.
I feel embarrassingly pleased with myself.
Is this how people get addicted to running?

DoubleBluff · 12/07/2007 13:06

Funnily enough frightened a lady walker out of her skin as I ran past, she jumped which made me jump!
I was very apologetic.
Notymummy you are inspiring!
At 6months pg i did nothing but eat
PAying for it now though!

DoubleBluff · 12/07/2007 13:07

Tatat well done!
It is addictive. i was on a massive high this morning just wanted to run and run.

Tatat · 12/07/2007 13:09

sorry all just realised I completely interrupted the conversation.

To add to it though- I find I get a bit wary too with my ipod and want to turn it down so I can hear anyone running behind me- which sort of negates the point of having it for me. I like to get lost in music (but not caught in a trap) and being able to hear my surroundings spoils it for me. So now do no ipod and the ideas I've had when out running are some of the best I've ever had

Tatat · 12/07/2007 13:15

Also just as an aside, I have found that running is a lot like sex, the thought of having to do it is a right pain in the rear but once you're there, it's like "well this is actually really nice I must do it more often"

(note I am much better at motivating myself to go running, poor dh)

DebitheScot · 12/07/2007 13:16

I know what you mean about worrying about not hearing things with the ipod on. I worry a bit about cars coming or about being mugged so have it low enough so I'd hear (although I'm not convinced a mugger would make a lot of noise while creeping up on me ). I couldn't do it though without it on if I was running on my own. Last week I downloaded a couple of podcasts to listen to, that was quite good.

DebitheScot · 12/07/2007 13:17

lol at sex analogy. Altho not so sure about the 'pain in the rear' bit!

krispie · 12/07/2007 13:20

tatat! thats great! well done! it probably helped that you hadnt planned that 10k and i always find it loads easier when i run with a friend. congrats though! thats it - youre addicted now

krispie · 12/07/2007 13:38

lol at sex comment! my dh read out loud from bloody runners world that exercise improves sexual performance and then looked up expectantly with a big grin.... oh god, if anything is going to make me give up and become a couch potato that comment is....

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/07/2007 13:53

at pain in the rear and sex analogy (no more bum sex talk purlease ladies....)

I was getting quite 'twitchy' last night when I thought I couldnt go for my run.

And today, for our works 'fun fund' outing, we were supposed to be doing rounders and other such games in the local park. I was really looking forward to it. It's been rained off though and now its 'quiz in the pub'. Which is lovely, and dry, but still.......

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/07/2007 13:53

OP posts:
krispie · 12/07/2007 14:14

DoubleBluff · 12/07/2007 14:34
