Another beginner and thread lurker here. Well done to the racers, you are an inspiration!

I have been really struggling to get going, having had a recurring throat viral infection thingy for the past month. Everytime I think I'm over it, it comes back. I know I would have progressed much further if not for that. Currently running for 10 minutes twice with a walking break in between. If I can stay well, I know I will improve quickly now.

Hi sweetboy. You're no more of a novice than quite a few of us. I think what you are doing is about the same as a lot of people on here. I'm meant to be training for a 10k too (14th Oct) and in the last couple of weeks I've only been out twice a week. Going to aim to do 1 30-40 min run and 1 40-50 min run each week as a minimum. Hope to either run or do some other excercise once a week on top of that. For example I'm going to cycle 3 miles, play badminton, cycle 3 miles home again tongiht.

Not sure if we have to run 10k before the race. I did 5 miles last week when I'd only ever done 3 before and I reckon in a race situation I could probably do 6 without too many problems. Depends what sort of time you're going for I guess.

becks5109 · 11/09/2007 10:12

hello - been reading this thread since yesterday and you're all inspiring me! Did my first run yesterday for the first time in about a year and a half and was totally rubbish! Only managed about 10 minutes and then had to walk and today my legs are really aching despite a hot bath last night. Did do some stretching afterwards but my knees and legs were quivering like mad! My furthest ever run has only been 5k so think I need to find a race to enter to motivate myself - had 2nd baby nearly 8 months ago and not having any more so determined to get rid of my jelly belly and tone up! Are any of you London runners?

I don't go very fast either. I'm hoping to do the 10k in about an hour. No it's not in Brighton, it's in Fleet and part of me is dreading it a bit because it's 2 laps the same which could make it quite hard work

popsycal · 11/09/2007 18:56

Hello new folks.

FWIW, I am a relative novice too. I started running at the end of April - I followed the Race for Life 5K programme and in mid July, I completed the 5K RFL in somewhere between 27 and 28 mins.

I hardly ran through the summer - dodgy leg. The furthest I had ever ran was 3.9 miles and that was in early August. Once.

I had pretty much decided that I would not do the 10K at the weekend, then 5 days before, Jane TOmlinson died and I changed my mind. So I pretty much did the 10k with just 5k training under my belt. I think I had a pretty good basic fitness level before though.

I am trying to plan what to do next. I do need to consolidate on my 10k I think seeing as it was pretty much double my longest every run prior to that.

There is a tiny local 5k on Sunday. I am going to go out for an easy run tomorrow and Friday and see how I go. They are aking entries on the day so if things go ok, I may turn up.

I am tempted to follow the last few weeks of the 10k bupa plan for the rest of September. Then what? Nothing else planned until February......

Also
Glitterfairy and Pidge???

Hello???

mamamoo · 11/09/2007 20:15

pathetic attempt tonight...just under 5k butt feeling tired and lacking in motivation...ran with a friend otherwise would have packed up and gone home

DoubleBluff · 11/09/2007 20:29

It's better than nothing Mammamoo! At least you were out there doing it!
Welcome to teh new runners sounds like you are doing just fine.
Although I have been running for a year it has been pretty erratic and i am still a plodder.
I think having a race to aim for helps keeps you focussed.

Veggiemummy · 11/09/2007 21:23

Oh mammamoo better than me, those Nike challenges i signed up for at least have me coming last to make evryone else look better. DH comes back late on friday so no chance to run until weekend, but loads of packing to do before next wednesday, but then at least then i will have lots of grandparents aunts uncles and nieces to entertain DS so i can get out and run

Celery · 12/09/2007 16:18

I'm going over to spectate at the New Forest Marathon ( and half marathon ) on Sunday ( I live on the Isle of Wight ), with an ulterior motive of sussing it out. I have dreams of running it myself next year, or atleast the half marathon. Do any of you have experience, or ambitions of a Marathon?

There is an Isle of Wight Marathon too, but apparently it's in the top five toughest Marathons in the country, so I thought I'd better make my first one slightly easier! And the New Forest is so beautiful obviously. I have a romantic vision of me running along side some New Forest ponies, rofl!

Who am I kidding? I can only run a mile in one go at the moment. Still, the next one is a whole year away. Should I aim high?

BobbyGrantycal · 12/09/2007 16:56

OMG just seen an official photo of myself near the finish of the 10k on Sunday. Embarrassed .

However, my best mate's mate (you with me??) did the same run as me. She was 15 minutes slower, has been training 4 times a week since June and is doing GNR in a few weeks. I know I should not gloat but......

BobbyGrantycal · 12/09/2007 16:57

It's me - Popsy - btw

DoubleBluff · 12/09/2007 20:19

Popsy you are gloating!!
See how well you did?
Celery - aim high! I dream of doing the London MArathon but I am too chicken!!

DoubleBluff · 14/09/2007 09:23

Bump to stop it dropping off threads i'm on!
Should go run today but feel a little fragile after a3/4 bottle of Pinot Grigio last night

glitterfairy · 14/09/2007 20:17

Hello everyone I havent put anything here for so long out of shame and havent cuaght up with you all yet but hello.

Am back running three times a week and aiming for my half marathon in October! Also working hard on everything else as the new job proved too much and I put on a stone and a half and stopped exercising for a month or so!

Celery · 15/09/2007 07:01

Am going to attempt my first 20 minute run today. I did 2 x 15 runs with a 5 minute walk in between on Thursday - amazing how quickly your fitness levels can improve, isn't it?

popsycal · 15/09/2007 07:14

Welcome back glitterfairy!!! Lovely to see you again. You willl get back on track in no time!

Celery - brilliant! I found once I hit the 20 minute continuous thing I could drop out the walks.....so next it may ask you to do 20 mins continuous then 5 min walk then 10 mins run - I just dropped the walk at the advice of the ladies here and was fine.

I have not run all week - not well again - it is either a weird viral thing that I had last month that has come back or some weird hormonal thing. Had it mid cycle since July. Doctor told me to start taking evening primrose. Hoping to have a run tomorrow as gradually starting to feel a little bit better. Off to get some ibuprofen, evening primrose, cod liver oil and a cup of black coffee. I'll be rattling!

Celery · 15/09/2007 08:18

I've been taking evening primrose oil for about 4 months now and it's definately helped balance my hormones out - it does take a few weeks to kick in though.

That's what I'm planning on doing - dropping the walk bit. If I can do the 20 minutes today, then I'm just going to try to add on a minute or two onto each run after that until I can do the full 30 minutes - shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks hopefully, then I've reached my first goal

What do you all do during the winter months with colds etc? Do you just run through them? With 3 children, I do seem to have a permanent cold sometimes, and I'd hate for it to scupper my running, now that I'm finally getting into the swing of things. Or will the new healthy fit me be able to ward off all these bugs now?

popsycal · 15/09/2007 11:33

Celery - can be cheeky and ask in what way it has helped and what the proble, was in the first place?

Feel free not to answer

Celery · 15/09/2007 13:42

It's just helped to tone down the usual PMT symptoms - the aggression and depression that comes just before period. What happens mid-cycle with you, if you don't mind me asking? I always feel slightly PMT-y when I'm ovulating too, but not so bad.

Pidge · 15/09/2007 14:14

Popsy - thanks for the 'where's she gone' msg!!!

I have been utterly useless all summer - not my fault, but have had a series of illnesses - chest infection twice with asthma complications, plus tonsillitis and infected glands. So literally managed two short runs in about 2 months.

But am back on track - was out for an hour and a half this morning (it's my birthday and I even sacrificed by birthday lie in to go out!).

In theory I have a half marathon in two weeks, but have almost certainly decided to pull out. I'm still so tempted to just go along and jog round. Not a good plan I know.

Haven't had a chance to catch up on everyone's msgs, but popsy I see you cracked the 10k barrier. Hooray!

DebitheScot · 15/09/2007 14:34

Celery- I think my childminder's dh is running the New Forest half tomorrow. He's running a half marathon this wknd and its the only one I can find near here. Let me know how it looks. Maybe I should do it next year too.

DoubleBluff- if you watch this thread then it'll never vanish even if you don't post.

I've managed 2 runs plus badminton in a week this week for the first time.
Badminton (and I cycled there and back) on Tues, 3 mile run on Wed (and I taught 1 lesson of PE so was running about a bit then) and a 4.2 mile run yest (we thought we'd done 4.5 coz it took 45 mins but when I measured it it wasn't that far).
Running club starts at school this week and I'm helping run that so will get a bit of running then every week too.
And I found a cunning way to get a run in without feeling guilty about going out and leaving dh with ds after work. I have to pick dh up from work then we go and get ds from childminder. So on Wed I went to dh work, gave him the car, told him to collect ds and then I ran home. I only got in about 5 mins after them so my 30 min run only took up 5 mins of my time (if that makes sense).

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 15/09/2007 14:45

I'm doing badly. Can someone please slap me?

This weeks grand total was 2x30 min runs and a body tone class. It ain't going to get me round 10k. Dh says I have to 'visit the well' (??) I think he means I have to put a bit of effort in lol. Anyway along those lines we supposed to be doing a 16 mile cycle tomorrow. Theres' nothing worse than a runner sidelined by injury. He keeps coming up with routes and 'bright ideas'.

I think the problem is that I know I'm going to struggle to get out enough over the next few weeks. dd is due in hospital for surgery and dh is going in in the middle of October for a cartlidge op. Two of them on crutches doesn't bode well for my free time.

popsycal · 15/09/2007 15:47

Welcome back PIdge. Do you half marathon. The lovely ladies on here forced persuaded me to do my 10k and I am so glad that I did!

Celery - I have been getting really bad breast pain for 3 months in a row in the middle of my cycle that the doc thinks may be ovulation related......
